An unexpected sequel is born to the masterpiece of the “SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH” era by absolute master Mike Millard. Despite being in the same era/same venue, sister albums with completely different contents are now available.

This is the 1990/1991 Santana. The previous work “COSTA MESA 1990” was the early tour “North America # 2” about 3 months after the release of “SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH”, but this work is the final stage of the tour just one year later “North America # 5”. It was a concert corresponding to the 6th performance.
This work, which was recorded at such a show, is also superb this time. If you have experienced the previous work, you will understand, but the “Pacific Amphitheater” that became the scene is an amphitheater that opens wide like a fan. Therefore, there are no ceilings or walls that reflect sound, and the PA’s output sound is picked up directly. Moreover, this work is brilliant with a ring on the previous work. Of course, the previous work was also superb, and it is a difference in timbre nuances rather than audio superiority, but this work has a sharper core and a sharper outline. It’s a beautiful glowing sound that makes you feel even metallic luster.
More than just such a sound, the show itself is breathtaking. It is a long show that lasts for about 3 hours. The previous work “COSTA MESA 1990” was almost 2 hours, so it was a big performance that increased by 1.5 times. Let’s organize it while comparing it with the previous work here.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1991年９月６日コスタメサ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。熱心なコレクター諸兄ならもうピンと来ていると思いますが、本作の前作とは昨年発掘された『COSTA MESA 1990（Uxbridge 1474）』のこと。まずは、当時の活動スケジュールで姉妹作の位置関係を確認してみましょう。

これは1990年／1991年のSANTANA。前作『COSTA MESA 1990』は『SPIRITS DANCING IN THE FLESH』発売の約３ヶ月後というツアー初期「北米#2」でしたが、本作はそれから丁度１年後のツアー最末期「北米#5」。その６公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、今回も超極上。前作を体験された方ならピンと来ると思いますが、現場となった“パシフィック・アンフィシアター”は扇状に大きく開けた円形劇場。そのため、音を反射する天井も壁もなく、ＰＡの出力音をダイレクトに拾っているのです。しかも、本作は前作にも輪をかけてブリリアント。もちろん前作も超極上でしたし、オーディオ的優劣というよりは音色的なニュアンスの差なのですが、本作は芯が一層オンで輪郭がシャープ。金属光沢すら感じさせるほどに美しい輝きのサウンドなのです。
そんなサウンド以上にド肝を抜かれるのがショウそのもの。何と約３時間にも及ぶ長大なショウなのです。前作『COSTA MESA 1990』はほぼ２時間でしたから、1.5倍増という大熱演。ここで前作と比較しつつ、整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。例によってメドレー・アレンジもあるので厳密ではありませんが、ざっくり21曲。前作が15曲から大幅増なのですが単なる追加ではなく、かなり入れ替えられています。まだ製作されていない次作『MILAGRO』に収録されるレパートリーも披露されていますし、ボビー・ウーマックの「Save The Children」やマーヴィン・ゲイの「Right On」などのカバーも豊富。「Soul Sacrifice」にはジョン・コルトレーンの「A Love Supreme」も顔を覗かせる。あまりに長大でラストの「Jin-Go-Lo-Ba」が録音しきれずにテープが終わってしまうほどです。
そんな名曲の宝庫にあってハイライト中のハイライトなのがゲスト。「The Healer」と「Stripped Me Naked」でブギ・キング：ジョン・リー・フッカーが登場。豪華共演を聞かせてくれるのです。
