1977 RAINBOW welcomed David Stone and Bob Daisley and was pursuing the ideal form of style HR. The legendary recording that has conveyed its true nature will be reprinted with a press 2CD with renewed artwork.
What is engraved on this work is “London performance on November 14, 1977.” This is a powerful audience recording recorded at the famous venue “Rainbow Theater”. We report on Ritchie Blackmore’s entire career with as many famous recordings as possible, and in particular, we have carefully archived RAINBOW from the Ronnie James Dio era. This is also a good opportunity to take a look at the history of Stone & Daisley, including representative works from each leg.

This is RAINBOW in 1977/1978. Despite suffering from member changes, they produced the famous album “Babylon’s Castle Gate” and resumed touring activities. The London performance of this work was at the beginning of such a tour, and it was an act of the “European” leg while the album was being produced. This “Europe” is most famous for its professional shot of the Munich performance, but it is actually also known as a tour that shows the true power of the Stone/Daisley era. During the 1978 Japan performance, a tragic accident occurred while they were getting better, and the following US tour was a short set for the opening act. It was in the “European” leg that he reached full strength after playing long sets and playing a sufficient number of matches. Of course, since it is only a tour, there are many masterpieces. …and it looks like this. Roughly speaking, the flow is continental → British, and this work is of course the latter. It was also about a month after the Munich performance pro shot. By the way, RAINBOW performed a total of 7 shows at the Rainbow Theater, once during the “DOWN TO EARTH” era and twice during the “DIFFICULT TO CURE” era. The Ronnie era was a four-night continuous performance in 1977, and this work was also the last day.
This vacuum-packed recording of such a scene is a masterpiece recording from 1977. The ensemble that has been thoroughly mastered in the 35th performance of the “European” leg is exploding, and the sound that conveys its true nature is also exquisite. What’s most amazing is the powerful feeling of power. Although it is in the category of a vintage audience, the performance that approaches forward is very powerful, and the rushing force brings out the details. During the quiet parts, the sound of the hall amplifies the luster of the guitar and gives the vocals a relaxed feel, but once the band comes in, things go straight. Due to the sense of balance that combines hardness and softness, it is difficult to imagine the recording position…It is also a sound with a mysterious feeling.
The set is the same as the famous Munich Pro Shot, so I will omit it, but this sound source is recorded on a 90-minute tape, and 1/2 of the discs are about 45 and a half minutes each. There was a tape change during the guitar solo in the second half of “Catch The Rainbow”, and the recording ended with the ending of “Still I’m Sad”, and it is not known whether the encore “Do You Close Your Eyes” was played. . Unfortunately, there are no separate recordings, so the complete form of the show has not yet been realized, but even with that in mind, it is a great recording packed with sounds and performances that can’t be saved forever.
In the latter half of the Three-Head era, they added David Stone, who had a progressive sense, and Bob Daisley, who was a vocal bassist, and expected to make further progress. This is a valuable live album where you can enjoy the true essence of it on the spot. これが1977年／1978年のRAINBOW。メンバーチェンジに苦しみながらも大名盤『バビロンの城門』を制作しつつ、ツアー活動も再開。本作のロンドン公演はそんなツアー序盤で、アルバム制作中でもあった「欧州」レッグの一幕でした。この「欧州」は何よりもミュンヘン公演プロショットが有名なわけですが、実はストーン／デイズリー時代の本領発揮のツアーとしても知られている。1978年の日本公演は調子を上げていく最中で悲劇的な事故に見舞われてしまい、続く全米ツアーは前座のためにショートセット。長尺セットかつ十分な場数を踏んで全力運転に到達したのは「欧州」レッグだったのです。もちろん、それだけのツアーですから名作は数多い。ここで日程をさらにフォーカスして当店コレクションを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ざっくり大陸→英国の流れであり、本作はもちろん後者。ミュンヘン公演プロショットの約１ヶ月後でもありました。ちなみにRAINBOWが“レインボー・シアター”で行ったライヴは全７回で、『DOWN TO EARTH』時代に１回、『DIFFICULT TO CURE』時代に２回。ロニー時代は1977年の４夜連続公演であり、本作はその最終日でもありました。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は、1977年を代表する名録音。「欧州」レッグ35公演目でじっくりとこなれたアンサンブルが炸裂しているわけですが、その本領を伝えるサウンドも絶品。何よりも素晴らしいのは、オンで力強いパワー感。あくまでヴィンテージ・オーディエンスの範疇ではあるものの、前へ前へとグイグイ迫ってくる演奏がド迫力で、その突進力がディテールまで連れてくる感じ。静かなパートではホール鳴りがギターの艶を増幅させ、ヴォーカルの伸びやかさも演出してくれるのですが、バンドが入ってくるや剛球一直線。硬軟を併せ持ったバランス感覚のために録音ポジションが今ひとつ想像できない……そんな不思議感覚のサウンドでもあるのです。
セットは有名すぎるミュンヘン・プロショットと同一なので省略しますが、この音源は90分テープで録音されておりディスク１／２がそれぞれ約45分半の収録。「Catch The Rainbow」後半のギターソロでテープチェンジがあり、「Still I’m Sad」のエンディングで録音が終了しており、アンコールの「Do You Close Your Eyes」が演奏されたかどうかも分かっていません。残念ながら別録音も存在しないために未だショウの完全形は実現していないわけですが、それを差し引いても永久保存せずにはいられないサウンドと演奏が詰まっている名録音なのです。
プログレッシヴなセンスのデヴィッド・ストーンと、歌心ベースのボブ・デイズリーを加入させ、更なる飛躍を期した三頭時代の後期。その本領を現場で味わえる貴重なライヴアルバムです。ミュンヘンの公式プロショットで満足してしまっている方にこそ触れていただきたい本生100％オーディエンスによる体験感。どうぞ、永久保存プレス２CDで存分にご堪能ください。
