METALLICA from the Dave Mustaine era, the strongest band in heavy metal history. A big decision board that permanently preserves the sound board live with the highest quality is born!
There are three types of records engraved in this work. It is a collection of two types of sound boards left in the Mustaine era and the legendary demo “POWER METAL” with the highest quality. All of them are super-name recordings that are indispensable for talking about METALLICA before their debut. Let’s introduce each one individually.
The first to appear is the only long soundboard recording in the Mustaine era, “October 18, 1982 Old Waldorf Performance”. Known as the only long sound board of METALLICA before its debut for a long time, it is now officially distributed on livemetallica.com. It is a big classic even in the Mustaine era. Of course, I thought that the official version was the definitive version … but it wasn’t. It’s a bit confusing, so let’s explain it step by step.
This sound board was first officialized in 2004. With the launch of livemetallica.com, vintage recordings will be released as “Vault” for free as part of the fan service. It was released as one of them. Although it was a bootleg mastering sound source and an mp3 compressed sound source, it was widely loved by fans all over the world because it was free. That situation has been going on for a long time, but it has changed a lot in 2019. “Vault” was charged, and at the same time, uncompressed Flac sound source was also delivered.
Collectors all over the world thought that this official FLAC version would be the definitive edition, but in reality this was terrible. What a round copy of the old bootleg. Both mastering and track splitting were carefully (?) Delivered to the crazy pitch (strictly speaking, the sound pressure was raised a little by the phone). The previous free mp3 version was also a boot source, but it was mastered as it was, and above all, the pitch was fixed. Collectors around the world are also blaming “too much omission” and “the mp3 version was still better”.
● “True highest peak board” beyond the official
It is this work that the teeth of such an official board will clear the swelling. It is one that has been permanently preserved with the highest quality in history by polishing the existing best master. First of all, we are thoroughly committed to the selection of the former master. Basically the same system as the official, but carefully selected young Gene Masters who are closer to the origin. Nowadays, various versions are disturbed, but the “most original / most unprocessed” master is adopted.
The sound created by meticulously mastering while making the best use of the sound of such a natural master is … the best ever. Of course, the pitch is also accurate, but the sound itself is even more amazing. The official Flac version feels like the sound pressure of the original sound is raised, and only the bass drum explodes. The twins were also mixed in a mess and it was a little dango. Compared to that, this work has a clear / clear outline. The bass drum is also powerful, yet it has both beauty that does not explode and power, and the treble of the guitar is also beautifully lost. Originally it was a monaural recording, but you can still fully enjoy the beautiful separate feeling peculiar to the sound board.
Such an Old Waldorf performance was known as “the only sound board in the Mustaine era”, but in fact, another kind was discovered after that. That was “August 4, 1982 Whiskey a Go Go Performance”. There is only one song of “No Remorse”, but the feeling of close contact without audience noise surpasses even the Old Waldorf SBD. In some cases, it was a superb sound board that was distributed as a studio demo.
Of course, this work is the highest version and is permanently preserved. It is one that completes the “Mustaine era sound board”. And the sound is also the definitive edition. Currently, when I try to listen to this sound source, all of them are altered sounds that have undergone mp3 compression in the distribution process, but this work is different. Reprinted from the original excavation boot of the 90’s that had no compression technology, mastering it in the direction of approaching the main story Old Waldorf performance. We also pursued the degree of perfection as a piece of music.
◆ Bonus: Legendary demo “POWER METAL (4 songs)”
The last recorded part of this work is the legendary demo “POWER METAL”. “NO LIFE TIL’LEATHER” and “MEGAFORCE DEMO” are famous when it comes to demos in the Mustaine era, but along with them, they can be called the three major demos. The previous two types are recorded in our “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION (Zodiac 493)”, and “POWER METAL” is also permanently preserved in this work.
The content is truly a legend. Until then (until March 1982), most of the METALLICA demos were practice scenes, but this demo (April 1982) has grown rapidly. Although the guitar solo and fine arrangements are a little rough, the completion that pays attention to overdubbing is a dimension that is thin to “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER”. It is no exaggeration to say that “the demo of METALLICA’s basics has been completed”.
It is a definitive board that completes the sound board live of METALLICA in the Mustaine era and includes a bonus recording up to the legendary demo. One piece that can be said to be the live version of “NO LIFE’TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION”. Please enjoy it with a press CD that permanently preserves the quality beyond the official!

そんな本作に刻まれている記録は３種類。ムステイン時代に残されたサウンドボード２種と伝説デモ『POWER METAL』を最高峰クオリティで集成した１枚です。いずれもデビュー前のMETALLICAを語るには不可欠の超名録音ばかり。それぞれ個別にご紹介していきましょう。
【メイン：オールド・ウォルドルフ公演サウンドボード（８曲）】
●最悪だったオフィシャル配信版
まず登場するのは、ムステイン時代で唯一の長尺サウンドボード録音「1982年10月18日オールド・ウォルドルフ公演」です。古くからデビュー前METALLICA唯一の長尺サウンドボードとして知られ、現在ではlivemetallica.comでもオフィシャル配信。ムステイン時代でも定番中の大定番です。もちろん、その公式バージョンが決定版……かと思いきや、実はそうではありませんでした。少々ややこしい話ですので、順を追ってご説明致しましょう。
このサウンドボードが最初に公式化されたのは2004年。livemetallica.com立ち上げに伴い、ファンサービスの一環としてヴィンテージ録音を「Vault」として無料公開。その１つとして公開されました。ブートレッグのマスタリング音源でmp3の圧縮音源ではあったものの、無料という事もあって世界中のファンに広く愛されました。その状態が長く続いていたのですが、大きく変わったのが2019年。「Vault」が有料化され、同時に非圧縮のFlac音源も配信されるようになったのです。
この公式Flac化をもって決定版……と世界中のコレクターが思ったわけですが、実はこれが酷かった。なんと古いブートレッグの丸コピー。マスタリングもトラック割りも、ご丁寧に（？）狂ったピッチまでそのまんま配信していたのです（厳密にはホンのちょっとだけ音圧が上げられていました）。以前の無料mp3版もブートソースではありましたが、それなりにマスタリングも施されていましたし、何よりピッチくらいは修正されていた。世界のコレクター達も「手抜きすぎ」「mp3版の方がまだマシだった」と非難轟々なのです。
●オフィシャル超えした「真の最高峰盤」
そんな公式盤の歯がゆさを晴らしてくれるのが本作。現存するベスト・マスターを磨き込み、史上最高峰クオリティで永久保存された１枚なのです、まず、元マスターの選定から徹底的にこだわり。基本的にはオフィシャルと同じ系統ですが、さらに大元に迫った若ジェネ・マスターを厳選。現在では様々なバージョンが乱れているわけですが、「もっともオリジナル／もっとも無加工」なマスターが採用されています。
そんなナチュラル・マスターの鳴りを最大に活かしつつ、細心マスタリングで磨き込んで生まれたサウンドは……まさに史上最高。当然ピッチも正確に整っているわけですが、それ以上にサウンドそのものが凄い。公式Flac版はモコモコした原音の音圧をムリヤリ上げた感じで、バスドラだけが爆裂。ツインもごちゃごちゃに混ざってダンゴ気味でもありました。それに比べ、本作は輪郭もクッキリ／ハッキリ。バスドラも強力でありつつ爆裂しない美しさとド迫力を両立し、ギターの高音も綺麗にヌケる。元々モノラル録音ではありますが、それでもサウンドボード特有の綺麗なセパレート感をたっぷり味わえるのです。
【コレクションにも美味しいボーナス２種】
◆ボーナス：ウィスキー・ア・ゴーゴー公演サウンドボード（１曲）
そんなオールド・ウォルドルフ公演は「ムステイン時代唯一のサウンドボード」として知られてきたわけですが、実はその後になってもう１種発見されました。それが「1982年８月４日ウィスキー・ア・ゴーゴー公演」でした。「No Remorse」の１曲だけなのですが、オーディエンス・ノイズもないド密着感はオールド・ウォルドルフSBDさえも凌駕。一部ではスタジオ・デモとして流通するほどの超極上サウンドボードでした。
もちろん、本作では最高峰バージョンで永久保存。「ムステイン時代サウンドボード」をコンプリートする１枚になっています。そして、そのサウンドも決定版。現在、この音源を聴こうとすると流通過程でmp3圧縮を経たような変質サウンドのものばかりなのですが、本作は違う。圧縮技術などなかった90年代のオリジナル発掘ブートから復刻し、それを本編オールド・ウォルドルフ公演に近づける方向でマスタリング。１枚の音楽作品としての完成度も追及しました。
◆ボーナス：伝説デモ『POWER METAL（４曲）』
本作の最後に収録されているのは、伝説デモ『POWER METAL』です。ムステイン時代のデモというと『NO LIFE TIL’ LEATHER』や『MEGAFORCE DEMO』が有名ですが、それらと並び三大デモとでも呼べるもの。前２種は当店の『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION（Zodiac 493）』に収録されており、本作で『POWER METAL』も永久保存となるわけです。
その内容はさすが伝説。それまで（1982年３月まで）のMETALLICAデモは練習風景がほとんどだったのですが、このデモ（1982年４月）で急成長している。ギターソロや細かいアレンジにやや荒っぽさはあるものの、オーバーダブにも気を配った完成は『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER』にも肉薄する次元。「METALLICAの基本が完成したデモ」と言っても過言ではないでしょう。
ムステイン時代METALLICAのサウンドボード・ライヴをコンプリートし、伝説デモまでボーナス収録した決定盤です。まさに『NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER: DEFINITIVE EDITION』のライヴ編とも言える１枚。どうぞ、オフィシャル超えクオリティを永久保存したプレスCDで存分にお楽しみください！
