As proved by the popular “BOSTON ORPHEUM THEATER 2002”, various theater gigs of the “LICKS” tour are still very popular among enthusiasts. In 2003, the second year, the curtain opened with a short trip to the United States such as the MSG show of “LICKED LIVE IN NYC”, which was released as a live album, and furthermore, Japanese maniacs went to the Budokan, which was an eternal night. The curtain was dropped from the gig at the Enmore Theater in Sydney, but the fact that the opening was “Midnight Rambler” was quite a topic even in real life. On the contrary, the show that opened with the same song until now is only this day. From there, the rare repertoire peculiar to the “LICKS” theater mode was shown in quick succession, making it one of the most popular nights in the 2003 theater gig.
There have been items for such a charming night since that time, and VGP has released “LICKS DOWNUNDER”. There was an equalization that seems to be released in 2003, and the finish was quite high. However, the finish of the same title (hereinafter referred to as the “existing board”) is not bad, and the fact that the depth of the recording highlights the outline of the performance makes it easy to hear even after 20 years. maybe.
In that respect, it seems that the Enmore Theater was fully satisfied with the existing board, but the taper “Waz from Oz” that recorded this gig released the DAT master again to commemorate the 20th anniversary. is. Before this, it was proven that the existing board was skillfully equalized and at the same time, for better or worse, the finish was far from the original sound. What surprises me when I hear the master this time is its warm texture above all. That the original sound was in such a mild state.
Waz from Oz himself testified this time that he gave up the specification of the shotgun microphone that he usually used in consideration of the gig where the audience tends to be crowded, but when he entered the venue, It was an environment where he could use a mic, and he testified that he regretted not choosing a shotgun mic. However, ironically, it was fortunate that the use of equipment different from usual made it possible to record with a unique warm sound quality.
“mjk5510”, which was in charge of remastering the master, further refined its unique listening comfort. Certainly the finish of the already-launched board is not bad, but if you listen to it and compare it, you can clearly feel that the original freshness of the sound source that was in this version has disappeared from the already-launched board. The original sound of this warm master is very attractive.
However, mjk5510 does not accept the fact that the excitement of the surroundings that was prominent in the first half of the gig has cut into the performance, so let’s make sure to delete as much screaming as possible between songs.
For example, the shout “I love you, Mick! … I love Keith!” It has been cut off (musical tone is fine). Furthermore, in “Live With Me”, mjk5510 copy-pasted the riff and buried it against the strange voice that flew around 15 seconds after the performance started. If you listen to these processes, you may feel the illusion of “another master?”
Such an Enmore Theater tends to attract attention only for rare song selections including the opening, but the testimony of Waz from Oz reminded me that Mick at the time had the flu just before his visit to Australia. . Indeed, “Midnight Rambler” has many parts without songs, rather it was a peculiar opening that was created considering the condition of Mick at that time (and Mick malfunction in Australia will be repeated again 11 years later …) .
Thanks to this, Mick continues to sing a number of rare repertoires. The only thing that made me feel sick was “That’s How Strong My Love Is”. It’s impressive to see him shout out with all his might, even though he’s obviously in pain.
Keith, on the other hand, is doing very well, and his own “Slipping Away” has a guitar solo that repeats the riff. And when it comes to “Rock Me Baby” with the addition of AC / DC Angus brothers, whose guest participation will be repeated after this day, Mick’s voice finally blew away his illness. Of course, in addition to the soundboard of this scene that was released at the time, the bonus includes rare local news reports (voices of people who participated from Japan and a little gig soundboard are played). The Enmore Theater, which was one of the popular gigs from that time, showed its original appearance with the recording from the master!

その幕はシドニーでのエンモア・シアターにおけるギグから切って落とされたのですが、オープニングが何と「Midnight Rambler」であったことはリアタイでも相当な話題を呼んだものでした。それどころか現在に至るまで同曲で幕を開けたショーはこの日だけ。そこから『LICKS』シアター・モード特有のレア・レパートリーが矢継ぎ早に披露されたこともあり、2003年シアター・ギグの中でも特に高い人気を誇る一夜となっています。
これほど魅力的な一夜は当時からアイテムが存在し、VGPが『LICKS DOWNUNDER』をリリースしています。そこは2003年のリリースらしいイコライズが施されており、かなり高域に寄った仕上がりが施されていました。しかし同タイトル（以下“既発盤”と称します）の仕上がりは悪くなく、奥行きのある録音から演奏の輪郭を浮き彫りにさせた点では20年が経過した今の耳でも十分に聞きやすく感じられるかもしれません。
その点エンモア・シアターに関しては既発盤で十分に満足できたかと思われますが、このギグを録音したテーパー「Waz from Oz」が20周年を記念してDATマスターを改めて公開してくれたのです。これを前にすると改めて既発盤が巧みなイコライズを施していたと同時に、良くも悪くも原音とはかけ離れた仕上がりであったことが証明されました。今回のマスターを聞いて驚かされるのは、何よりそのウォーミーな質感。原音はこれほどまでにマイルドな状態であったということ。
Waz from Oz本人は観客が密集しがちなギグを配慮し、普段使用していたショットガン・マイクの仕様を諦めて参戦したと今回証言していたのですが、いざ会場に入ってみればそのマイクを使えた環境であり、ショットガン・マイクにしなかったことを後悔したと証言しています。ところが皮肉なことに、いつもと違う機材を使用したことがかえって独特のウォーミーな音質で録音を可能としたのは不幸中の幸いでした。
そのマスターの公開に際してリマスターを担当した「mjk5510」によってさらに独特な聞き心地のよさが磨き上げられました。確かに既発盤の仕上がりも悪くないのですが、聞き比べてみると今回のバージョンにあった音源本来の鮮度が既発盤から消え失せていたことがはっきり感じられるかと。このウォーミーなマスター本来の音が非常に魅力的。
ただしmjk5510はギグ前半において顕著だった周囲の盛り上がりが演奏にも食い込んでしまった状態を善しとせず、曲間どころか演奏中の叫びまで可能な限り削除するという念の入れよう。
例えば「Tumbling Dice」が始まる際に飛んだ「I love you, Mick!…I love Keith!」という叫び声に関してはイントロに食い込んだ部分をカットしており、結果として「Keith!」の個所が切り落とされています（楽音は問題無し）。さらに「Live With Me」では演奏が始まって15秒あたりで飛び交う奇声に対しmjk5510はリフをコピペして葬り去っています。これらの処理によって一聴すると「別マスター？」と錯覚しそうなほどですが、何よりギグ特有の騒がしさが苦手な向きにこの処理は吉と出ることかと。
そんなエンモア・シアターはオープニングを始めとしたレアな選曲ばかりに注目が集まりがちですが、Waz from Ozの証言によって当時のミックがオーストラリア訪問直前でインフルエンザにかかってしまったことを思い出させてくれました。なるほど「Midnight Rambler」は歌がないパートも多く、むしろ当時のミックのコンディションを配慮して生み出された特異なオープニングであったのでした（そしてオーストラリアでのミック不調は11年後に再び繰り返される…）。
この甲斐あってミックはレア・レパートリーの数々を快調に歌い継いでくれます。唯一、病みあがりな様子を感じさせたのは「That’s How Strong My Love Is」。明らかに苦しそうになりながら、それでもなお懸命にシャウトしてくれる姿は感動的
一方キースは非常に好調で、自身の「Slipping Away」ではこれでもかとリフを繰り返すギターソロを決めています。そしてこの日を境にゲスト参加が繰り返されることになるAC/DCアンガス兄弟の加わった「Rock Me Baby」になるとミックの声はいよいよ病み上がりを吹き飛ばした熱唱ぶり。もちろんボーナスには当時公開されたこの場面のサウンドボードに加え、さらにレアな地元でのニュース・レポート（日本から参戦した人物の声や少しだけギグのサウンドボードが流れされる）まで収録。当時から人気ギグの一つだったエンモア・シアターがマスターからの収録で本来の姿を現してくれました！
