The latest bulletin of the topical “Official Audience” Master Tape excavation series has been newly discovered! Introducing a press CD that permanently preserves the original master that updates the longest and highest quality.
“Hanley performance on May 23, 1978” is engraved on this work. It is the super superb audience recording. From the beginning, it was suddenly called “hot topic” or “official Odins”, but the excavation series itself has just started. I will explain from scratch. In the first place, the ““Official Audience” Master Tape” series is a VAN HALEN master excavation project promoted by the prestigious “JEMS”. However, it is not a series that covers all careers, but a series limited to “UK tour immediately after debut”. Here, let’s look back at the outline of the activities at that time.

This is the 1978 VAN HALEN. He traveled to Europe in less than three months after the release of his debut work, but his main focus was England. As an opening act, they performed 20 performances, and left a legend that they ate the main act BLACK SABBATH. And this first UK tour was also a great harvest area for various sound boards and super-superb audiences. Of course, we have also made a number of masterpiece albums in our shop, so let’s organize the lineup here.

… and it looks like this. While the famous superb soundboards are lined up, some audience recordings are also mixed. But these audiences aren’t free either. Details are being researched in parallel with the excavation, but it seems that the band was recording a microphone. In ““Official Audience” Master Tape”, we are discovering the original cassette of the name recording, but there is the name of Pete Angelus, known as the fifth member. It seems that the management at the time had the staff record it for documentation. The other day, the first installment “DEFINITIVE NEWCASTLE 1978 (Zodiac 550)” was very well received, but this work is the latest in such a series.
And this time, the quality is shocking again. It is clear that it is the original master from the fact that it is fully recorded even after the encore wait and the end of the performance, which were cut on the conventional board, but what is more important than that is the sound itself that penetrates the whole story. This is a completely different class. Unlike the previous work “DEFINITIVE NEWCASTLE 1978”, it is not the type to be mistaken for a sound board, but the core that breaks through the atmosphere is very thick and the details are clear. As expected, the audience noise is extremely small as there is only the recording of the parties concerned, and the reality of “closeness in the eyes” is wonderful instead of “close contact feeling at zero distance”.
And most of all, the freshness and naturalness with no dubbing marks are overwhelming. Especially wonderful is the high-pitched sound. The previous edition felt like the spoiled treble details were overburdened, and the distorted cymbals popped out from the hiss. However, this work remains neatly to the subtleties of subtleties, and has plenty of density. The treble is beautiful without any processing, and the balance with the mid-bass is natural. Exactly the sound of the scene itself comes out of the speaker.
The set for this tour is familiar, so I’ll omit it, but the point is the presence or absence of “Bottoms Up!”. Fortunately, this work is “ant”, and you can fully experience the “flame fuse = 9 songs + legendary bomber = 2 songs” that exploded with stage tension on the site.
In the history of VAN HALEN, no, the 1978 UK tour was a series of bizarre high-quality recordings in rock history as a whole. Indeed, it is also convinced that it was a series of miracles if the people involved were recording. これが1978年のVAN HALEN。デビュー作のリリースから３ヶ月もしないで渡欧したわけですが、そのメインはイギリス。前座ながら20公演もの場数をこなし、メインアクトのBLACK SABBATHも食ってしまったという伝説を残しました。そして、この初英国ツアーは、各種サウンドボードや超極上オーディエンスの大豊作地帯でもありました。もちろん、当店でも数々の名作アルバムとして作品化しておりますので、ここでそのラインナップも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。名だたる極上サウンドボードがズラリと並ぶ中で、いくつかのオーディエンス録音も混在しています。しかし、これらのオーディエンスもタダモノではない。詳細は発掘と平行してリサーチが進められているのですが、どうやらバンド側がマイク録音していたらしい。「“Official Audience” Master Tape」では、名録音の大元カセットを発掘しているわけですが、そこには第５のメンバーとして知られるピート・アンジェラスの名前がある。当時のマネジメントが資料用としてスタッフに録音させたようなのです。先日は、その第一弾『DEFINITIVE NEWCASTLE 1978（Zodiac 550）』が大好評を博しましたが、本作はそんなシリーズの最新弾なのです。
そして、今回もまた衝撃的なクオリティ。従来盤ではカットされていたアンコール待ちや終演後もたっぷり記録されている事からも大元マスターなのは明らかですが、それ以上に重要なのは全編を貫くサウンドそのもの。これがもう完全に別物級なのです。前作『DEFINITIVE NEWCASTLE 1978』とは違ってサウンドボードと間違えるタイプではないものの、空気感を食い破ってくる芯が極太で、ディテールもくっきり。さすが関係者録音だけあってオーディエンス・ノイズも極少で、「ゼロ距離のド密着感」ではなく「目の目に居る間近感」のリアリティが素晴らしいのです。
そして、何よりダビング痕のまるでない瑞々しさ、ナチュラル感が圧倒的。特に素晴らしいのが高音の鳴り。従来盤はスポイルされた高音のディテールをムリ上げたような感じで、ヒスの中からシュワシュワと歪んだシンバルが浮き上がっていました。しかし本作は機微の機微まで綺麗に残り、密度もたっぷり。高音も加工するまでもなく美しく、中低音とのバランスも自然。まさに現場そのもののサウンドがスピーカーから吹き出してくるのです。
このツアーのセットはお馴染みなので省略しますが、ポイントは「Bottoms Up!」の有無。本作は幸運にも「アリ」でして、ステージ・テンションで爆上がりした「炎の導火線＝９曲＋伝説の爆撃機＝２曲」を関係者席で思う存分、現場体験できるのです。
