Richard Thompson in 2022, 55 years after the formation of FAIRPORT CONVENTION and celebrated the 50th anniversary of his solo debut. Introducing the latest live album where you can fully experience the stage.

If you listen carefully with headphones, you can see that it is an audience recording that sucks in the sound of the hall, but that is not a drawback but a beauty. Basically, it is a style in which guests participate in Richard’s solo narration, and it is an extremely simple ensemble. A slight sound wraps around the simple core, giving it thickness and dynamism. Of course, it doesn’t have any origin or child to hide or cloud the details, but the powerful core makes the clear outline stand out in the sound.
The key to this sound may be the venue. “Freight and Salvage”, which became the site, is a non-profit venue for the purpose of preserving traditional music, and is a club scale of about 500 people. The narrowness creates a strong direct feeling, and the sound of the acoustic guitar is beautifully depicted by the acoustic design based on traditional music. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2022年２月23日バークレー公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。リチャードは新型コロナ禍にあっても毎年ライヴを欠かさなかった数少ないミュージシャンの１人であり、シーンが立ち直ろうとしている2022年はさらに活発化しています。まずは、そんな彼の近況からチェックしてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年のスケジュール。更なる変異株の登場やウクライナ侵攻の行方によってはどうなるか分かりませんが、現時点では2020年／2021年を超える公演が予定されています。本作のバークレー公演は、その序盤。「北米」ツアーの９公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、超リアル＆極上。極太の芯は距離感なく密度も濃厚で、アコギの低音弦をつま弾くだけでズンズンと迫力たっぷり。しかも、その機微まで繊細で巻き弦が振動しているのまで感じられるほどです。もちろん低音が飛び出した録音という意味ではなく、中高音の伸びも素晴らしければ、決してビビらない艶やかさも驚異的です。ただ、空間を介したオーディエンス録音では低音の解像度はどうしても鈍くなりがちですし、繊細なアコギでは細くなって当然。本作は、そんな常識まで真っ向から覆してしまうほどのサウンドなのです。
しかも、猛烈に美しい。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませるとホール鳴りを吸い込んだオーディエンス録音なのも分かるのですが、それは欠点ではなく美点。基本的にはリチャード独りの弾き語りにゲストが参加するスタイルでして、極めてシンプルなアンサンブル。その素朴な芯をほんのりとした鳴りが包み込み、厚みとダイナミズムを与えている。もちろん、それによってディテールが隠れたり曇ったりしては元も子もありませんが、強力な芯によって鳴りの中にクッキリとした輪郭が際立つのです。
このサウンドの要となっているのは、会場かも知れません。現場となった“Freight and Salvage”は伝統音楽の保全を目的とした非営利会場でして、約500人のクラブ規模。その狭さが強力なダイレクト感を生み、伝統音楽を基準とした音響設計によってアコギの鳴りを美しく描き出している。そうした要因が総て噛み合い、オフィシャル作品やサウンドボードではあり得ない「オーディエンスならではの美」をたっぷりと味わわせてくれるのです。
