Nick Lowe last visited Japan in August 2019. It was a time when no one could have imagined that the coronavirus would be rampant, and the audience album released from the solo live performance there was the masterpiece “TOKYO 2019.”
Four years have passed since then, and now that the coronavirus has finally reached a lull, Nick has finally visited Japan again.
Just like four years ago, this time he played and sang live, and in the first half of the live he seemed to be savoring the joy of being able to set foot on Japanese soil again. I should have left it there, but…” he said with a playful side.
Besides, the great appeal of this recording is that you can clearly hear Rowe having fun playing. Especially in the first half of the live performance, the performance was peaceful with humorous MC as before.
However, as the performance progressed, he seemed to get into the zone, and from the middle of the live, the MC was drastically reduced and the songs were performed one after another, which was interesting. From this point of view, you can see that Nick is really enjoying his visit to Japan.
What’s more, it is excellent in that it realistically captures the homely feeling that can only be experienced at a live performance in a small venue. However, it doesn’t pick up the voices of people talking around you, and instead you can hear the sound of wine glasses being carried, which further enhances the atmosphere.
Naturally, the composition has changed significantly from four years ago, although they sing and play the same songs, and especially from the middle of the live onwards, I get the impression that they included a lot more of their own classical music than last time.
That’s why the venue was so peaceful and exciting, so Nick probably felt comfortable and got into the zone.
The performances in the second half of the live performance, starting with “Cruel to be Kind”, are all wonderful with a mature playing arrangement and Nick singing carefully. The audience recording obtained exclusively this time captures the wonderful performance with a wonderful balance.
This was true for “TOKYO 2019” four years ago, but in recent years Nick’s performance in Japan itself has rarely appeared on the internet, let alone among traders, so I think it’s a great job of him to record it. I can’t help but think.
And the highlight was the encore performance of the Rockpile era classic “When I Write The Book.” The same song was not sung during the previous visit to Japan, but this time it was not only performed as the closing number, but the audience also served as a backing chorus, making it the most exciting.
UXBRIDGE is the fastest to release the latest performance in Japan, which captures the perfect finale where the performers and audience are literally one, with exquisite balance. The best audience album that permeates through the long autumn nights.
