ローリング・ストーンズ今回のツアーの音源が思いのほか出回らないのは、やはりコロナ禍によってアメリカ以外の海外組の参戦が困難になっている、特にヨーロッパ方面のテーパーが渡航できないことが大きな要因の一つだと思われます。さらにスマホの時代であり、誰もが録音より撮影に熱心であるということも挙げられるでしょう。それは今回のツアーでも圧倒的にSNS上に出回る動画の量と速さが証明しています。
よってツアー初日の限定プレスCD「ST. LOUIS 2021」がリリースされてからというもの、続く公演のリリースが登場せずやきもきされていた方が多かったのではないでしょうか。それも先のような事情があったからだと思われてなりません。
そこで先週ギフトCD-Rという形でリリースしたのがツアー四日目のナッシュビル。これがまた現状を反映したかのような音源でして、SNS上にマニアが客席からライブ配信してくれた音声をリッピングしたというもの。よってフツーのオーディエンス録音とは違う性質のものでした。音質そのものは音像も近く、それでいて聞きやすい質感ではあったのですが、いかんせんライブ配信ということから音のエッジがシュワシュワするという違和感があった。
それだけならまだしも、近くの観客の笑い声が相当な存在感で入っており、とどめは配信している最中にスマホに入れられていたアプリが作動してしまい、二回もアプリの起動音が演奏に混入されてしまうという始末。これもまたテーパーでない観客が撮影したが故の弊害と呼べるのでは。
それでも最新公演が聞かれる、さらに「Connection」が聞かれるといった大きなトピックを含んでいたことから大人気の無料ギフト・アイテムと化したのですが、そのギフトが発表される日の朝、大手トレント・サイトにようやく上質なナッシュビルのオーディエンス録音が現れてくれました。
今回の音源ですが、迫力たっぷりな音像の近さを始めとして、音質は実に素晴らしいものがある。セントルイスも良好な音質でしたが、今回の音源はそれをも上回るクオリティ。現時点では今回のツアーにおいてはベストだと断言してしまっていいと思います。もちろん先の無料ギフトに使われたライブ配信の音声とは比較にならない。
既に大きな話題となっていますが、ツアーにスティーブ・ジョーダンが参加したということからキース・コーナーで「Connection」を取り上げようという思い付き、これは名案すぎるのでは。何しろスティーブはエクスペンシブ・ワイノーズ時代にこの曲をキースのバックで毎晩叩いていたのだから、彼からすれば昔取った杵柄を地で行くレパートリー。それだけに他のストーンズ・レパートリーにある「手探り感」が一切なく、自信を持って叩いている様子が音質のおかげもあってはっきり伝わってくる。これは今後も演奏してもらいたいもの。
その「手探り感」と言えば「Midnight Rambler」まだ演奏の中間で昇り詰めるような展開にはならないのですが、それでもセントルイスに比べるとだいぶスリリングな展開を見せており、これもまた今後が楽しみです。
ちなみに本曲の演奏中、テーパーの前をセキュリティが通ったようで、彼のトランシーバーから発せられる音が右から左に流れてゆく様子にはびっくり。ヘッドフォンで聞きこむ際には気を付けてください。
そしてセントルイスでも大きな話題を呼んだ「19th Nervous Breakdown」、さらには「Let’s Spend the Night Together」といったブライアン期レパートリーは文字通り息を吹き返したの如く勢いに溢れた素晴らしい演奏が聞かれる。音質が非常に良いのでダリル・ジョーンズのベースの音までしっかり捉えてくれているのですが、特に「19th Nervous～」では彼もこれまでになくビル・ワイマンをリスペクトしたベースをプレイしている様子が伝わってきて新鮮。もしかしたらスティーブと二人で打ち合わせしたのでしょうか。
こうして勢いのあるリズム隊の演奏に煽られ、三人のストーンの演奏も勢いが感じられる。チャーリーがいなくなってしまったことによって、彼らの間にも懸命に演奏している様子が感じられるのは今回の高音質な音源だからこそ！
