With the success of “SOUNDS OF SILENCE” and “PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY & THYME”, S&G established themselves as stars, and the album “BOOKENDS”, which can be said to be their final monaural release, was their last monaural release. The A-side alone took nearly a year to make, and the experience of listening to the intricate, artistic sound in monaural is truly refreshing. Looking back, it can be said that it is an album suitable for stereo, and it seems that monaural, which was in a terminal state, was well made.
From the shocking opening “Save The Life Of My Child” that shatters the image of S&G up to that point, a monaural-like solid texture that is different from the stereo flood-like finish rushes in. In the stereo, the backing chorus resounded with a strong echo, but here I have the impression that I can hear a more real voice.
In addition, “Overs”, which is the main part of Simon’s rendition, is a song that makes you cry in vintage LP condition, which is indispensable, but Prof Stoned demonstrates his outstanding skills here as well. A superb recording state where you can fully enjoy the super clean sound with no scratch noise and the warm texture unique to monaural. How can I remove the noise of the board from such a quiet performance and put it in a transparent state?
Also, it may be a strange experience to listen to the “old man’s conversation” in monaural, where each person’s conversation flew from left to right using stereo (laughs).

The B-side “Punky’s Dilemma”, which switches from the concept side A-side to the strongest hit single collection, starts quietly from the intro, but this is also recorded by Prof Stoned with an imposing clean sound.
To tell the truth, only the digitization of this album has been attempted in the past, and the nostalgic Purple Chick has distributed it under the title “ALTERNATE BOOKENDS”. However, it goes without saying that the version that Prof Stoned tried a few years later contained a much cleaner monaural LP.
Rather, “ALTERNATE BOOKENDS” is still valuable in that it contained an alternate take of the album with the best sound quality. Therefore, by combining the rare sound source of the same board with the one of Prof Stoned, this time it is a package called the strongest version.

In the rare sound source part, the alternative take of “Save The Life Of My Child” that opened the album is shocking. The song, which was extremely spacey using the Moog synthesizer, which was the latest equipment at the time, can be heard here in a version centered on Simon’s acoustic guitar. Nonetheless, even at this point, sounds using the Moog are flying around, and you can see that they were trying to put together a crazy image from the beginning.
Also, “Groundhog” is an unreleased song that was shelved just because the two of them recorded a demo. Still, I was fascinated by the wonderful guitar handling unique to Simon in the 60’s. Furthermore, the mono single mix of “A Hazy Shade Of Winter” is different from the album even if it is the same thing, the intro starts with a slight fade-out, and echoes are added to the two vocals. And the sound of the ending organ is loud.
And what is surprising is that all these rare sound sources such as alternate takes and demos can be heard with the highest sound quality. That’s why I think you can understand why this album alone is a combination of mono and rare sound sources.
The best transfer of S&G’s monaural final album “BOOKENDS” will be released with special contents, coupled with different versions and demos of the same album!

「SOUNDS OF SILENCE」と「PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY & THYME」の成功でスターの地位を築いたS&Gの到達点とも言えるアルバム「BOOKENDS」が彼らにとって最後のモノラル・リリースとなりました。A面だけでも一年近くを費やして作られたアルバムということもあり、その込み入った芸術的サウンドをモノラルで聞く体験は実に新鮮。裏を返せばステレオ向きなアルバムと言え、正に末期な状態にあったモノラルがよくぞ作られたものだと思えるほど。
それまでのS＆Gのイメージを打ち破るような衝撃のオープニング「Save The Life Of My Child」からしてステレオの洪水のような仕上がりと違うモノラルらしい骨太な質感が押し寄せて来る。ステレオでは強いエコーと共にバックコーラスが響き渡っていましたが、ここではもっと生身の声が聞こえてくる印象。
またサイモンの弾き語りメインな「Overs」はバチバチ必須のビンテージLPコンディション泣かせな曲である訳ですが、ここでもProf Stonedがその卓越した手腕をいかんなく発揮。スクラッチノイズの一切ない超クリーンサウンド、なおかつモノラルならではのウォーミーな質感をたっぷり味わえる見事な収録状態。どうしたらこんな静かな演奏から盤のノイズを取り払って透き通ったような状態で収められるのでしょうか。
またステレオを生かして各人の会話が左右から飛び交っていた「老人の会話」をモノラルで聞くというのも不思議な体験だと言えるかもしれません（笑）。

コンセプト・サイドだったA面から最強のヒットシングル集に切り替わるB面の「Punky’s Dilemma」がまたイントロから静かに始まる曲ですが、これもProf Stonedが堂々のクリーンサウンドにて収録。
実を言うと本アルバムのモノのデジタル化だけは過去に試みられたことがあり、懐かしのPurple Chickが「ALTERNATE BOOKENDS」というタイトルで流通させてくれたことがあったのです。しかし、それから数年後にProf Stonedがトライしたバージョンの方がはるかにクリーンにモノラルLPを収めてくれていた事は言うまでもありません。
むしろ「ALTERNATE BOOKENDS」はアルバムの別テイクを最高の音質で収めてくれていたという点で今も価値が高い。そこで同盤のレア音源とProf Stonedのモノを組み合わせることで今回は最強バージョンというパッケージに。

レア音源パートでは何と言ってもアルバムの幕を開けた「Save The Life Of My Child」の別テイクが衝撃的。当時の最新機器だったムーグ・シンセサイザーを駆使して極度にスペイシーな仕上がりとなっていた同曲が、ここではサイモンのアコギを中心としたバージョンで聞けるのだから。とはいえ、この時点でもムーグを使った音が飛び交っており、当初からぶっ飛んだイメージにまとめようとしていたことが伺えます。
また「Groundhog」は二人がデモ録りしただけでお蔵入りしてしまった未発表曲ですが、なるほど悪くないもののアルバムには不釣り合いな感が否めません。それでも60年代のサイモンならではの見事なギターさばきにはうっとり。さらに「A Hazy Shade Of Winter」のモノ・シングル・ミックスは同じモノでもアルバムとは違っており、ほんのりフェイドアウトでイントロが始まり、二人のボーカルにエコーが加えられている。そしてエンディングのオルガンの音が大きいといった具合。
そして驚くべきはこれら別テイクやデモといったレア音源がすべて最高の音質で聞かれるということ。だからこそ本アルバムだけはモノとレア音源のカップリングで出される理由が解ってもらえることかと。
S&Gのモノラル終演アルバムとなった傑作「BOOKENDS」のベストトランスファーに同アルバムの別バージョンやデモなどをカップリングした必殺の内容にてリリース！
