The name recording called “Back Umaguma” and “Umaguma On-site Experience Board” from enthusiasts is an upgrade. A decisive board that further brushes up the hot new master is now available on the permanent preservation press CD.
The performance of “May 9, 1969 Southampton University” was imbued with this work. It is the best audience recording. The reason for the “back bear” is the content and position of the show. To explain its meaning, let’s first look back at the activity outline at that time.

Please do not trust the exact number of performances, as detailed data will differ slightly depending on the material, but I think you can understand the approximate scale and flow. It was a year of progress when two works, “More” and “Umagma”, were announced, but the live disc of “Umagma” was recorded in “Europe # 2a”. And the performance at the University of Southampton in this work is also a record of this “Europe # 2a”. Let’s zoom in on “Europe # 2” so that you can feel the closeness of the show.

This is the details of “Europe # 2”. This work was just one week after the Manchester performance of “Umagma”, and it was a very close stage after 3 performances (Although the Southampton University performance is “May 9”, this day is 2 days a day. Performances are being held, and it is said that the show started after the date changed on “May 10” the following day). Speaking of FLOYD titles in 1969, “UNCUT CONCERTGEBOUW 1969” and “AMOUGIES POP & JAZZ FESTIVAL 1969” are also new to my memory, but both works are “Europe # 3” which is more than 4 months away. This close timing also exudes into the performance, and this is the reason why it is called the “back Umaguma” or “Umaguma on-site experience board”.

[Newly excavated 2nd Gene Reel beyond 1st Gene] It became long just because of the introduction, but the biggest point of this work is that it is an upgrade board of such a famous recording. As a matter of fact, this recording has been known for a long time and has become a standard gift board “UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON 1969” in our shop. That gift was the best version of the old days, but this work was recently announced and is a new master who is still exciting collectors all over the world at this moment. Moreover, this work renews the highest peak with further effort based on the master of the topic. It is the “Supreme One” that has undergone several upgrades.
So how are you upgrading? Let’s start with the base “New Net Master”. The old best version was the 1st Gene, but this time the “2nd Gene” was announced. For a moment, I thought it was downgraded, but this was actually different. In the case of vintage recording, the superiority or inferiority is not decided simply by Gene. The dubbing accuracy and the storage state of the master also greatly affect the sound. In fact, in this “2nd Gene”, the rugged feeling that covered the whole story is quickly wiped off, and each note grows beautifully. It completely surpasses the conventional version (1st Gene).

[“May version” master that was reorganized and released again] The first appearance of such 2nd Gene was “April 2022”. However, what is currently being talked about is a different version announced in “May 2022”. It seems that both of them were announced after adding a little effort to Natural Transfer, but apparently they were not satisfied with the finish of the “April version”, so they re-announced after re-arranging. The base of this work is also the “May version”, which is also very wonderful. Although the performance sound of the “April version” was improved, there was also a running noise of the master reel called “Katakata”. In the “May version”, there is no such noise, and the finish is even more glossy.
Another maniac point is the beginning of “Astronomy Domine”. The intro begins after Roger calls the song title, and Roger’s voice enters the song title again. Apparently, this is due to the on-site effect. It seems that he picked up Roger’s voice and played it after the intro started. However, in the “April version” master, this was misunderstood as tape deterioration and one was deleted. In this “May edition”, this is also left twice as it was on site.

[Original mastering of the point that meshes everything] This work is the highest peak update board based on the highest peak “May version” master, with “another unique effort” added at the end.
The effort is band analysis and balance adjustment by “GRAF ZEPPELIN”. There is no doubt that the “May version” master, which has no playback noise, is the highest peak, but due to the removal process, the mid-high range was slightly depressed, and the overall tone was dull. Only in that respect, the “April version” was more natural and superior. Therefore, this work reproduces the balance of the “April version” that should be originally by analyzing the highest peak “May version” master in detail for each band. We have achieved the highest peak “update” sound that achieves both “noiseless beauty” and “natural feeling of recording”.
Compared to the work of excavating the 2nd gene and removing noise, this last effort is not a big one. However, with this one effort, the response to music and the reality of the times are completely different. It is a stroke of “Dot” only for this work.

“Ura Umaguma” realized not only by upgrading the original, but also by elaborately elaborating at each stage. It is the highest peak update board. A historical album that can be found in the same space as the four people who created the historical masterpiece. Experience the ultimate sound with a press CD that has been permanently engraved.

★ The best audience recording of the “May 9, 1969 Southampton University” performance. The newly excavated 2nd Gene Reel, which is in better condition than the conventional 1st Gene, has an overwhelmingly glossy sound that eliminates the ruggedness of the conventional board. What’s more, we used the best master with no reel playback noise, and adjusted the mid-high range, which was a little weak due to our own mastering, to a natural balance. It is a cultural heritage album of British rock history where you can fully experience the very close stage about a week after the live version of “Umaguma” with the sound that updates the highest peak.

★ Slightly remastered RevA version that was released once in April and then re-released in May
★ Both seem to be based on 2ND GEN, but in the first place, the storage condition is better than 1st and master, and 2ND GEN was adopted.
★ In the RevA version adopted this time, the noise at the time of reel rotation that was originally in the version released in April has also been reduced somewhat, making it easier to hear, but on the other hand there is a part where the band is reduced, so mainly in the mid-high range. マニア筋から「裏ウマグマ」「ウマグマの現場体験盤」と称される名録音がまさかのアップグレード。話題の新マスターをさらにブラッシュ・アップさせた決定盤が永久保存プレスCDで登場です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1969年５月９日サウサンプトン大学」公演。その極上オーディエンス録音です。なぜ「裏ウマグマ」なのかと言えば、ショウの内容とポジション。その意味を説明するためにも、まずは当時の活動概要から振り返ってみましょう。

これが1969年のPINK FLOYD。資料によって細かいデータが微妙に異なるので厳密な公演数などは信用しないで頂きたいのですが、おおよその規模と流れはご理解頂けると思います。『モア』『ウマグマ』の２作が発表された進歩の年だったわけですが、『ウマグマ』のライヴ・ディスクが録音されたのが「欧州#2a」。そして本作のサウサンプトン大学公演も、この「欧州#2a」の記録なのです。ショウの近さを実感していただくため、「欧州#2」をさらにズームしてみましょう。

これが「欧州#2」の詳細。本作は『ウマグマ』のマンチェスター公演のちょうど一週間後であり、３公演後という激近ステージだったのです（またサウサンプトン大学公演は「５月９日」ではありますが、この日は１日２公演が行われており、ショウが始まったのは翌「５月10日」に日付が変わってからだったとも言われています）。1969年のFLOYDタイトルと言えば、『UNCUT CONCERTGEBOUW 1969』や『AMOUGIES POP & JAZZ FESTIVAL 1969』も記憶に新しいところですが、両作は４ヶ月以上離れた「欧州#3」。この密接したタイミングは演奏にも滲み出しており、これが「裏ウマグマ」「ウマグマの現場体験盤」と呼ばれる由縁なのです。

【1stジェネを超えた新発掘の2ndジェネ・リール】
前置きだけで長くなってしまいましたが、本作最大のポイントは、そんな名録音のアップグレード盤であるという事。実のところ、この録音は古くから知られ、当店でもギフト盤『UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON 1969』として定番となってきました。あのギフトは旧来のベスト・バージョンだったのですが、本作は最近になって発表され、今この瞬間も世界中のコレクターを沸かせている新マスターなのです。しかも、本作はその話題のマスターをベースに、更なる一手間加えて最高峰を更新。数段階のアップグレードを経た「至高の１枚」なのです。
では、どうアップグレードしているのか。まずベースとなった「ネット新マスター」から話を始めましょう。旧来のベスト・バージョンは1stジェネだったのですが、今回発表されたのは「2ndジェネ」。一瞬、格落ちかと思いきや、これが実は違いました。ヴィンテージ録音の場合、単純にジェネだけで優劣は決まらない。ダビング精度やマスターの保存状態もサウンドを大きく左右するのです。実際、今回の「2ndジェネ」は全編を覆っていたゴワゴワ感がサッと拭われ、１音１音が綺麗に伸びる。完全に従来盤（1stジェネ）を完全に凌駕しているのです。

【整え直して再度公開された「５月版」マスター】
そんな2ndジェネの初登場は「2022年４月」でした。しかし、今現在話題となっているのはそれとは異なる「2022年５月」発表版。どちらもナチュラル・トランスファーにひと手間加えてから公表したようなのですが、どうやら「４月版」の仕上げに満足できなかったらしく、整え直してから再発表したのです。本作のベースも「５月版」なのですが、これまたが非常に素晴らしい。「４月版」も演奏音は向上していたものの、「カタカタ」というマスター・リールの走行ノイズも入っていました。「５月版」ではそのノイズがなく、一層艶やかに仕上がっているのです。
もう一点、マニアックなポイントが「Astronomy Domine」の冒頭。ロジャーが曲名をコールした後にイントロが始まり、もう一度ロジャーの声で曲名が入るのです。どうやら、これは現場エフェクトが原因。ロジャーの声を拾い、イントロが始まってからその声を再生しているようです。しかし、「４月版」マスターでは、これをテープ劣化と誤解して１つを削除していた。今回の「５月版」では、これも現場通りに２回のままになっています。

【すべてを噛み合わせる点睛の独自マスタリング】
本作は、そんな最高峰「５月版」マスターをベースにしつつ、最後に「独自のもう一手間」を加えた最高峰更新盤です。
その一手間とは「GRAF ZEPPELIN」による帯域分析とバランス調整。再生ノイズのない「５月版」マスターが最高峰なのは間違いないのですが、その除去処理のせいか中高音がやや落ち込み、全体的にくすんだトーンになっていた。その点のみ「４月版」の方がナチュラルで優れていたのです。そこで、本作は最高峰の「５月版」マスターを帯域ごとに細密分析し、本来あるべき「４月版」のバランスを再現。「ノイズレスな美しさ」と「録音本来のナチュラル感」を両立する最高峰「更新」サウンドを実現したのです。
2ndジェネの発掘やノイズ除去といった作業に比べ、この最後の一手間は大きいものではありません。しかし、この一手間で音楽の聴き応えも時代のリアリティもまるで違ってくる。本作だけの「点睛」の一筆なのです。

大元のアップグレードだけでなく、各段階で精緻を凝らして実現した「裏ウマグマ」。その最高峰更新盤です。歴史的名盤を創り上げた４人と同じ空間に居合わせられるヒストリカル・アルバム。至極のサウンドを永久に刻みつけたプレスCDで存分にご体験ください。

★4月に一旦公開され､さらに5月に再公開されたRevAバージョンを若干リマスター
★ともに2ND GENがベースらしいですが､そもそも1stやマスターよりも保存状態が良く､2ND GENが採用された､とのこと｡
★今回採用のRevAバージョンでは､4月公開のバージョンに元々あったリール回転時のノイズもいくぶん減少し､聴きやすくなってましたが､反面帯域が減退してる部分もあるので中高域を中心に補正してます
★過去のギフト盤と比べても明らかに聴きやすくなってると思います
