伝説の「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」「MEGAFORCE DEMO」を始め、最初期METALLICAの代表的なデモテープの数々をコンパイルした嬉しいギフトタイトルの登場です！　デビュー前のアマチュア時代に世界中のアンダーグラウンド・シーンに広がり、デビュー時のMETALLICAを「世界一デモが有名なバンド」と呼ばさせた、あの名作です！
歴史的に貴重なだけではありません。レコードディールのないアマチュアバンドにとって、デモテープは“アルバムの作りかけ”などではなく、立派な“作品”。むしろ、その出来によって契約が取れるか否か、人生を賭けた「一世一代の魂が吹き込まれている」と言ってもいいのです。METALLICAにしても「RIDE THE LIGHTNING」以降、さまざまなデモが日の目を見ていますが、いずれも“試作”・“習作”止まり。しかし、デビュー前のデモそれらとは異なって楽曲も完成しており、演奏のテンションも比較になりません。その音の魅力だけでライヴを見ていないマニア達にも「METALLICAって凄ぇぜ」と言わせ、世界中にダビングされていったのが「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」なのです。
そんな「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」は、ダビングを重ねて世界中に広がっただけはあり、さまざまなジェネレーションのテープやブートレッグが巷に溢れ、偽の歓声を被せた疑似ライヴ仕様の「BAY AREA THRASHERS」「IN THE BEGINNING… LIVE」が輸入盤市場を賑わせたこともありました。今回は、雑多な音源の中でも最良と思われるマスターを入手、リリースの運びとなりました。

まず登場するのは伝説の本命、「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」。それまでにDIAMOND HEADやSAVAGE、SWEET SAVAGEのカヴァーなど、いくつかのデモを作ってきたMETALLICAですが、それらは初代ベースのロン・マクガヴァニー宅のガレージで録音されたものばかり。それに比べ「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」は、カリフォルニアの“Chateau East Studio”で録音された、初めての本格的なデモ。音質も演奏の完成度もそれ以前とはまるで違います。
リードギターは、もちろんデイヴ・ムステイン！　カーク・ハメットのソロがあってこそ後の成功もあるのでしょうが、やはりオリジネイターの凄味は違う。MEGADETHでもお馴染みの、あのメカニカルでスリリングなソロがたっぷりと乗ったMETALLICA。まさに伝説の名にふさわしい、最高のテイクばかりです。
続くは「MEGAFORCE DEMO」。サンフランシスコの“KUSF FM”でライヴ録音されたために「KUSF DEMO」の名でも知られる２曲です。「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」ほど有名ではありませんが、この２曲では遂にムステインとクリフ・バートン両巨頭の競演が実現！　しかも、曲は「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」にはない、必殺の「Whiplash」と「No Remorse」なのですからたまりません！

10曲目以降は、ボーナストラック。まずはコンピレーション「METAL MASSACRE」に提供された「Hit The Lights」。1981年から1982年初めと言われる最初期録音で、幻の初代黒人ギタリスト、ロイド・グラントのソロが聴けるテイクです。出来に不満だったため、セカンドプレス以降はテイクを差し替えており、そちらではリードもムステインです。
続く４曲は、これまた有名な「POWER MEAL」デモ。「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」よりも早い時期の録音で、マクガヴァニーのガレージで録られているだけに音質は一歩劣りますが、オリジナル曲を書き始めたばかりの熱さが封入されています。最後の３曲はカーク・ハメット交代後のテイクで、ツアーリハーサルとされる音源。最後の「Na Na Na」ではリフを確認する声が聴けます。

繰り返しになりますが「NO LIFE ‘TIL LEATHER」「MEGAFORCE DEMO」で聴けるサウンドは、まさに伝説そのもの。スラッシュの命たる“初期衝動”に溢れかえったテイクばかりです。はっきり言いましょう。ここには、我々の愛する「KILL ‘EM ALL」ですら“金のかかったリ・レコーディング盤”にしてしまいかねない魅力が詰まっているのです！
２つのデモでベースソロ「Pulling Teeth」を除く「KILL ‘EM ALL」の全曲（「The Mechanix」は「The Four Horsemen」の原曲）のムステイン・バージョンを聴くことができるわけですが、それはすなわち“現代メタルの祖”に他ありません。「スラッシュビッグ４」と言われはしますが、セールス・知名度・アングラの音源量いずれを取っても、MEGADETHはMETALLICAに次いでおり、他を寄せ付けないケタの違い成功を収めています。かのケリー・キングですら「初期METALLICAを見て、速くプレイしようと思った」と語り、「あの凄いギタリストと演ってみたい」と言ってMEGADETHの門を叩いている。実質「メタルのビッグ２」の原点がここに凝縮されているのです！
MOTORHEADの「OVERKILL」とDIAMOND HEADの「LIGHTNING TO THE NATIONS」に心酔する若者たちが本作を作り、その後のMETALLICAとMEGADETHを生み出した。世界中のヘヴィメタルの“基準”を変えた、歴史の結節点たる最重要音源。ぜひ、この機会にご自身の耳でお確かめください！
