そんな本作に収められているのは「2018年９月28日グラスゴウ公演」。その大傑作オーディエンス録音です。今回の英国ツアーからは冒頭を飾る『PORTSMOUTH & LONDON 2018（Amity 478）』をご紹介していますし、今週はオリジナル録音『BIRMINGHAM 2018（Amity 480）』も同時リリース。まずは、ツアー日程の中で各ライヴアルバムのポジションを整理しておきましょう。

これが現在までに行われた全公演。最終盤の英国ツアーのみ詳細に記載してありますが、これをご覧の通り、本作のグラスゴウ公演は最後から２番目という最終盤コンサートでした。
そんな本作は、前述のように「英国No.1」かも知れない大傑作。世界のマニアはまだ『BIRMINGHAM 2018』を知らないので軽々に断言して欲しくないのですが、その反面、確かに本作も断言したくなるのが分かる名録音。何より素晴らしいのは、現代のデジタル録音らしいクリアなサウンド。現場の熱狂もリアルなオーディエンス録音には違いないのですが、いざ開演するや目も覚める鮮やかな演奏音が飛び込んでくる。その芯は逞しくレーザー光線のように直進し、ディテールは細部までギラギラと輝く。空気感もゼロではないのですが、それが透明に透き通っており、クリスタル・グラスのよう。現場ではサイケな７色のライショウが繰り広げられていたわけですが、目を閉じるとその色彩までも浮かんでくるサウンドなのです。
そのサウンドを実現させたのは最新機材と録音の腕もあると思いますが、もう１つのファクターは会場。本作の現場となった“Clyde Auditorium”は、2000年にオープンした比較的新しいホール。それだけに音響も優れており、非常に鳴りが現代的。NICK MASON’S SAUCERFUL OF SECRETSはわりと伝統的な会場が多かっただけに、やけに細部までビビッドで、デジタル的な感覚のサウンドに仕上がっているのです。
そのまま永久保存プレスも考えたほどの名録音なのですが、完全無欠とまではいかなかった。最初の衝撃を忘れてヘッドフォンで耳を澄ますと、わずかながらステレオ感が右に寄っており、冒頭にマイクの向きを探すような不安定感がある。また、曲間では（極わずかではありますが）会話声もなくはない。もっとも、マイクのポジション探しは高音質のままで向きだけ変わる感じですし、ホンの数分間だけ。ステレオ感も細心マスタリングで自然なバランスに整えたので欠点と言うほどの問題ではありません。ただ、そうは言っても“奇跡の完全無欠”ではない……普通に聴く上で無問題であれ、プレス化は永久保存コレクションであり、長きにわたってご紹介し続ける「ツアー頂点」のお墨付きのようなもの。今回はギリギリのところで実現しませんでしたが、プレス化されてもおかしくないほどの名録音なのです。
その鮮やかサウンドで描かれるのは、“現代”に甦った初期FLOYDの名曲群。９月に始まった本格ツアーも場数を重ねて20公演の大台を突破。そのアンサンブルはこなれにこなれ、１曲１フレーズが身体に馴染み、バンドの呼吸感も極めて自然。これまでのショウも素晴らしい演奏ではありましたが、ニック自身が「私たちもだいぶ進歩した」と語るように鉄壁と言いたくなるほどの練度で楽しめるのです。

イギリスでデビュー公演を開き、欧州を巡って本国に戻ってきたSAUCERFUL OF SECRETS。その最終盤にして、英国No.1とも言われる極上サウンドがたっぷりと楽しめる大傑作です。
歴史の重みではPINK FLOYD縁の地である『PORTSMOUTH & LONDON 2018』に軍配が上がりますが、クリアなサウンドで円熟の演奏を楽しむ上では本作こそが英国の代表作。素晴らしいコンセプトで2018年を沸かせた彼らを初めて聴く方にもお薦めの銘品。どうぞ、じっくりとお楽しみください。
