Rory Gallagher / Cleveland 1978 Soundboard / 2CDR / Uxbridge
The Agora Theater, Cleveland, Ohio, USA 20th November 1978
Rory Gallagher in 1978 returned to the power trio and turned to the hard route. A sound board album that directly pours live performances of origin regression into the brain is now available.
“November 20, 1978 Cleveland performance” is sealed in this work. It is the stereo sound board recording. Speaking of 1978, it was a turning point from a four-person formation with a keyboard to a trio. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s first look back at the schedule at the time and take a bird’s eye view of the positional relationship between the turning point and this work.
・ March 27-April 29: Europe #1 (20 performances)
《Lou Martin/Rod Diaz leaving → Ted McKenna joining》
・ June 1-July 2: Europe # 2 (4 performances)
《July-August “PHOTO-FINISH” Production》
・ August 18-September 30: Europe #3a (15 performances)
《“PHOTO-FINISH” released on October 1》
・October 1-October 30: Europe #3b (25 performances)
・November 8-December 4: North America (29 performances) ← Coco
・December 8-31: Europe #4a (14 performances)
This is Rory Gallagher in 1978. There are contradictions in the materials, so I can’t say that the details such as the number of performances are certain, but I think you can understand the general flow. Once the album was completed with a four-person organization, it was discarded, and the late Ted McKenna and Power Trio, who later joined MSG, were organized. We will create a masterpiece “PHOTO-FINISH”. Although the tour is mainly in Europe with a large number of people, the Cleveland performance of this work was an act of the “North America” leg that was sewn in between. This “North America” leg is also a famous production area for soundboards, and is also familiar with our “BOTTOM FINISH (Trial-356)”, “BOTTOM LINE 1978 (Trial-234)”, and “BOTTOM LINE 1978 LATE SHOW (Trial-255)”. . Let’s focus on the “North America” leg here to understand the positional relationship there.
● “North American” leg details
・ November 8-10 (4 performances)
・November 11th “BOTTOM LINE 1978 (Early)”
・November 11 “BOTTOM LINE 1978 LATE SHOW”
・ November 12: New York performance (early)
・November 12 “BOTTOM FINISH”
・ November 13-19 (7 performances)
・November 20th: Cleveland Performance ← This work
・November 21-December 4 (13 performances)
… and it looks like this. All three sound board works were recorded at the famous club “Bottom Line” in late New York, but this work was the next week.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, is a masterpiece digitized from the recently excavated original master reel, and is an excellent sound board that is as good as the bottom line trilogy. It does not have the thick feeling of the bottom line trilogy, but instead the balance of the whole ensemble is beautiful. And above all, the freshness of master reel raising. There is no twist or distortion, and the core and details are fresh. It is a sound board that combines the direct feeling of a direct connection to the mix desk and the well-balanced sense of the ensemble.
A scorching stage different from the bottom line trilogy is depicted with that well-proportioned sound. It opens with the famous song “Shin Kicker”, which seems to be 1978, but it is surprisingly different after that. Let’s organize them by comparing them here.
●Original (10 songs)
・Photo Finish: Shin Kicker/Shadow Play/The Mississippi Sheiks/Cruise On Out (★)
・Others: Do You Read Me/Bought And Sold/Secret Agent/A Million Miles Away/Tattoo’d Lady/I Could’ve Had Religion (★)
●Cover (4 songs)
・Bullfrog Blues (trad) / Messin’ With The Kid (Junior Wells) / I Wonder Who (Muddy Waters) / I Take What I Want (★: Sam & Dave)
* Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard in any of the three soundboard series “BOTTOM FINISH”, “BOTTOM LINE 1978”, and “BOTTOM LINE 1978 LATE SHOW”.
There were 3 songs that I couldn’t listen to in any of the trilogy. Especially “Cruise On Out” is valuable, and Sam & Dave’s “I Take What I Want” is a delicious song that has not been played on subsequent tours. Besides that, “Bought And Sold”, “I Wonder Who”, “Tattoo’d Lady”, “The Mississippi Sheiks” are daily songs. It is a fresh live album even for those who have experienced the bottom line trilogy.
The “PHOTO-FINISH” era, which was loved by hard rock fans while firmly maintaining Rory’s style of blues rock. It is a new name board of Soundboard Rubum that the stage is reproduced in the brain. A gem recommended not only for collectors who have loved the bottom line trilogy, but also for those who first experienced 1978. Please enjoy it to the fullest.
★ Stereo sound board recording of “November 20, 1978 Cleveland Performance”. It is a digitized product from the recently discovered Omoto master reel, and the balance of the entire ensemble is wonderful, and it is compatible with the direct feeling of the mix table direct connection. “Cruise On Out”, “I Could’ve Had Religion” and “I Take What I Want”, which cannot be heard on our masterpiece SBD “BOTTOM FINISH”, “BOTTOM LINE 1978” and “BOTTOM LINE 1978 LATE SHOW” are also delicious new masterpieces.
