The album “REGGATTA DE BLANC” and the single “Message in a Bottle” climbed to No. 1 in the UK, and the 1979 THE POLICE rushed to its peak. A live album that allows you to experience the highlight performance in a super-realistic way is born.
The highlight performance was held at “Richmond Sports Ground on August 24, 1979”. Yes, it is the best audience recording when I performed at the traditional British music festival “Reading Festival”. Speaking of 1979, the two tours “OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR Tour” / “REGGATTA DE BLANC Tour” are interlaced, and the meanings differ depending on the time. This is THE POLICE in 1979. “REGGATTA DE BLANC” was completed in August 1979, and the style is that the two tours switch between the two tours. The appearance at the Reading Festival of this work was the second performance of “Europe # 4”, which is such a turning point.
This work recorded at such a show is a tight and powerful recording of the best audience. It is the 1st Gene Master that was released recently, but it is extremely clear. The thick core of the performance sounds reach the ears and the original without a time lag, and the details are dense. It may be a guest record because it is published with the addition of “This is an audience recording”, but if you just listen to it, it is a super vivid feeling that you can only think of as FM broadcasting or IEMs (although it is impossible in the times).
There are various possible factors, but the biggest one is the site. It is customary for the Reading Festival to be held on a special stage at the Richmond Playground, which is a complete outdoor festival. For that reason, it is possible to directly aim for the sound output of PA, not just the echo component of the ceiling and walls. Of course, reading isn’t as simple as it sounds like a great recording. Outdoor recording is easily affected by the weather such as wind and rain, and the sound becomes extremely far away from the PA even a little. Perhaps the recorder who made this work a thing was familiar with the know-how in that area despite the 70’s. It captures the umami of the outdoors with a splendid sound that does not reflect the weaknesses while fully passing away.
In addition to that sound, this work is also the longest ever. The famous recording of this live was about 54 minutes, but this time the new master is about 58 minutes. Furthermore, the opening part, which was a little short in the online public master, is supplemented with the conventional recording, and it is a record update board with a total length of over 59 minutes.
What flows out of this work is the scorching full stage that will be the kick-off of the “REGGATTA DE BLANC Tour”. It is a style that interweaves the new song of “REGGATTA DE BLANC” that was not yet released. In particular, it is a special set with a repertoire of “Peanuts,” “Born in the 50’s,” “Fall Out,” and “Landlord,” including “Death wish,” which was premiered all over the world. そんなショウで記録された本作はタイトで力強い極上オーディエンス録音。最近になって公開された1stジェネ・マスターなのですが、猛烈にクリア。芯も極太な演奏音がタイムラグなしに耳と元に届き、細部の細部まで密度たっぷり。「これはオーディエンス録音」と付記されて公開されているので客録なのでしょうが、聴いただけならFM放送か（時代的にあり得ないものの）IEMsとしか思えない超ビビッド感なのです。
その要因はさまざまに考えられますが、一番大きいのは現場。レディング・フェスはリッチモンド運動場の特設ステージで行われるのが慣例で、完全な野外フェス。それだけに天井や壁による反響成分がまるでなく、ＰＡの出音をダイレクトに狙えるのです。もちろん、レディングなら必ず名録音に鳴るほど単純な話でもない。野外録音は風や雨などの天候に左右されやすく、ＰＡから少しでも離れると極端に音が遠くなってしまう。恐らく、本作をモノにした録音家は70年代にも関わらず、その辺のノウハウを熟知していたのでしょう。野外の旨味を存分に逝かしながら弱点を反映させない見事なサウンドで捉えているのです。
そのサウンドに加え、本作は過去最長でもある。このライヴの有名録音は約54分でしたが、今回の新マスターは58分余り。さらにネット公開マスターでは若干短かった開演パートも従来録音で補足し、全長59分超えの記録更新盤となっているのです。
そんな本作から流れ出るのは、“REGGATTA DE BLANC Tour”のキックオフとなる灼熱のフルステージ。1979年と言えば、オフィシャル発掘盤『LIVE!』でもボストン公演が聴けますが、本作のセットは似て非なるもの。ここで比較しながら整理してみましょう。
