“The BIG Finish FAREWELL TOUR” is sweeping Japan right now. Introducing the definitive set of original recordings/videos that allow you to experience the best of the scene.
This work contains two audience records for one show. This is a 3-disc set with DISC 1-2 for the best full recording of the performance of “July 22, 2023: Asue Arena Osaka” and DISC 3 for the spectacular audience shot. Five years after the death of Pat Torpey, MR. BIG has rebooted for the Farewell Tour. Let’s leave the overview of the activity to the explanation of “NAGOYA 2023 (Shades 1816)” which will be released at the same time, but here we will narrow down to the schedule of arrival to Japan and check the positional relationship of each and the progress of the tour at the moment.

A total of 4 performances. By the time this article is published, it seems that the live performance at Nippon Budokan will be in the middle, but the Osaka performance of this work is one before that. You can understand that it is the fastest release of the latest stage.
Both the live album version (DISC 1-2) and the video version (DISC 3) are original masters of this work by “West Japan’s Strongest Taper”. He is a well-known recording artist in our shop, but recently he has been working not only on recording but also on photography, showing his real dual wielding.
First of all, the main full live album version (DISC 1-2) is already a safe brand. The “strongest” sound, which is always praised as “just like a soundboard” and “better sound than heard at the venue”, is bursting, super tight and direct. It captures everything from deep bass to treble in a well-balanced manner, while keeping the contours clear in all ranges. When I listen with headphones, I feel a little more hall noise than usual.
And what’s worth noting is the video version (DISC 3). This is also great. The sound, which seems to have been recorded with the microphone attached to the camera, is not as good as DISC1-2, but the scenery is first-class. It is a superb view shot that combines visibility and experience, and it is taken from the 6th row in front of the right side of the stage (Paul Gilbert side), but it passes over the audience and captures the stage spaciously. The point is not to use unreasonable zoom. It’s the closest position in the 6th row, so if you make full use of the modern zoom function, it’s possible to close up like a professional shot, but it’s very easy to see because it prioritizes stability. In the first place, the human eye does not have a zoom function, and this non-zoom camera work also creates a realistic on-site experience.
When you write it like this, you may think that “the members are sloppy videos”, but that’s not the case, so this work is amazing. Elai! A giant monitor on site serves as an alternative to Zoom. A real multi-camera pro shot is displayed here, and you can switch between “a direct shot that captures the atmosphere of the stage” and “a close-up pro shot of the face and hands” at any time simply by shifting your gaze. It is exactly the camera work that knows the taste of the field experience.
These two superb records depict the last Osaka night of MR. BIG, who loved and was loved by Japan. The set has undergone minor changes since the first day of “NAGOYA 2023”, so let’s compare and organize it here.

… and it looks like this. Roughly speaking, the flow is “LEAN INTO IT reproduction → acoustic section → highlight including cover”. The composition is the same as Nagoya, but in the last cover section, FREE’s famous song “Mr. Big”, which is the origin of the band name, is also shown. It is a history show that extends to the roots. Also, the performance itself has improved from Nagoya. As I touched on in the commentary on “NAGOYA 2023”, they came to Japan after performing at the “MAJIAO Music Festival” in China, having restarted for the first time in five years. At the stage of rapidly regaining feeling in one performance one performance. In particular, Eric Martin has become much more vocal, whether his throat has warmed up.

そんな本作に収められているのは、１つのショウの２つのオーディエンス記録。「2023年７月22日：Asueアリーナ大阪」公演の極上フル録音をDISC 1-2に、絶景オーディエンス・ショットをDISC 3に配した３枚組です。パット・トーピーの死去から５年、フェアウェル・ツアーのために再起動を果たしたMR. BIG。その活動全景は同時リリースとなる『NAGOYA 2023（Shades 1816）』の解説に譲るとして、ここでは来日日程に絞り込み、それぞれの位置関係と現時点でのツアーの進行状況をチェックしておきましょう。

以上、全４公演。本稿が公開される頃には日本武道館でライヴの真っ最中だと思われますが、本作の大阪公演はその１つ前。まさに最新ステージの最速リリースなのがご理解頂けるでしょう。
そんな本作はライヴアルバム篇（DISC 1-2）も映像篇（DISC 3）も“西日本最強テーパー”氏による本作だけのオリジナル・マスター。当店ではお馴染みの名録音家なわけですが、最近では録音だけでなく撮影も手掛けるようになっており、リアル二刀流の活躍を見せているのです。
まずメインのフル・ライヴアルバム篇（DISC 1-2）ですが、これはもう安心のブランド物。常に「まるでサウンドボード」「会場で聴いたよりも良い音」と絶賛される“最強”氏サウンドが炸裂しており、超タイト＆ダイレクト。重低音から高音までバランス良く捉えつつ、すべての音域で輪郭までくっきり。ヘッドフォンで耳を澄ませるといつもよりややホール鳴り成分を感じますが、それも曇りや濁りにならず、むしろエッジを一層鮮やかに彩る貴族光沢となっており、艶っ艶のテラッテラに輝いているのです。
そして、注目なのが映像篇（DISC 3）。これもまた素晴らしい。カメラ付属マイクで録音したらしき音声はDISC1-2には半歩及びませんが、光景は一級品。見やすさと体験感を併せ持った絶景ショットでして、ステージ右側（ポール・ギルバート側）の前方６列目から撮影されているのですが、観客の頭上を素通りしてステージを広々と捉えている。ポイントなのは、ムリなズームをしていないこと。６列目という直近ポジションですから、現代のズーム機能を駆使すればプロショットばりのドアップも可能なのですが、そうはせずに安定感を優先していてとても見やすい。そもそも人間の肉眼にはズーム機能などありませんし、このズームなしのカメラワークがリアルな現場体験感を生み出してもいるのです。
こう書くと「メンバーがちっこいショボイ映像」と思われるかも知れませんが、そうではないから本作はスゴい。エライ！　ズームの代わりを務めているのが現場の巨大モニター。ここには本物のマルチカメラ・プロショットが映し出されており、ちょっと目線をズラすだけで、いつでも「ステージの雰囲気を掴む直写の全景」と「顔面＆手元アップのプロショット」が切り替えられる。まさに現場体験の旨みを知り尽くしたカメラワークなのです。
そんな２つの極上記録で描かれるのは、日本を愛し、日本に愛されてきたMR. BIG最後の大阪ナイト。セットは初日の『NAGOYA 2023』からマイナーチェンジしていますので、ここで比較しながら整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。大雑把に言いますと「LEAN INTO IT再現→アコースティック・セクション→カバーも盛り込んだハイライト」という流れ。その構成は名古屋と同じですが、最後のカバー・セクションにバンド名の由来となったFREEの名曲「Mr. Big」も披露。ルーツにまで幅を広げたヒストリー・ショウになっています。また、演奏そのものも名古屋より調子を上げてきた。『NAGOYA 2023』の解説でも触れましたが、５年ぶりに再始動を果たした彼らは中国の“MAJIAO Music Festival”に出演しただけで来日。１公演１公演で急速にカンを取り戻している段階。特にエリック・マーティンはノドが暖まったのか、格段に声が出るようになりました。
伝説の初来日から34年。遂にMR. BIG最後のジャパン・ツアーが始まってしまいました。１公演１公演カウントダウンを刻むように進む現在進行形のツアーと併走するリアルタイム・レポートです。西日本編のハイライトとも言うべき、最後の大阪公演を極上ライヴアルバムと絶景映像でフル体験できる決定盤３枚組。どうぞ、お腹いっぱいにお楽しみください。
