PRAYING MANTIS in 2012, who returned to Japan with Mike Freeland with “METALMORPHOSIS” that revived the initial song. The finest original recording is here.
It is the performance of “January 13, 2012: Osaka Shangri-La” that is imbued with such a work. It is the best audience recording. It is a masterpiece that the masterpieces of the masterpiece “TIME TELLS NO LIES”, which is even the legend of NWOBHM itself, are played out with the sound in front of you. The theme song “Praying Mantis” is a deeper emotional dizziness. It was talked about when you could listen to a phantom song in “METALMORPHOSIS”, but you can enjoy the live performance. And the performance of spelling such a set is also wonderful. It seems that Mike’s singing voice grew more in 2009, probably because there are many songs written for others, but the ensemble itself has evolved. The newcomer Gary Mackenzie is also fit, and above all, the combination of Tino Troy and Andy Burgess is clear.
“METALMORPHOSIS” was a special album celebrating the 30th anniversary of the album’s debut. This work is a two-disc set that will be the live version. Originally I wanted it to be officially left, but the quality of this work is more than enough to play that role. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2012年１月13日：大阪Shangri-La」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。今週は『SANCTUARY』時代の極上アルバム『OSAKA 2009（Shades 1478）』もリリースされますが、2012年もマイク・フリーランドをフロントに据え、同じように渋谷クラブクアトロ（１月12日）と大阪（本作）の２回だけのジャパンツアーでした。そんな状況だけでなく、本作は録音家も『OSAKA 2009』と同じ。当店ではお馴染みの名手“西日本最強テーパー”氏のオリジナル・マスターからダイレクトにデジタル化された銘品中の銘品です。
実際、本作はサウンドも姉妹作と酷似。極太な芯には距離感どころか空間感覚さえまったくなく、くっきり繊細なディテールも見事なセパレート感も絶大。観客の熱狂さえバンドの演奏音よりも遠くに感じられ、ミックス卓直結の流出サウンドボードじゃないかと思うような異様なダイレクト感の超・名録音なのです。
そんな超絶ド密着サウンドで描かれるのは、「生演奏版METALMORPHOSIS」とでも言えるフルショウ。せっかくの姉妹同時リリースでもありますので、ここで比較しながらセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。初期曲を復刻した『METALMORPHOSIS』レパートリーを大盤振る舞いしており、実に「Beads Of Ebony」以外の全曲を取り上げている。NWOBHMの伝説そのものでさえある名盤『TIME TELLS NO LIES』の名曲群が目の前サウンドで繰り出される様は圧巻。さらに深い感慨に目眩が起きるのが、テーマソング的な「Praying Mantis」。『METALMORPHOSIS』でも幻の曲が聴けると話題になりましたが、その生演奏を楽しめるのです。しかも、この曲はマンティらしい叙情と言うよりはノリの良いライヴ向きの佳曲。本来の姿であるステージ・バージョンをサウンドボードばりの超極上サウンドで味わえるわけです。
そして、そんなセットを綴るパフォーマンスも素晴らしい。他人用に書かれた曲が多いせいか、マイクの歌声は2009年の方が伸びがあったようにも思えますが、アンサンブル自体は進化。新加入のゲイリー・マッケンジーもフィットしており、何よりティノ・トロイ＆アンディ・バーゲスのコンビネーションが冴えているのです。
アルバムデビュー30周年を祝う特別アルバムだった『METALMORPHOSIS』。本作は、そのライヴ編となる２枚組です。本来であれば公式に残して欲しかったところですが、本作のクオリティはその役を担うに十分すぎる。マイク・フリーランド時代の「オフィシャル代わり」を務める絶世の姉妹作。その後編。どうぞ、合わせてたっぷりとお楽しみください。
