The Japan tour of “The BIG Finish FAREWELL TOUR” has finally started. The original recording that will be the first report has arrived.
“July 20, 2023: Japan Special Ceramic Industry Civic Center Forest Hall Performance” is imbued in this work. It is an audience recording that vacuum-packed the whole story. MR. BIG has not performed live since 2018 due to the death of Pat Torpey and the new corona pandemic, but it will be restarted this year. embarked on the last tour. First, let’s review the schedule.

This is the schedule for 2023/2024 that has been announced so far. “*” marks are performances in Japan. Starting with the performance at the “MAJIAO Music Festival” held in China, the tour is scheduled to take place in Asian countries for about a month. The Farewell Tour has been announced to continue in 2014, but so far only Florida’s “Rokisland Fest” has been announced. I think that the first day of Nippon Budokan will be held by the time this article is published, but the Nagoya performance of this work is the first day of arrival in Japan prior to that. It was an early concert that was the second performance from the restart even if it was seen all over the world.
This work, which conveys such a scene, is a beautiful recording with a delicate and neat sound. It is not the type to be mistaken for a sound board, and in fact the sense of distance is undeniable. However, it doesn’t mean “squishy”, rather the opposite. A strong core is coated with a thick hall sound, which adds a solid weight and dynamism to the performance. Moreover, the sound itself is beautiful. Instead of simply blurring the performance, the rapid-fire of the guitar and bass is firmly conveyed, and the sound itself becomes glossy and enhances the sense of unity of the entire ensemble. To be honest, the sound output of the Nagoya performance is not a very good reputation, but this work seems to have been recorded on the side of the PA table, and it has a very well-balanced sound.
With such a rich sound, their full show of… no, the perfect reproduction of the masterpiece “LEAN INTO IT” of the 90’s HR/HM itself is also a hot topic. Let’s put things in order here.

All 11 songs are played in the same order, and 10 songs are played in a normal concert format in the second half.
“CDFF-Lucky This Time” was released for the first time in 31 years since 1992, and “Never Say Never” and “My Kinda Woman” were performed for the first time in Japan. In addition to the reproduction part, THE RASCALS cover “Good Lovin’”, which is also a par and exchange song, is the number that was first featured in “The BIG Finish FAREWELL TOUR”.

遂に始まった“The BIG Finish FAREWELL TOUR”の来日公演。その第一報となるオリジナル録音が到着です。
そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2023年７月20日：日本特殊陶業市民会館フォレストホール公演」。その一部始終を真空パックしたオーディエンス録音です。パット・トーピーの死や新型コロナ・パンデミックもあって2018年以来ライヴ活動を行ってこなかったMR. BIGですが、今年になって再起動。ラスト・ツアーに乗り出しました。まずは、そのスケジュールからおさらいしてみましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2023年／2024年のスケジュール。「＊」印が日本公演です。中国で開催された“MAJIAO Music Festival”出演を皮切りにツアーを開始し、約１ヶ月かけてアジア各国を巡る予定です。フェアウェル・ツアーは2014年も続くことが公言されていますが、今のところ発表になっているのはフロリダの“Rokisland Fest”くらいです。本稿が公開される頃には日本武道館の初日が行われているかと思いますが、本作の名古屋公演はそれに先立つ来日初日。全世界的に見ても再起動から２公演目という初期のコンサートでした。
そんな現場を伝える本作は、きめ細やかで端正な鳴りが艶やかな美録音。サウンドボードと間違えるタイプではありませんし、実のところ距離感も否めない。しかし、それは「スカスカ」という意味ではなく、むしろ逆。力強い芯を厚めのホール鳴りがコーティングしており、それが演奏にどっしりとした重量感とダイナミズムを添加させている。しかも、その鳴り自体が美しい。単に演奏を滲ませるのではなく、ギターやベースの速射もしっかりと伝えつつ、鳴り自体が艶になってアンサンブル全体の一体感を高めている。正直なところ、名古屋公演の出音はあまり良い評判ではないのですが、本作はＰＡ卓の側で録音されたらしく、非常にバランスの良いサウンドに仕上がっています。
そんなリッチ・サウンドで描かれるのは、彼らの……いや、90年代HR/HMそのものの大代表作『LEAN INTO IT』完全再現も話題のフルショウ。ここでその内容を整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ネット各所でレポートされていますが、ショウは肩慣らし的な３曲「Addicted To That Rush」「Take Cover」「Undertow」を披露したところで『LEAN INTO IT』再現に突入。曲順もそのままに全11曲を繰り出し、後半は通常コンサート形式で10曲を演奏しています。
曲単位で見ても「CDFF-Lucky This Time」は1992年以来31年ぶりですし、「Never Say Never」「My Kinda Woman」は日本初披露。再現パート以外も、パーと交換曲でもあるTHE RASCALSのカバー「Good Lovin’」は“The BIG Finish FAREWELL TOUR”で始めて取り上げられたナンバーです。
