今回のリリースは1975年のライヴ。もちろん1975年と言えば来日公演から『アガルタ』『パンゲア』（以降“アガパン”）の大作が生まれた年です。本アイテム『“アガパン”を超えて』のタイトル意は“アガパン”の収録された来日公演から約五ヶ月後のライヴであることから。マイルスは1975年のツアー後約五年間の休養に入るため、オフィシャル・アイテムとしては“アガパン”が休養前最後のライヴ録音となっています。しかしここに収録されているのは前述の通り“アガパン”の五ヶ月後のライヴ。マニア所蔵のプライベート録音を含め休養前の現存する中では1975年の最後の音源で、非常に貴重な音源なのです。“アガパン”にて70年代マイルスの最高到達点と思われていましたが、マイルスは立ち止まってはいなかったのです。サキソフォン・プレーヤーはソニー・フォーチュンからサム・モリソンに変わり、『ラテン』『マザー・ディアレスト・マザー』と言う二曲の新曲まで試されています。前者はこの時期のほぼワンコードで突進するマイルスには珍しくメロディアスなベースに導かれた展開のある曲。後者はライヴを締めくくるコーダ的なものとなっています。またお馴染み『イフェ』もマイルスの邪悪なオルガンに導かれた怪しい始まりが非常にかっこいいアレンジになっています。音源は当レーベルの常連さんには周知となってきた“バンド・レコーディング”で、マスター・テープからのリマスタリング収録。ぱっと聴きはあまり音質に差が無く思われるかもしれませんが、マスターの弱点は音質の安定感が弱く、やたらベースが大きい箇所や全体の音量が小さかったりする箇所が散見された点で、細心の注意の元可能な限り改善しました。少しシンバルが耳に痛く感じるかもしれない箇所もありますが、同じ周波数域にある他の楽器が埋もれてしまわない配慮です。ご了承ください。コレクターズ・アイテムとは、オフィシャル・アルバムをちゃんと聴いた先に求めるものです。“アガパン”を聴いたことが無い方は無論、まず“アガパン”からです。
