QUIET RIOT’s 2nd album “Riot has no tomorrow” released only in Japan following the debut album. The hidden masterpiece of the young Randy Rhoad, who has been evolving day by day

“There is no tomorrow in the riots” …… Since QUIET RIOT was disbanded once at the end of this album, it is a nostalgic one that was ridiculed as “Tomorrow is really gone”. The debut work “Quiet Riot” was released in March 1978, but there is no tour because it was limited to Japan. They continued to perform in clubs and entered the studio in June-September 1978, producing their 2nd album with Lee Decaro as a producer in addition to the same Warren Entner as the previous work.
The completed “Riot has no tomorrow” was released only in Japan, but a member change broke out before and after the album was completed in the field beyond the sea. Original member Kelly Garni has left and Rudy Sarzo has joined. The process was firmly preserved in the released album. First, the bassist’s credit. It was Kelly who was playing on the album, but it was Rudy who was credited to the album and the photo was posted. We didn’t know such a situation, and we heard it thinking that it was the base of a newcomer named Rudy. In addition, the artwork for the jacket. This is a group shot taken in the American football locker room, but if you look closely, you can see the QUIET RIOT leaflet made in Japan on the inside of the locker door. This leaflet uses photographs from the Kelly era, but the face is marked with an “x” (unfortunately the CD size is a bit invisible …).
Is it playful or mean? Wrapped in artwork that seems to be a minor band, this work is a fine work that clearly shows the traces of progress while following the debut work “Quiet Riot”. It can be felt in all aspects of songwriting, sound, performance. First of all, from the start, the famous song “Slick Black Cadillac”, which is also remade with “Metal Health”, pops out. Of course, it is different to say that the performance and arrangement are different, but the original version of this work is also highly complete. We have also established a thick chorus that will become the signboard of QUIET RIOT later. Starting with that “Slick Black Cadillac”, the number of 5-minute songs such as “Trouble”, “Killer Girls”, and “Inside You” has increased. They are not the type of band that stretches with jam, and this lengthening is a manifestation of improved arranging power in song composition. In fact, in the previous work, it was like making “one song with one idea”, but you can see that this work is “one song from many ideas” (promised cover song). Is SMALL FACES’s “Afterglow (Of Your Love)”).
And performance. Kevin DuBrow’s vocals are already close to “Metal Health”, and Randy’s guitar is definitely evolving. It’s not yet a classical beauty melody like in the Ozzy era, but you can feel the compositional power of each phrase rather than the debut work that was left to the momentum, and the sound is thick. The sense of arrangement for inserting thick overdubs and acoustic guitars at key points has also improved dramatically.
The 2nd album “Riot has no tomorrow” which became more professional from “Quiet riot” which was poor at the starting point. Of course, you can’t see the world of “BLIZZARD OF OZZ”, but the road to “Metal Health” is clearly shown. Randy in his later years also talked about his feelings for QUIET RIOT, but if he unexpectedly separated from Ozzy, he might have made an album like the sequel to this work.
Anyway, not only “Trouble” and “Killer Girls” that you heard in “THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS”, but also the original version that you can fully enjoy all 9 songs. Please take this opportunity to thoroughly enjoy it.
デビュー作に続いて日本でのみリリースされたQUIET RIOTの2ndアルバム『暴動に明日はない』。日進月歩で進化していた若きランディ・ローズの隠れた名作がギフト・リリース決定です。
『暴動に明日はない』……このアルバムを最後にQUIET RIOTは一度解散してしまうため、「本当に明日がなくなっちゃったね」と揶揄されたのも懐かしい１枚です。デビュー作『静かなる暴動』がリリースされたのは1978年３月でしたが、日本限定だったためにツアーはなし。彼らは相変わらずクラブ出演を重ねつつ、1978年６月-９月にスタジオ入りし、前作と同じウォーレン・エントナーに加えてリー・デカーロをプロデューサーに迎えて2ndアルバムを制作しました。
そうして完成した『暴動に明日はない』も日本だけでリリースされたわけですが、海を越えた現地ではアルバム完成と前後してメンバーチェンジが勃発。オリジナル・メンバーのケリー・ガルニが脱退し、ルディ・サーゾが加入しました。その経緯は、発売されたアルバムにもしっかりと残された。まず、ベーシストのクレジット。アルバムで弾いていたのはケリーだったのですが、アルバムにクレジットされ、写真が掲載されたのはルディ。そんな事情を知らない私たちは「ルディなる新人のベース」と思いながら聞いたものでした。さらに、言いますとジャケットのアートワーク。アメフトのロッカールームで撮影されたグループショットなのですが、よくよく見るとロッカーの扉の内側には日本で作られたQUIET RIOTのチラシが貼ってある。このチラシにはケリー時代の写真が使われているわけですが、その顔には「×」印が書かれている（残念ながらCDサイズはちょっと見えない……）のです。
遊び心なのか、意地なのか。何ともマイナーバンドらしいアートワークに包まれた本作は、デビュー作『静かなる暴動』に準じながらも、進歩の跡もしっかりと見える佳作。それは曲づくり、サウンド、演奏……すべての面で感じられる。まず曲ですが、スタートからして『メタル・ヘルス』でリメイクもされる名曲「Slick Black Cadillac」が飛び出す。もちろん、演奏もアレンジも違うと言えば違うのですが、本作のオリジナル・バージョンも完成度が高い。後のQUIET RIOTの看板となるぶ厚いコーラスも確立しています。その「Slick Black Cadillac」を筆頭に、「Trouble」「Killer Girls」「Inside You」など５分尺の曲が増量。彼らはジャムで伸張させるタイプのバンドでもなく、この長尺化は曲構成のアレンジ力が向上した現れ。実際、前作では「１つのアイディアで１つの曲」を作っている感じだったのに対し、本作は「幾つものアイディアから１つの曲」にしているのがよく分かります（お約束のカバー曲はSMALL FACESの「Afterglow (Of Your Love)」です）。
そして、演奏。ケヴィン・ダブロウのヴォーカルはすでに『メタル・ヘルス』に迫る発声ですし、ランディのギターも確実に進化している。まだオジー時代のようなクラシカル美旋律とまではいきませんが、勢い任せだったデビュー作よりもフレーズ１つひとつに練られた構成力が感じられるようになり、サウンドもぶ厚い。要所要所で厚くなるオーバーダブやアコギを差し込むアレンジ・センスも格段に進歩しているのです。
出発点で拙かった『静かなる暴動』からグッとプロらしくなった2ndアルバム『暴動に明日はない』。もちろん、『BLIZZARD OF OZZ』の世界は望めませんが、『メタル・ヘルス』へと続く道はハッキリと示されている。晩年のランディはQUIET RIOTへの想いも語っていたそうですが、案外オジーと袂を別っていたら本作の続編のようなアルバムを作っていたのかも知れません。
ともあれ、『THE RANDY RHOADS YEARS』でも聴けた「Trouble」「Killer Girls」だけでなく、全９曲をたっぷりと楽しめるオリジナル盤。どうぞ、この機会にじっくりとご堪能ください。
