The masterpieces “DAMN THE TORPEDOES” and “HARD PROMISES” shined on platinum albums in quick succession, and Tom Petty & THE HEARTBREAKERS in 1981 enjoyed the heyday of the wind. The original master of the legendary master Mike Millard who tells the scene is excavated.

This is Tom Petty in 1981. In 1980, the year before, he visited Europe and Oceania, including the legendary first visit to Japan, but in 1981 it changed. It wasn’t a world tour, it was limited to North America, and I was on the circuit for about 4 months. The Inglewood performance of this work is the beginning of that. It was the 14th performance of “North America # 1”.
This work recorded at such a show is truly an excellent audience recording. As expected, the strength of the core centered on the guitar and the delicate details down to the fine parts are truly wonderful. However, the taste is a little different from the usual mirrored work. The cause seems to have been the setup of the venue. Speaking of “THE FORUM”, it’s the main battlefield for Millard, and it’s like a garden at home where every band / artist has made masterpieces. The ticket for the day was in the 4th row, and it was about “Isn’t it a bit of a sweet spot?”, But I was surprised when I entered. The front two rows were crushed to expand the stage, and it was in the second row.
Usually close and lucky! However, it was too close for a particular recording artist. The biggest problem is that it is too close to security, not to mention the wraparound of the response. It seems that the early 80’s was a tough time for recording, and it was a cold sweat that Millard, who was a 100-year-old warrior, would also be arrested. Moreover, PA is immediately overhead. He couldn’t point in the direction of PA with the microphone hidden, and he picked up the wraparound.

If you ask me, it certainly sounds like that, but it’s because it’s a mirrored standard that is said to be “miracle and natural” and “more than a sound board for the time being”. これが1981年のトム・ペティ。前年の1980年には伝説の初来日を始めとして欧州やオセアニアも巡っていましたが、1981年は一転。ワールド・ツアーではなくあくまで北米限定で約４ヶ月じっくりとサーキットしていました。本作のイングルウッド公演は、そんな中でも序盤。「北米#1」の14公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに絶品のオーディエンス録音。さすがミラードと申しますか、ギターを中心とした芯の力強さ、微細部に至るまで繊細なディテールも実に見事です。ただし、いつものミラード作品とはちょっと趣きも異なる。その原因は、会場の設営にあったようです。“THE FORUM”と言えば、ミラードにとっては主戦場であり、あらゆるバンド／アーティストで名作をモノにしてきた自宅の庭のようなもの。この日のチケットは４列目で「スウィート・スポットにはしてはちょっと前気味かな？」くらいだったそうですが、いざ入場したらビックリ。ステージ拡張のために最前２列が潰され、２列目になっていたのです。
普段であれば近くてラッキー！となるところですが、こだわりの録音アーティストにとっては近すぎた。反響の回り込みもさることながら、一番の問題はセクリティから近すぎる事。80年代初期というと録音にも厳しい時代だったのか、百戦錬磨のミラードも逮捕されないかと冷や汗ものだったそうです。しかも、ＰＡがすぐ頭上。マイクを隠したままＰＡの方向に向けられず、回り込みも拾ってしまったそうです。
以上の経緯は、ミラードと観覧していたジムＲの証言。言われてみれば、確かにそう聞こえなくもないのですが、それはあくまで「奇跡で当たり前」「とりあえずサウンドボード以上」と言われるミラード基準だからこそ。通常の録音家であれば、数年に１本録れるかどうかの最高傑作レベルであり、むしろ「このサウンドでも満足してないのか……」と溜息が漏れるほど瑞々しい美録音でもあるのです。
そんな端麗サウンドで描かれるのは、プラチナム・アーティストとしての自信と勢いが漲るフルショウ。80年代のトムと言えば、（やや時期はハズますが）伝統の公式盤『PACK UP THE PLANTATION: LIVE!』を引き合いにするのが定例。いつも通り、比較しながら整理してみましょう。
