ULTRAVOX in 1980 played a breakthrough on the famous board “VIENNA”. A new cassette of the prestigious Kinney who captured them shining as the flagship of the new romantic is newly discovered.
キ What was blown into such Kinney Master was “London Performance on December 13, 1980”. This is the finest audience recording recorded at the traditional famous venue “Hammersmith Odeon”. At the time, they struggled to lose the founder John Fox, but pioneered a new world with “VIENNA” with Midge Euro. It was just a great success. This work is a live album that conveys the turning point scene with the finest sound. First, let’s review the steps after joining Midge and check the show position.

This is ULTRAVOX from joining Midge to 1980. Produced “VIENNA” while performing one-off gigs and tours with THIN LIZZY, and announced one year and three months after joining. We have begun a full world tour. The Hamassmith performance of this work was also the final performance to end such a turbulent “1980”.
39 This work which vacuum-packed the site 39 years ago from now is exactly the finest audience recording. Anyway, neat and beautiful. The clarity that pursues the beauty of Kinney’s unique guest records is breathtakingly breathing, and this work is on at all times. The proof of the audience is also engraved on the tone and vocal sound, but that does not mean that it is a sense of distance. It’s a bit different from the sound board-like feeling of contact, but the core is strong and the density is high.
And freshness. This recording was released as a part of the LP “ECHOES OF PLEASURE (U7880)” in the analog era, but this work is exceptionally fresh only for Omoto cassette. From the rise of each sound to the moment of silence, there is no distortion and fine details are left untouched, and not only the members but also the presence of the musical instrument itself. As a matter of fact, there are some sound breaks that seem to be missing in Angkor’s “Astradyne” “Kings Lead Hat”, so it is not perfect (it is a mistake that is not Kinney), but even if it is pressed, the basic quality is too great Is.

As a matter of fact, this work was just a month before “LIVE IN CONCERT”, but the BBC’s official edition only included the “VIENNA” number because it was in line with the broadcast frame. However, this work is a kinny recording of Kinney. For that reason, it includes the number of John Fox era and the single song at that time. Even with “VIENNA”, he plays all nine songs on the album.
After that, even if Midge just participates in the initial song that disappears, it will be dizzy, but the performance through the show is also wonderful. Despite being commercialized, techno rhythms and cool synths still add European romanticism at this point, with plenty of scents from the Fox era. It is a new show, but a full show unique to the 1980s that also inherited the legacy of Fox.
The audience breathes to create a sense of the times. This work seems to be Kinney and the audience noise during the performance is minimal, but cheers also occur between the songs. And you can clearly see that it grows bigger as one song or one song is piled up. It explodes in the middle of “Vienna”. The singles rushed to second place in the UK charts in January 1981, but the buds have already emerged. It is a live album that allows you to witness the breakthrough scene with the finest sound.

UL ULTRAVOX has never been “changed” while receiving the wind of great success throughout the body. It is one of the super finest reprints of such a full show only in 1980 that was reprinted from the prestigious Kinney original cassette. 名盤『VIENNA』でブレイクスルーを果たした1980年のULTRAVOX。ニューロマンティックの旗手として輝く彼らを捉えた名門キニーのオリジナル・カセットが新発掘です。
そんなキニー・マスターに吹き込まれていたのは「1980年12月13日ロンドン公演」。伝統の名会場“ハマースミス・オデオン”で記録された極上オーディエンス録音です。当時の彼らは、創始者ジョン・フォックスを失う苦境に立たされながら、ミッジ・ユーロを迎えた『VIENNA』で新世界を開拓。見事に大成功を収めたばかりでした。本作は、そんなターニング・ポイントの現場を極上サウンドで伝えるライヴアルバム。まずは、ミッジ加入後の歩みを振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これがミッジ加入から1980年までのULTRAVOX。単発的なギグやTHIN LIZZYとのツアーをこなしつつ『VIENNA』を製作し、加入から１年３ヶ月後に発表。満を持してのワールド・ツアーに乗り出しました。本作のハマスミス公演は、そんな激動の“1980年”を締めくくる最終公演でもありました。
今から39年前の現場を真空パックした本作は、まさに極上のオーディエンス録音。とにかく端正で美麗。キニーならではの客録の美を追究したクリアさは脈々と息づきつつ、本作はいつになくオン。音色やヴォーカルの鳴りにオーディエンスの証も刻まれてはいるのですが、だからと言ってそれが距離感になっていない。サウンドボード的なド密着感とも少し違うものの、とにかく芯が力強く、そして密度の高いのです。
そして、鮮度。この録音はアナログ時代に３枚組LP『ECHOES OF PLEASURE（U 7880）』の一部としても世に出たことがあるのですが、本作は大元カセットだけに瑞々しさが格別。１音１音の立ち上がりから消音の刹那まで歪みもなく微細部まで綺麗に残され、メンバーだけではなく楽器自体の存在感まで宿っている。実のところ、アンコールの「Astradyne」「Kings Lead Hat」で録音漏れと思われる音切れもあるので完璧ではない（キニーらしからぬミスですね）のですが、それを押しても基本のクオリティが素晴らしすぎるのです。
そんなサウンドで描かれるのは、生まれ変わったばかりのフレッシュなショウ。80年代初期の彼らと言えば、オフィシャルの発掘ライヴアルバム『BBC RADIO 1 LIVE IN CONCERT』も有名ですので、比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。実のところ、本作は『LIVE IN CONCERT』のちょうど１ヶ月前のショウだったのですが、BBCの公式盤は放送枠に沿ったためか『VIENNA』ナンバーしか収録されませんでした。しかし、本作はキニーの一気録音。そのため、ジョン・フォックス時代のナンバーや当時のシングル曲も収録。『VIENNA』にしても、アルバムの全９曲をすべて演奏しているのです。
その後は消滅する初期曲にミッジが参加しているだけでも目眩がしますが、ショウを貫くパフォーマンスも素晴らしい。コマーシャルに変化したとは言え、まだこの時点ではテクノ的なリズムやクールなシンセがヨーロッパ的なロマンティシズムも醸しており、フォックス時代の残り香もたっぷりと感じられる。新しいけれど、フォックスのレガシーも受け継いでいた「1980年」ならではのフルショウなのです。
さらに時代感を醸すのが観客の息吹。本作はキニーらしく演奏中のオーディエンス・ノイズは極少なのですが、曲間には喝采も巻き起こる。そして、それが１曲また１曲と積み上げるほどに盛大になっていくのもハッキリと分かるのです。それが爆発するのが中盤の「Vienna」。シングルが全英チャート２位まで駆け上がるのは翌1981年１月のことですが、その萌芽は既に現れている。まさにブレイクスルーの現場に極上サウンドで立ち会えるライヴアルバムなのです。
