Roger Waters’ latest tour “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” has finally begun. The live album on the first day, when the whole picture was released for the first time, arrived. It is an urgent release decision.
It is “July 6, 2022 Pittsburgh performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is the best audience recording that vacuum packed the whole story. Initially, “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” was planned to be implemented in 2020, but it was postponed significantly due to the new Korona-ka. It was finally realized in 2022. This work is the first report. First, let’s check the overall picture of “THIS IS NOT A DRILL”.

This is the “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” schedule that has been announced so far. There is no leg division in all North America (Canada, USA, Mexico). I’ll avoid affirming the upcoming dates, but Roger says, “I can’t and don’t want to go around the world.” On the other hand, Roger also called “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” the “first farewell tour”, and the content was drawing attention from all over the world. The Pittsburgh performance of this work was the first day of such a tour, and it was the first time that it was open to the public following the dress rehearsal.
This work, which conveys such a world premiere, is the first report and suddenly has superb quality. Audience recordings of the highest peak in the scene were repeated in “US + THEM”, but this work goes even higher! In terms of tone, the sound of the hall and the feeling of an audience that sucked in were felt, while the direct feeling of the on-core was definitely soundboard grade. While the sound creates thickness and dynamism, the core is not as squishy as it is, but it is powerful enough to break through the thick sound.
Moreover, what is surprising is that the feeling of separation is strong. Hall sounds usually balance each instrument together, but at the expense of detail and separation. However, despite the fact that this work has a thick sound, the core that dances in it has a clear outline of one instrument, one instrument, and one sound, and does not mix. Mine is proud of the luster unique to the audience, but also has the vividness and power that is far from the audience. Even one string sound is so beautiful that you can tighten your chest, and you will be intoxicated by the three-dimensional effect of various musical instruments. It perfectly reproduces the Roger-style spatial sound that flies from the vast venue.
The whole picture of “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” that the world watched with a sigh of breath was drawn with such a beautiful sound. Let’s sort out the contents at once.

…… And it looks like this. Several songs are played in chunks for each album, and the above songs are in the same order as the actual songs. While arranging “THE WALL” numbers at key points, Floyd’s classics and solo songs are arranged in section units. In the second part, the B side of “Insanity” is also reproduced.
And even if you look at each song, there are plenty of rare songs. “Have A Cigar” and “Run Like Hell” that I didn’t play in “US + THEM” are just the beginning, and if “Any Color You Like” is the first time in 14 years, “Outside The Wall” is the first time in 19 years, “Shine On You Crazy” “Diamond (parts VI-IX)” is the first time in 20 years, and “The Powers That Be” in “RADIO K.A.O.S.” is also the first time in 23 years.
Under such circumstances, the best ones would be “Two Suns In The Sunset” from “Final Cut” and the new songs “The Bar” and “The Bar (reprise)”. It is natural that the new song will be released for the first time, but “THIS IS NOT A DRILL” is the first time that “Two Suns In The Sunset” is included in the regular set.
It is the first report of a marvelous tour where you can enjoy the B-side reproduction of “Insanity” and many rare songs with the best sound. To tell the truth, from this work, you will be surprised at the many super spectacle productions, and even the screaming of the surprised audience will flow out with the best sound. I’m dying to see the video, but first of all, the sound. It’s a full-live album that fills my heart with the wonderful performances and sets, and I can’t wait for future reports. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2022年７月６日ピッツバーグ公演」。その一部始終を真空パックした極上オーディエンス録音です。当初、”THIS IS NOT A DRILL”は2020年に実施される計画でしたが、新型コロナ禍によって大幅に延期。2022年になってようやく実現にこぎつけました。本作は、その第一報。まずは、”THIS IS NOT A DRILL”の全体像から確認してみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている”THIS IS NOT A DRILL”のスケジュール。すべて北米（カナダ・米国・メキシコ）でレッグ分けはなし。今後の追加日程について断言は避けますが、ロジャーは「世界中を回ることはできないし、そうしたいとも思わない」と語っています。その一方、ロジャーは”THIS IS NOT A DRILL”を「最初のお別れツアー（first farewell tour）」とも呼んでおり、その内容に世界中から注目が注がれていました。本作のピッツバーグ公演は、そんなツアーの初日であり、ドレス・リハーサルに続いて初めて一般公開された現場なのです。
そんなワールド・プレミアを伝える本作は、第一報にしていきなりの超極上クオリティ。“US + THEM”でもシーン最高峰のオーディエンス録音が連発されましたが、本作はさらに上を行く！　音色的にはホール鳴りも吸い込んだオーディエンスらしさも感じさせつつ、オンな芯のダイレクト感は確実にサウンドボード級。鳴りが厚みやダイナミズムを演出する一方で、芯にスカスカ感がまるでなく厚めの鳴りを食い破るように力強いのです。
しかも、驚きなのはセパレート感まで強烈なこと。普通、ホール鳴りは各楽器をひとまとめにしてバランスを整える一方で、ディテールや分離感は犠牲になるものです。しかし、本作は鳴りが厚いにも関わらず、その中で乱舞する芯は１楽器１楽器、１音１音の輪郭がクッキリとしていて混じり合わない。オーディエンスならではの艶やかさを誇りつつ、客録離れした鮮やかさと力強さを併せ持った美音。ストリングスの音１つでも胸が締め付けられるほど美しく、多彩な楽器が織りなす立体感に酔いしれる。広大な会場のアチコチから乱れ飛ぶロジャー流の空間サウンドをものの見事に再現してくれるのです。

……と、このようになっています。アルバム毎に数曲ずつ塊で演奏されており、上記は曲順も本番通りです。『THE WALL』ナンバーを要所に配置しつつ、フロイドのクラシックスとソロ曲をセクション単位で配置。第二部では『狂気』のＢ面再現もしています。
そして、曲ごとに見てもレア曲がたっぷり。“US + THEM”では演奏しなかった「Have A Cigar」「Run Like Hell」は序の口で、「Any Colour You Like」が14年ぶりなら「Outside The Wall」は19年ぶり、「Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts VI-IX)」は20年ぶり、『RADIO K.A.O.S.』の「The Powers That Be」も23年ぶりと、意表を突く復活曲が散りばめられています。
そんな中で極めつけなのが『ファイナル・カット』の「Two Suns In The Sunset」と新曲「The Bar」「The Bar (reprise)」でしょう。新曲が初公開なのはある意味当然でもありますが、「Two Suns In The Sunset」がレギュラーセット入りするのも”THIS IS NOT A DRILL”が初めての事です。
