Early SCORPIONS are attracting the attention of collectors as the impact excavation progresses. This week, we’re back with a very early live album featuring the genius Michael Schenker, who was just 18 years old!
It was “April 19, 1973 Minden performance” that was imbued with such a work. It is the excellent audience recording. Speaking of Minden, the shocking work “MINDEN 1974 (Zodiac 491)” that shakes collectors all over the world comes to mind, but while that was after joining Uli Jon Roth, this work was in the Michael era. The opportunity to introduce itself is also valuable, so let’s take a broader overview of the activities of the initial SCORPIONS.

This is SCORPIONS from 1972 to 1974. From the end of March 1973, there was a UFO West Germany tour, where I met Michael. It will be joined in June. The Minden performance of this work was about two months before that. It was the 23rd performance of “West Germany # 2”, which UFO visited but had not yet joined.
This work, which was made into such a show, is not a rare sound that is just as good as it can be heard. It’s not as soundboard-like as “MINDEN 1974,” but it’s not defeated by the extra-thickness of the core and the fine details. Although it can be understood from the roundness of the sound that it is an audience recording, it is not far away. If “MINDEN 1974” is a “close contact” with zero space, this work feels like a “closed room” in a small club. A young Klaus Meine is screaming right in front of me, and the bass is clear from the attack sound to the line. Above all, the brother’s guitar can be heard clearly without becoming a dango.
And the early SCORPIONS drawn with that sound boldly incorporates improvisation, and is full of the taste of 70’s rock. Two songs have been selected from “LONESOME CROW”, but the title song is noteworthy. It was a big song on the album, but it was expanded further on the stage and performed for about 23 minutes (!). Moreover, before that, he played plenty of drum solos and jams, and he was really freaky. The recording of the other song “It All Depends” ends in the middle, but it is also a 9-minute long performance that includes bass and drum solos. A stage that seems to be an era when hard rock and prog rock were united together will be unfolded.
Michael is still shining in such a situation. Actually, the tone changed depending on the time, but the sound of V that can be heard in this work is the “phenomenon” itself. Whether it’s Bobby Sherman’s cover “Hey Little Woman” or the composer’s own “Far Away”, a beautiful and ephemeral tune dances. Of course, Michael’s improvisation is also a big success in jams. It’s a stage where you can feel “Michael on the eve of the phenomenon” rather than “SCORPIONS on the eve of FLY TO THE RAINBOW”.

It is a historic live album where you can experience the stage with a powerful yet beautiful sound. ★ A superb audience recording of “April 19, 1973 Minden performance” that conveys the stage of the Michael Schenker era. It is a closed-door recording that is irresistible on the scale of a club, and the thickness of the core and the fineness of the details are wonderful, yet it is also glossy without chattering. The young Klaus Meine is screaming right in front of him, and his brother’s guitar can be heard clearly without becoming a dango. The show is full of the taste of 70’s rock with bold improvisation, and the title song of “LONESOME CROW” is a big performance that lasts about 23 minutes. “Far Away”, played by the composer Michael himself, is also a must-listen live album.
衝撃発掘が進み、コレクターの耳目を集めている初期SCORPIONS。今週は、さらに遡って若干18歳だった天才マイケル・シェンカーを擁する極初期ライヴアルバムが登場です！
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1973年４月19日ミンデン公演」。その絶品オーディエンス録音です。ミンデンと言えば、世界中のコレクターを震撼させている衝撃作『MINDEN 1974（Zodiac 491）』が浮かびますが、あれがウリ・ジョン・ロート加入後だったのに対し、本作はマイケル時代。ご紹介する機会自体が貴重でもありますので、やや広めに初期SCORPIONSの活動概要を俯瞰してみましょう。

これが1972年ー1974年のSCORPIONS。1973年３月末からUFOの西独ツアーがあり、そこでマイケルと遭遇。６月に加入する運びとなります。本作のミンデン公演は、その約２ヶ月前。UFOが来訪しつつも、まだ加入話には至っていない「西ドイツ#2」の23公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウできろくされた本作は、聴けるだけ画で有り難いレア物サウンド……では、ありません。『MINDEN 1974』ほどサウンドボード的ではないにしても、芯の極太感もディテールの細やかさも負けていない。鳴りの丸みからオーディエンス録音とは分かるものの、かと言って遠さはない。『MINDEN 1974』が空間ゼロの「ド密着」だとすれば、本作は狭いクラブの「密室感」という感じ。すぐ目の前で若きクラウス・マイネで雄叫びを上げており、ベースもアタック音からラインまでくっきり。何より、兄弟ギターもダンゴにならず鮮明に聴き取れるのです。
そして、そのサウンドで描かれる初期SCORPIONSは、インプロヴィゼーションも大胆に盛り込まれ、70年代ロックの旨味たっぷり。『LONESOME CROW』からは２曲がセレクトされているのですが、特筆すべきはタイトル曲。アルバムでも大曲でしたが、ステージではさらに拡張されて約23分（！）もの熱演を披露している。しかも、その前にはドラムソロやジャムもたっぷりと演奏しており、実にフリーキー。もう１曲の「It All Depends」は途中で録音が終了してしまうのですが、そこでもベース＆ドラム・ソロを盛り込んで９分の長尺演奏。ハードロックとプログレが渾然一体となっていた時代らしいステージが繰り広げられるのです。
そんな中で光っているのは、やはりマイケル。実は時期によってトーンも変わっていたのですが、本作で聴けるＶの鳴りは『現象』そのもの。ボビー・シャーマンのカバー「Hey Little Woman」にしても、作曲者自ら弾く「Far Away」にしても、美しく儚げな旋律が踊る。もちろん、ジャムではマイケルのインプロも大活躍。「FLY TO THE RAINBOW前夜のSCORPIONS」と言うよりは「現象前夜のマイケル」を強く感じるステージなのです。
世界を制する蠍団の胎動期であり、天才ギタリストが羽ばたく前夜であった1973年。そのステージを力強くも美しいサウンドで体験できる歴史的なライヴアルバムです。ウリ時代やUFO時代とは違うけれども、その萌芽は確実に芽生えていたライヴ。どうぞ、本作でじっくりと現場体験してください。
