A unique board has been added to the early THE POLICE that our shop is proud of. A variety of radio broadcast compilations by the prestigious BBC are now available.
Four types of stereo soundboard recordings are included in this work. Both are collections of FM broadcasts that appeared in the debut work “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR” era with the best masters. Of course, even if you look at it broadly, even if it’s the same period, even a slight difference in the early days of the band, which produces historical masterpieces one after another, has a different meaning. Let’s introduce four kinds of broadcasting individually here.
The first thing to appear is the program “Andy Peebles Session”, which appeared three weeks after the release of the debut work “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR”. Andy Peebles is a famous DJ who was the last interviewer of John Lennon during his lifetime, and he also served as a presenter at the BBC from 1978 to 1992.
He shows four songs from “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR”, but the point is that it is a studio live. Usually, when we think of a “live”, we imagine a concert performance with an audience, but studio live performances often have no audience, and even if they do have an audience, it’s okay. The difference in the environment is surprisingly large, and for better or worse, performances that are not conscious of the audience tend to be harsh at worst, and polite at best. It is literally in the middle of “studio” and “live”, combining the precision of the studio and the taste of live performances that everyone matches. The second broadcast was the “Capital Radio Session”. The production of the 2nd album has just started, but as if it were a trailer, the two new songs of “REGGATTA DE BLANC” are being performed.
This program is also a studio live with no audience. Even if you say “live sound board recording” in one word, studio live is limited to broadcasts and is extremely small in number. At our shop, we introduce a large amount of early THE POLICE soundboard collections, but most of them are concert live, and this work is a studio live that you can enjoy a rare studio live. The third is a normal concert live. This is a stereo soundboard recording of “Paris Theater Performance on June 13, 1979” broadcasted on BBC’s famous program “In Concert”. Six songs, the most in this work, have been broadcasted, and the set is diverse, from the initial single “Fall Out” to the “REGGATTA DE BLANC” number that was under production. And above all, the most attractive thing is the momentum and heat of the performance that explodes youth. Standing on the stage and challenging the audience in front of us, the tension makes us excited even through the speakers. The final recording is the “John Peel Session” that appeared when “REGGATTA DE BLANC” was nearing completion. Although it is a famous program that is synonymous with the BBC session, it also has a very strong personality. As I mentioned earlier about the features of studio live performances, “John Peel Session” is a program that allows post-processing such as overdubbing, replacement, and effects after live performances. Even in THE POLICE appearance times, echo processing and overdub luxury are added, and the impression is quite different from the studio live of other programs. If other programs are “no audience live”, this program is a finish such as “a take by studio based on live performance”.
This is a collection of sound board treasures that includes the above four types and a total of 16 songs. Although it is an official work-class music album that overflows with the charm of the early days of THE POLICE even if you are immersed in it, it is much more fun if you pay attention to the individuality of each program as well as “concert live” and “studio live”. It also swells. One of the many soundboard collections that is exceptionally unique and a must-have and must-listen. Please enjoy it to the fullest.

そんな本作に収められているのは４種のステレオ・サウンドボード録音。いずれもデビュー作『OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR』時代に出演したFM放送をベスト・マスターで集成したコレクションです。もちろん大きく見れば同じ時期ではあっても、歴史的な名曲を次々と生み出していくバンドの初期はわずかな違いでも意味が異なっていくもの。ここでは４種の放送を個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【1978年11月28日：Andy Peebles Session（４曲）】
「Next to You」「Roxanne」「Truth Hits Everybody」「So Lonely」
まず最初に登場するのは、デビュー作『OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR』発売の３週間後というタイミングで出演した番組“Andy Peebles Session”。アンディー・ピーブルズはジョン・レノン生前最後のインタビュアとしても有名なDJで、1978年ー1992年にBBCでプレゼンターも務めていました。
『OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR』からの４曲を披露していますが、ポイントはスタジオ・ライヴである事。通常「ライヴ」と言えば観客を入れたコンサート・パフォーマンスを想像しますが、スタジオ・ライヴは無観客だったり、客を入れてもサクラなことが多い。その環境の違いは意外と大きく、良くも悪くも客ノセを意識しない演奏は悪く言えばカタく、良く言えば丁寧になりがちなのです。スタジオだからこその緻密さと、全員がせーので合わせる生演奏の旨みが合わさった、文字通り「スタジオ」と「ライヴ」の中間なのです。

続く２つめの放送は“Capital Radio Session”。まだ2ndアルバムの製作が始まったばかりですが、その予告編かのように『REGGATTA DE BLANC』の新曲２曲を披露しています。
この番組も観客を入れないスタジオ・ライヴ。ひと口に「ライヴのサウンドボード録音」とは言ってもスタジオ・ライヴは放送物に限定され、極端に数が少ない。当店では、初期THE POLICEのサウンドボード・コレクションを大量にご紹介していますが、それらもほとんどがコンサート・ライヴで、本作はスタジオ・ライヴは稀少なスタジオ・ライヴを楽しめる１枚なのです。

３つめは一転して、通常コンサート・ライヴ。BBCの名物番組“In Concert”で放送された「1979年６月13日パリス・シアター公演」のステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。本作で最も多い６曲が放送去れ、初期シングル「Fall Out」から制作中だった『REGGATTA DE BLANC』ナンバーまでセットも多彩です。そして何より、一番の魅力は若さが爆発するパフォーマンスの勢いと熱量。ステージに立ち、目の前の観客に挑みかかるからこそのテンションがスピーカー越しの私たちまで熱くさせてくれるのです。

最後に収録されているのは、『REGGATTA DE BLANC』も完成間近というタイミングで出演した“John Peel Session”。BBCセッションの代名詞のような有名番組ですが、個性も非常に強い。スタジオ・ライヴの特徴は前述しましたが、“John Peel Session”は生演奏の後にオーバーダブや差し替え、エフェクト等の後処理もOKな番組なのです。THE POLICE出演回でもエコー処理やオーバーダブの豪華さが上乗せされており、他番組のスタジオ・ライヴとはだいぶ印象が異なる。他番組が「無観客のライヴ」だとすれば、この番組は「生演奏が基礎のスタジオ別テイク」といった仕上がりなのです。
以上の４種・全16曲に及ぶサウンドボード秘宝集です。無心に浸っても初期THE POLICEの魅力が溢れ出すオフィシャル作品級の音楽アルバムではありますが、「コンサート・ライヴ」と「スタジオ・ライヴ」さらには番組ごとの個性にまで意識を向けると楽しみが何倍にも膨れる。数あるサウンドボード・コレクションでも格別に個性的で必携・必聴の１枚。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
