SCORPIONS in 1982, who made a breakthrough with the famous board “BLACKOUT” and jumped to the jockey of the music of the new era “Heavy Metal”. “Performance in London on April 24, 1982” is engraved on this work. It is a superb audience recording recorded at the traditional venue “Hammersmith Odeon”. Speaking of 1982, it is memorable that a large-scale visit to Japan was realized. Including that side, let’s first look back at the whole picture of the world tour that opened the door of prime.

This is an overview of his activities during the “BLACKOUT” era. The Hammersmith performance of this work is the 16th performance of the “UK” tour immediately after the release of the album. It was a concert on the second day of two consecutive performances at the same venue.
This show is famous for its excellent recordings, but this work is a new excavation master that has greatly updated its highest peak. It is a product directly digitized from the original cassette of the prestigious “Kinney”. In fact, the sound that came out of the cassette is the highest ever. A few years ago, full-length masters began to appear, but they sounded strangely thin (perhaps because of Gene, or because of digital compression). On the other hand, this work, which was created by original cassette, has a powerful bass. Of course, not only the bass is prominent, but the density of the midrange is also full, and the treble is well-defined and stretches beautifully, and the sound is natural. Because it is not a balance created by digital processing, but a fresh master freshness, it is easy to listen to even if the whole band aggressively rampages.
In addition, the realistic presence of the venue is amazing. “BLACKOUT” is the most high-tension masterpiece in the history of the Scorpion, and it is being propagated throughout the Hammersmith venue. The applause that erupts from the venue is like in Japan, and the cheering that erupts between songs is like the delight of British rockers. If you write like this, you may imagine a screaming recording, but that is not the case. It does not threaten the powerful performance sound at all, but rather it is a frenzy that scales up by completely synchronizing with sharp performance.
A full show that explodes the band’s potential based on the historical masterpiece “BLACKOUT” that is depicted with such a natural and sharp sound. Speaking of their golden age, the traditional board “WORLD WIDE LIVE” is the standard, and if it is a “BLACKOUT Tour”, our press masterpiece “SHINJUKU BLACKOUT (Calm & Storm 018)” is also a big standard. … and it looks like this. With “LOVEDRIVE” as the axis, the number after joining Matthias Japs is piled up, and the rare “Don’t Make No Promises” is also delicious. What catches your ears even more is the number from the Uri era, which was completely absent from “WORLD WIDE LIVE”. “He’s A Woman She’s A Man” will be sealed for 11 years after that, “We’ll Burn the Sky” will also be sealed for 14 years, and “Steamrock Fever” will drop regularly from “North America # 1” above. After that, even limited songs that have not been played until now have been shown. It was also the last tour that was compatible with the sharp metal sound of the 80’s while leaving the shadow of the Uri era.
A performance that spells out a set that was unique to that time would also have been possible at that time. Especially overwhelming is Klaus Meine. After “LOVE AT FIRST STING”, he gradually shifted to a taste-based singing style, but here he continues to shout tremendously. Even in “BLACKOUT”, I wanted to say, “Did you really break your throat?” I want to ask again, “Are you going to break your throat today?”
And the highlight of such a full show is the big las “Can’t Get Enough”. Here, Michael Schenker jumps in and listens to the brothers co-star. Michael was working on Apocalypse at the time, probably around the time Cozy Powell left. With the vivid sound of this work, you can enjoy that unique tone perfectly with the sense of ear.

これが『BLACKOUT』時代の活動概要。本作のハマースミス公演はアルバム発売直後の「英国」ツアー16公演目。同会場の２連続公演のうち２日目にあたるコンサートでした。
このショウは以前から名録音が残された事でも有名ですが、本作はその最高峰を大幅更新した新発掘マスター。名門“キニー”のオリジナル・カセットからダイレクトにデジタル化された銘品なのです。実際、カセットから流れ出てきたサウンドは過去最高。数年前から全長マスターも出回り始めていたのですが、それらは（ジェネのせいか、あるいはデジタル圧縮を経たのか）音が妙に痩せていました。それに対し、オリジナル・カセット起こしの本作は低音もぶっとくド迫力。もちろん、低音だけ突出しているわけではなく、中域の密度もパンパンですし、高音もヌケの良くキレイに伸び、鳴りもナチュラル。デジタル加工で作りだしたバランスではなく瑞々しいマスター鮮度による鮮やかさなので、バンド全体がアグレッシヴに暴れても聴きやすさが揺るがないのです。
さらに加えて、会場のリアルな臨場感もスゴい。『BLACKOUT』は蠍団史上もっともハイテンションな名盤ですが、それがハマースミスの会場中に伝播している。会場中から沸き上がる手拍子は日本のようにビシッと揃い、曲間で沸き立つ声援は英国ロック野郎共の歓喜が吹き出すよう。こう書くと絶叫まみれの録音をイメージされるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。強力な演奏音を脅かす事は一切なく、むしろシャープな演奏と完全シンクロしてスケールアップさせるような熱狂なのです。
そんなナチュラル＆シャープな極上サウンドで画かれるのは、歴史的名作『BLACKOUT』をモノにしたバンド・ポテンシャルが爆発するフルショウ。彼らの黄金時代と言えば伝統盤『WORLD WIDE LIVE』が基準ですし、“BLACKOUT Tour”なら当店のプレス名盤『SHINJUKU BLACKOUT（Calm & Storm 018）』も大定番。それぞれと比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。『LOVEDRIVE』を軸としてマティアス・ヤプス加入後のナンバーがてんこ盛りで、レアな「Don’t Make No Promises」も美味しい。それ以上に耳を惹くのが『WORLD WIDE LIVE』では皆無となったウリ時代のナンバー。「He’s A Woman She’s A Man」ならその後11年封印、「We’ll Burn the Sky」も14年封印されますし、「Steamrock Fever」に至っては上記「北米#1」からレギュラー落ち。その後、現在まで演奏されていない限定曲まで披露されている。ウリ時代の陰影を残しつつ、80年代のシャープなメタル・サウンドと両立していた最後のツアーでもあったのです。
当時ならではのセットを綴るパフォーマンスもまた、当時なればこそ。特に圧倒的なのはクラウス・マイネ。『LOVE AT FIRST STING』以降は徐々に味わい系の歌い方にシフトしていくものの、ここでは凄まじいシャウトを連発している。『BLACKOUT』でも「本当にノドを壊したの？」と言いたくなったものですが、ライヴ現場でも一切の手抜きなし……いや、ステージ・テンションでさらに爆上げしている。改めて「今日でノドを壊す気？」と訊きたくなるほどです。
そして、そんなフルショウでもハイライトなのが大ラスの「Can’t Get Enough」。ここではマイケル・シェンカーが飛び入り参加し、兄弟共演を聴かせてくれます。当時のマイケルは『黙示録』を制作中で、恐らくはコージー・パウエルが脱退した頃でした。本作の鮮やかサウンドでは、あの独特なトーンも耳元感覚でばっちり楽しめます。
