It is “April 3, 1974 Rothrin performance” that is sealed in such a work. It is the best soundboard recording recorded at the late famous venue “My Father’s Place”. Speaking of 1974, the masterpiece sound board “ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974”, which was also formalized, is also memorable, but what is the positional relationship with this work? It is a little dangerous to declare that this is 1974 RENAISSANCE ……. In their case, there are many vague points in the records at that time, and some materials may be inconsistent. The above schedule was also put together with some speculation, “Maybe it was like this” while integrating some materials. Please do not trust the detailed figures such as the number of performances, and refer only to the rough flow. Anyway, it seems that RENAISSANCE in 1974 had been on his second North American tour since joining Annie Haslam. “ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974” was a show before and after the release of the album, but the Rothrin performance of this work was a concert one and a half months before that. In addition, at the famous venue “My Father’s Place”, a large-scale show of 5 consecutive performances (including materials with 4 performances) was organized, and this work was also the first day.
It is also known that such a show was broadcast on the radio, and its air check has become a standard. This work is also the same FM sound board, but it is a new master that updates the highest peak. It was recently announced by an overseas core enthusiast, but the point is precise mastering. It seems that it uses the youngest gene currently known, but the accuracy of polishing is not hampered either. Originally it was an air check that was mono-recorded on a stereo cassette, but we decided on a slightly different storage situation for the left and right channels and adopted the better one. It removes hum and harmonics, stabilizes the pitch, adjusts the balance by range analysis, corrects volume fluctuations, removes clicks, patches with slight chips below zero comma, repairs wah and flutter, and so on. The number of work items and the accuracy of each one are strange. The content is comparable to the “GRAF ZEPPELIN” mastering that we often introduce in our shop.
If you read this far, you may be wondering, “Is the original tattered?”, But that is not the case. Rather the opposite. The more you want to polish it, the more wonderful it is. It is a detailed mastering because it tickles the enthusiast’s heart, saying, “If it’s so amazing, I want to make it the ultimate form.” In fact, the final form of this work is beautifully arranged but extremely natural. Although there is some fluctuation in the mix due to the original broadcast, the sound quality is not defeated by the official version “ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974”. On the contrary, the natural feeling is superior to this work. Annie’s singing voice and John Tout’s live piano are as real as if they were playing in their heads.
The show with such a natural beauty sound is different from “ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974”. Let’s organize the set while comparing here.

I don’t think that the performance time of about 1 hour is a full show because of the broadcasting frame, but among them, the two major boards “PROLOGUE” and “ASHES ARE BURNING” are concentrated and reduced. In addition to “Let It Grow” and “Kiev”, you can enjoy the early “Things I Do n’t Understand” which has not been released yet with the best sound.
A unique symphonic rock woven by Annie Haslam’s live voice, classical tunes and feeky ensembles that are too beautiful. マイケル・ダンフォードを正式メンバーに迎え、歴史的な大名盤を連発していた1974年のRENAISSANCE。その生演奏を脳みそに直接流し込んでくれるサウンドボード・アルバムが登場です。
そんな本作に封じられているのは「1974年４月３日ロスリン公演」。今は亡き名会場“マイ・ファーザーズ・プレイス”で記録された極上サウンドボード録音です。1974年と言えば、公式化も果たした名作サウンドボード『ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974』も思い出深いわけですが、本作との位置関係はどうなっているのでしょうか。当時のスケジュールを紐解き、それぞれのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1974年のRENAISSANCE……と、断言するのは少々危険。彼らの場合、当時の記録にはあやふやな点も多く、資料によっては矛盾していることもある。上記のスケジュールも幾つかの資料を総合しつつ「多分こうだったんじゃないか」と推測混じりに組み上げられたもの。公演数などの細かい数値は信用せず、ざっくりとした流れだけで参考にしてください。ともあれ、1974年のRENAISSANCEはアニー・ハズラム加入後、二度目となる北米ツアーに終始していた模様。『ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974』はアルバムの発売前後のショウでしたが、本作のロスリン公演はその１ヶ月半前のコンサートでした。また、名会場“マイ・ファーザーズ・プレイス”では５連続公演（４公演との資料もあり）という大規模なショウが組まれ、本作はその初日でもありました。
そんなショウはラジオ放送された事でも知られ、そのエアチェックが定番にもなってきました。本作もまた同じFMサウンドボードでありつつ、その最高峰を更新する新マスターなのです。最近になって海外のコア・マニアが発表したものなのですが、そのポイントは精密なマスタリング。現在知られている最も若いジェネを使っているそうですが、磨き込みの精度もハンパではない。元々はステレオ・カセットにモノ録音されたエアチェックなのですが、左右のチャンネルで微妙に異なる保存状況を見極め、より良い方を採用。それをハム音やハーモニクスの除去、ピッチの安定化、音域分析によるバランス調整、音量揺れの補正、クリックの除去、ゼロコンマ以下のわずかな欠けのパッチ、ワウ＆フラッターの補修等々など。その作業項目の多さと１つひとつの正確さが異様。当店でよくご紹介する「GRAF ZEPPELIN」マスタリングにも匹敵する内容なのです。
ここまでお読みになって「元がボロボロなのか？」と思われるかも知れませんが、そうではありません。むしろ逆。ここまで磨き込みたくなるほど、元が素晴らしい。「ここまで凄いなら、究極形にしてみたい」とマニア心をくすぐってくるからこその細密マスタリングなのです。実際、最終形の本作は美しく整っていながら極めて自然でもある。オリジナル放送に起因するミックスの揺れはありますが、音質的には公式盤『ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974』にも負けていない。それどころか、ナチュラル感は本作の方が勝っているくらい。アニーの歌声やジョン・タウトの生ピアノに至っては、頭の中で演奏しているかのようなリアリティなのです。
そんなナチュラル・ビューティなサウンドで描かれるのは、『ACADEMY OF MUSIC 1974』とも異なるショウ。ここで比較しつつセットを整理しておきましょう。

美しすぎるアニー・ハズラムの生声、クラシカルな旋律とフィーキーなアンサンブルが織りなす独特なシンフォニック・ロック。そのすべてが脳みそに直接流し込まれるサウンドボード・アルバムの大傑作です。コアなマニアが丹精込めて磨き上げた極みの美音。どうぞ、この機会に思う存分酔いしれてください。
