VAN HALEN shocked first visit to Japan where the “legendary” makurakotoba feels lukewarm. The gift release decision is a valuable original recording that conveys the scene with a sense of the times.
The performance of “June 19, 1978: Tokyo Kosei Nenkin Kaikan” was imbued with this work. It is an audience recording that set the longest record. At our shop, we have archived their first visit to Japan with many masterpiece live albums, but with the death of Eddie, more and more people are coming into contact with audience recordings. First of all, let’s organize the collection from the schedule at that time for such people.

Above, all 9 performances. The beginning was Tokyo 4DAYS in Shinjuku & Nakano, and this work was the second concert in the early stages. Speaking of the symbol of the first visit to Japan, the absolute masterpiece “DEFINITIVE TOKYO’S ON FIRE (Zodiac 308)” reigns, but this work is also before the second performance.
This work recorded at such a show is a real audience where the scent of that time blows out from the speakers. The ticket photo is also posted on the back jacket, but this work is the ultimate Gene brand that was made into a CD directly from the actual Omoto Master who was in “A row on the 2nd floor”. It’s not the type that can be touted from that position as “zero distance!” And “close contact !!”, but it’s not (never) a sound that’s hard to hear. Above all, the freshness is fresh because it is directly from the Omoto master, and the sound without dubbing deterioration is pleasant.
The sound is a full show that renews the longest on the second day of Shinjuku. The cut with the period pattern tape change was destined, and in the existing group, there was a 90-minute reverse cut of the tape around “Somebody Get Me A Doctor”. This work is no exception to that example, but the timing of the cut is different from the conventional one, and by supplementing it, the show is seamlessly recorded completely. Moreover, considering the parts before and after the show, there is no doubt that it is the longest record of the day. And what was played at that full show …

The set in which “Last Night” played on the first day was dropped and replaced with “Down In Flames” is a standard one for the first visit to Japan, and it is almost the same as the symbol board “DEFINITIVE TOKYO’S ON FIRE”. And the mood of the first visit to Japan that wraps such a set is wonderful. Because it is on the second floor, it is a recording that gives a bird’s-eye view of the mood of the venue, and the contrast that is overwhelming during the performance and suddenly comes back to life between songs is very Japanese. I can hear a unique language-like voice that is a fusion of “Davido!” And “Chaaaa !!”, but the voice is bright yellow and high-pitched as if it was sucked with helium. The breath of the audience, which is completely different from the recent “yellow cheers in the old days”, is also full of scent in 1978.
VAN HALEN’s first visit to Japan was a shock to Japan in the midst of the Western music boom. It is a document album that you can feel not only the fierce performance but also the atmosphere of Japan that is overwhelmed and awakened to new rock. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1978年６月19日：東京厚生年金会館」公演。その最長記録を更新したオーディエンス録音です。当店では彼らの初来日を幾多の傑作ライヴアルバムでアーカイヴしてきましたが、エディ逝去を期に新たにオーディエンス録音に触れる方も増えて参りました。まずは、そんな方々のためにも当時の日程からコレクションを整理してみましょう。

以上、全９公演。冒頭は新宿＆中野での東京４DAYSで、本作はその序盤２公演目にあたるコンサートでした。初来日の象徴と言えば、絶対名盤『DEFINITIVE TOKYO’S ON FIRE（Zodiac 308）』が君臨しているわけですが、本作はその２公演前でもあります。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、当時の薫りがスピーカーから濃厚に吹き出すリアル・オーディエンス。裏ジャケにもチケット写真を掲載していますが、本作は「２階Ａ列」に居た大元マスターの現物からダイレクトにCD化した究極ジェネの銘品。そのポジションから「距離感ゼロ！」「ド密着!!」と喧伝できるタイプではないのですが、かと言って聴きづらいサウンドでは（決して）ない。何よりも大元マスター直だからこその鮮度が瑞々しく、ダビング劣化のない鳴りが気持ちいいのです。
そのサウンドで描かれるのは、新宿２日目の最長を更新するフルショウ。時代柄テープ・チェンジでのカットは宿命で、既発群では「Somebody Get Me A Doctor」辺りで90分テープの反転カットがありました。本作もその例に漏れないのですが、従来とはカットのタイミングが異なり、補填する事でシームレスにショウを完全収録。しかもショウ前後のパートも考慮すると、この日の最長記録なのは間違いありません。そして、そのフルショウで演奏されたのは……

……と、このようになっています。初日に演奏された「Last Night」が落ちて「Down In Flames」に入れ替わったセットは初来日の標準的なもので、象徴盤『DEFINITIVE TOKYO’S ON FIRE』ともほぼ同じになりました。そして、そんなセットを包み込む初来日のムードが素晴らしい。２階席ということもあってか会場のムードを俯瞰するような録音でもあり、演奏中は圧倒され、曲間になって急に息を吹き返すコントラストがいかにも日本らしい。「デヴィッドォ！」と「キャアア!!」が融合した独自言語のような嬌声も聞こえるのですが、その声がまた真っ黄色でヘリウムで吸ったかのように甲高い。昨今の「昔は黄色かった声援」とはまるで違うピチピチとした観客の息吹も1978年の薫り満点なのです。
まさに洋楽ブーム真っ直中の日本にド級の衝撃をブチかましたVAN HALENの初来日。その苛烈な演奏だけでなく、打ちのめされ、新たなロックに覚醒していく日本の大気もリアルに感じられるドキュメント・アルバムです。伝説的な初来日コレクションを充実させてくれる貴重で飛びっきりリアルなオリジナル録音。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
