“PURE INSTINCT Tour” is a little-known era with few records, while delivering masterpieces of the authentic SCORPIONS section. A professional shot work that allows you to witness the full show is now available.
This work was filmed at the “Moscow performance on July 19, 1997.” This is the multi-camera pro shot. Speaking of SCORPIONS in the late 90’s, they pushed forward with other styles such as electro experimentation and orchestral/acoustic. “PURE INSTINCT” was also the last Masamichi album just before entering the experimental era. That live performance is the culmination of the Golden Age, and our soundboard album “PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996: FM MASTER (Shades 1766)” is gaining popularity as its definitive edition. This is the whole picture of “PURE INSTINCT Tour”. “PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996” was released just after the main US tour ended, but the Moscow performance of this work was “Europe #2” which traveled around the world for another year. It was a concert on the final day. Speaking of SCORPIONS at that time, it was a symbol of the end of the Cold War, and there is an image that they were performing live in Central and Eastern Europe for many years, but that is not actually the case. This was their first performance in Russia in 8 years since “MOSCOW MUSIC PEACE FESTIVAL”.
Although it has been a while, it is true that SCORPIONS was extremely popular in Eastern Europe. The show will be broadcast on local television. This work has been made into a DVD from the best master. The biggest point is the natural feel. In fact, since it was broadcast in Eastern Europe in the 1990s, it is a bit too rough to be called “completely official!”, but for that reason, conventional masters forcibly raised the highlights and destroyed the details. . On the other hand, this work is a newly discovered young master, so the colors are clear even without digital processing. Since there is no highlight processing, you can enjoy the broadcast waves of the time without losing detail.
The full show of the “PURE INSTINCT Tour”, which was the paradise of honest hard rock, is depicted with such natural visual beauty. Since it has been more than a year since the tour started, the set is different from the sound board masterpiece “PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996”, so let’s organize it while comparing it here.

…and it looks like this. The biggest point of the “PURE INSTINCT Tour” is the group of new songs that will no longer be played. It’s a shame that “Stone In My Shoe”, which can be heard on “PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996”, was dropped, but instead (?) the sense of culmination has been improved. In the first half of the show, a solid section of “LOVEDRIVE” was set up, and the number of “BLACKOUT” was also increased. Furthermore, “We’ll Burn The Sky” from the Uli Jon Roth era has been revived for the first time in 14 years.
Among these, “Wild Child” is interesting. They appear in large numbers as cheerleader-like female dancers, which is very strange. They come casually and just sway their bodies without any set movements (it’s like an APA Hotel commercial). The meaningless “just appearing” feeling gives off a strong amateurish smell, and the melancholy Celtic melody and kunekune don’t suit each other at all.
Another thing that makes you wonder is “Dynamite”. Before the song begins, Herman Larebel comes on stage and is introduced. “Oh!” He gets excited, but when the song slowly starts, it’s James Kotak who is hitting it. The drum solo that just breaks in is also very cool, so why on earth is Herman going to Moscow? Why was it introduced at this timing? It’s a complete mystery.

★Multi-camera professional shot of “July 19, 1997 Moscow Performance”. A newly discovered Wakajane master was broadcast on TV by a local station and turned into a DVD. Unlike the previous master, which forcibly increases the highlights, the color remains natural and clear. Since it has not been processed, you can enjoy the broadcast radio waves at the time without losing detail. It is a full professional shot full of various highlights, such as the collective set, the precious “Oh Girl (I Wanna Be With You)”, and “Wild Child” where a large number of unusual dancers appear.

正調SCORPIONS節の名作を送り出しつつ、記録の少ない穴場時代となっている“PURE INSTINCT Tour”。そのフルショウを目撃できるプロショット作品が登場です。
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1997年７月19日モスクワ公演」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。90年代後期のSCORPIONSと言えば、エレクトロ実験やオーケストラ／アコースティックなどの他流試合に邁進。『PURE INSTINCT』は、そんな実験時代に突入する直前の最後の正道アルバムでもありました。そのライヴは黄金時代の集大成であり、その決定盤として当店のサウンドボード・アルバム『PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996: FM MASTER（Shades 1766）』が人気を博しております。そんな中で本作はどんなポジションなのか。まずは、当時のツアー・スケジュールから振り返っておきましょう。

これが“PURE INSTINCT Tour”の全体像。『PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996』はメインの全米ツアーが終わった直後というタイミングでしたが、本作のモスクワ公演はそこからさらに１年ほど世界を巡った「欧州#2」。その最終日にあたるコンサートでした。当時のSCORPIONSと言えば冷戦終結時代の象徴であり、年がら年中東欧でライヴを行っていたようなイメージもありますが、実際にはそうでもない。本作にしても“MOSCOW MUSIC PEACE FESTIVAL”以来、８年ぶりのロシア公演でした。
久々とは言え、SCORPIONSが東欧で絶大な人気を誇っていたのは事実。そのショウは現地局でテレビ放送。本作は、そのベスト・マスターからDVD化されているのです。最大のポイントは、ナチュラル感。実のところ、90年代の東欧放送だけに「完全オフィシャル級！」と呼ぶにはややザラ付いたタイプでもあるのですが、それだけに従来マスターはハイライトを強引に上げて細部が潰れまくっていました。それに対して本作は新発掘の若ジャネ・マスターのため、デジタル加工なしでもくっきり発色。ハイライト加工もしていないため、ディテールも潰れずに当時の放送電波そのものを楽しめるのです。
そんなナチュラルな映像美で描かれるのは、正道ハードロックの桃源郷であった“PURE INSTINCT Tour”のフルショウ。ツアー開始から１年以上が経っていることもあり、セットはサウンドボード名盤『PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996』とも異なっていますので、ここで比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。“PURE INSTINCT Tour”最大のポイントと言えば、その後は演奏しなくなってしまう新曲群。『PURE INSTINCT IN GERMANY 1996』で聴けた「Stone In My Shoe」が落ちてしまったのは残念ですが、その代わり（？）集大成感はアップ。ショウの前半では『LOVEDRIVE』が固め撃ちセクションが設けられ、『BLACKOUT』ナンバーも増量。さらにはウリ・ジョン・ロート時代の「We’ll Burn The Sky」まで14年ぶりに復活を遂げています。
そんな中で面白いのが「Wild Child」。チアガールのような女性ダンサー大挙として登場するのですが、これがとっても妙。ワラワラと無造作にやって来て、決まった振りもなくクネクネと身体を揺らしているだけ（APAホテルのCMみたいな感じです）。その意味不明な「出てきただけ」感が強烈な素人臭を発散していますし、そもそもケルト風の哀愁メロディとクネクネがまったく似合っていません。
もう１ヶ所「え？」となるのが「Dynamite」。曲が始まる前にステージに出てきて紹介されるのがハーマン・ラレベル。「おぉ！」と盛り上がるものの、おもむろに曲が始まると叩いているのはジェイムズ・コタック。そのまま突入するドラム・ソロもコタックですし、一体ハーマンは何しにモスクワへ？　なんでこのタイミングで紹介された？　まったくナゾです。

実験的な他流試合に臨む前、自らの手でSCORPIONS流ハードロックの正道を総括していた“PURE INSTINCT Tour”。その充実度に反して、オーディエンス録音ですら少ない音源稀少時代でもありました。そんな穴場時代をマルチカメラのフル・プロショットで楽しめる……この醍醐味は何物にも代えられません。そんなコレクター冥利に尽きる貴重映像、ナチュラル感たっぷりな最高峰更新マスターで存分にご体験ください。
