“This Is Not A Drill” has become a large-scale world tour with additional dates announced one after another. Two of the latest live albums will be released simultaneously. It is the appearance of two series full of special feeling different from the past.
This work is the first of such two consecutive releases. It is the best audience recording of “Denver performance on September 6, 2022”. We have been reporting on the live album since the beginning of “This Is Not A Drill”, and the recently released “KANSAS CITY 2022 (Amity 695)” was also very well received. What kind of position will this work take in such a situation? First of all, let’s organize the latest tour information.

This is the overall picture of “This Is Not A Drill” that has been published to date. At the time of the last release of “KANSAS CITY 2022”, the schedule for next year was about 12 performances, but after that, they were added one after another. Currently, the number has reached 30 performances, and it is clear that it will be a large-scale tour approaching the North American leg. Under such circumstances, the Denver performance of this work is the 26th performance of the North American leg. It was the “next” concert of “KANSAS CITY 2022”.
Originally, it may be better to wait a little while, but this work is a noteworthy work that cannot be said that way. First of all, the date is special. This show was held on the day of Roger’s 79th birthday. And the sound that conveys the birthday show is also wonderful. The previous work “KANSAS CITY 2022” was a famous recording that boasts strange clarity, but this work has a slightly different personality and a rich sound that produces dynamism with a thicker sound.
If you write it like this, you might imagine a boisterous sound, but that’s not the case. Certainly the hall sounding component is thick, but the core is thicker than that. The core like that rough rope rushes to break through the ringing. Therefore, the sense of distance is not born, and the thick sound is converted into dynamism as it is. Although it is certain that it will yield to “KANSAS CITY 2022” in terms of the transparency of the air, the strength as rock and the dynamism that puts itself in the great spectacle of the century are the winners of this work.
“What’s even more wonderful is that the loud cheers are far away.” In “KANSAS CITY 2022”, the surrounding enthusiasm and chorus were clearly captured as well as the sound of the band’s performance, but this work seems to have been the type where the surroundings listened properly. Of course, there will be a lot of excitement between songs, and a big chorus will occur for hit songs. However, since it is perceived as “the swell of the entire venue” rather than as a close guest, only the spectacle can be tasted deliciously without disturbing the performance.
With such dynamism and spectacular sound, the world of “This Is Not A Drill”, which has been perfected over many occasions, is depicted. The set is the same as before, but let’s summarize it for the last time.

Roger Waters turned 79 on this day. There are no plans for a show on September 6th next year (so far), and above all Roger himself has said that “This Is Not A Drill” may be the last tour. There seems to be no show celebrating 80 years old … No, there may be no more birthday concerts. A branded live album that can be present with the best sound on such a memorial night. Please enjoy it slowly and thoroughly.

これが現在までに公表されている“This Is Not A Drill”の全体像。前回『KANSAS CITY 2022』のリリース時には来年の予定が12公演ほどだったのですが、その後になって次々と追加。現在その数は30公演にも及び、北米レッグにも迫る大規模なツアーとなる事がハッキリとしました。そんな中で本作のデンバー公演は北米レッグの26公演目。『KANSAS CITY 2022』の「次」にあたるコンサートでした。
本来であれば少々間を置いた方が良いのかも知れませんが、本作はそうも言っていられない注目作。まず何より、日付が特別。このショウが行われたのは、ロジャー79歳の誕生日当日でした。そして、そのバースデー・ショウを伝えるサウンドも素晴らしい。前作『KANSAS CITY 2022』は異様なクリアさを誇る名録音でしたが、本作は個性がちょっと異なり、厚めの鳴りがダイナミズムを演出するリッチ・サウンドなのです。
こう書くと鳴りでボワボワなサウンドをイメージされるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。確かにホール鳴り成分も厚めではありますが、それ以上に芯が極太。その荒縄の如き芯が鳴りを突き破るように突進してくるのです。そのため、スカスカ感も距離感が生まれず、厚めの鳴りがそのままダイナミズムに転化されている。空気の透明感では『KANSAS CITY 2022』に譲るのも確かではありますが、ロックとしての力強さ、世紀の一大スペクタクルに身を置くダイナミズムは本作に軍配が上がるのです。
さらに素晴らしいのは、大歓声が遠い事。『KANSAS CITY 2022』は周囲の熱狂や合唱もバンドの演奏音に負けないくらいクリアに捉えられていましたが、本作は周囲がちゃんと聴き込むタイプだったようです。もちろん曲間には盛大に盛り上がりますし、ヒット曲には大合唱も起きます。しかし、それが間近客ではなく「会場全体のうねり」として捉えられているため、演奏を邪魔せずにスペクタクルだけが美味しく味わえるのです。
そんなダイナミズム＆スペクタクル・サウンドで描かれるのは、場数を重ねて完成度を高めた“This Is Not A Drill”の世界。セットはこれまでと共通ではありますが、最後の一応まとめておきましょう。
