The main press CD is a full recording of over 70 minutes, the oldest in BLACK SABBATH’s history. It’s a truly unique historical live album. For such a new name board, it’s only an obstacle for audience recordings. So we prepared an official daimyo board. Yes, it’s another version of the masterpiece “PARANOID” which is an eternal masterpiece.
The true identity of such a work is the quadrophonic mix of “PARANOID”. This is an official album that allows you to enjoy it even in a stereo environment. It is a bonus recording of the finest sound board recorded when you appeared on the BBC RADIO ONE famous program “JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW”. Let’s take a closer look at each.
▽ Naturally, this work has official quality, and you can enjoy the masterpiece “PARANOID” with a different mix. The difference is brilliant. It’s completely different from the first song, “War Pigs”. For example, in the intro section, the drum takes a rhythm, and it circulates in my head, and the siren flies from the left and right. In the next “Paranoid”, the riffs will be attacked once from the left and right. And this is just an example. Subtle differences/dramatics have been applied throughout the entire volume, and there is no point in mentioning each one. This is really cool. The psychedelic sense of space and the sense of illusion are emphasized, and the trip feeling rises. If you listen to this work, the normal board will be flat and unsatisfactory.
Furthermore, the balance of each instrument is different. The most prominent is the base. The normal board emphasizes the attack sound of Geezer Butler, but in the quadrophonic, the focus is rather on the groove. Therefore, although the feeling of ruggedness is not felt as much as the normal board, the “waviness” is more vivid in this work. There are differences in tastes, so I can’t easily tell the superiority or inferiority, but I’m sure that the facial expressions I hear are different. That historic daimyo board sounds completely fresh without compromising quality (I definitely wanted other 70’s albums to be quadrophonic…). [Bonus: JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW] I’m full with just the main part, but this work also contains a more delicious bonus track. This is a studio live performance at the BBC’s famous program “JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW” which was broadcast on “April 26, 1970”.
This take was also officially digitized. This is a take on an official CD titled “BASEMENT TAPES” in Ozzy’s best album “THE OZZMAN COMETH” released in 1997. There was no further explanation on the official CD, but it was actually “JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW”. Although it is the best edition that is still in circulation, it contains only “Black Sabbath” and the original song “Walpurgis” by War Pigs, but the first edition of “THE OZZMAN COMETH” is different from the current edition. A set of 2 bonus discs. In addition, “Fairies Wear Boots” and “Behind The Wall Of Sleep” were also included. This work includes all four songs that are the complete version of the session, and corrects the original song order.
The contents are also excellent. “Walpurgis” is delicious, but what is even more spectacular is “Black Sabbath”. Despite the debut work released at that time, the initial tentative lyrics. Moreover, it is a long version that exceeds the album version by more than 3 minutes and reaches nearly 10 minutes. Of course, “Fairies Wear Boots” and “Behind The Wall Of Sleep” are also full of the liveness of the studio live, which is different from the album. It’s a must-take take that is comparable to the masterpieces “BLACK SABBATH” and “PARANOID”.
本編プレスCDは、BLACK SABBATHの歴史で最も古い70分超えのフル録音。まさに唯一無二の歴史的なライヴアルバムです。そんな新名盤にはそんじょそこらのオーディエンス録音では邪魔にしかなりません。そこでご用意したのは、オフィシャルの大名盤。そう、永遠の名盤にして大代表作『PARANOID』の別バージョンです。
そんな本作の正体は『PARANOID』のクアドロ・フォニックMIX。それをステレオ環境でも楽しめるようにした公式アルバムに、BBC RADIO ONEの名物番組 “JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW”に出演した際の極上サウンドボード録音をボーナス収録した１枚です。それでは、それぞれ詳しくご紹介していきましょう。
【メイン：PARANOIDのクアドロ・フォニック】
本作のメインは大名盤の4chミックス。70年代のロック作品には4chのクアドロフォニック盤が製作される事がありましたが、BLACK SABBATHでも1974年の米国で『PARANOID』の4ch盤がリリースされました。当時は８トラック・カセット、LP、リール・アルバムの３種が発売されましたが、デジタル化されたのは2009年。３枚組デラックス・エディションに5.1ch環境でクアドロフォニックを再現するDVDが付属されました。しかしこれはあくまでDVDであり、5.1ch環境がないと再生できないもの。しかし、その後2016年になって『PARANOID』の４枚組スーパー・デラックス・エディションが発売。そこにはクアドロフォニックMIXをステレオ環境で楽しめるCDが付属しました。本作は、その公式CDから復刻したものなのです。
そんな本作は当然オフィシャル・クオリティで、ミックスの違いの名盤『PARANOID』が楽しめる。その違いは鮮烈。１曲目の「War Pigs」からまったく異なる。例えば、イントロ部でドラムがチッチッチッ……とリズムを取りますが、それが頭の中をグルグルと回り、サイレンも左右から飛び交う。次の「Paranoid」でもリフが１回ずつ左右から交互に襲いかかるのです。しかも、これはあくまで例でしかない。細かな違い／演出が全編に渡って施されており、１つひとつ挙げていったキリがないほどなのです。これがもう、最高にカッコイイ。サイケデリックな空間感覚や幻惑感が強調され、トリップ感がハネ上がる。本作を聴いてしまうと、通常盤は平べったくて物足りなくなるほどです。
さらに、各楽器のバランスも違う。一番顕著なのはベース。通常盤はギーザー・バトラーのアタック音が強調されていますが、クアドロフォニックではむしろグルーヴに主眼が置かれている。そのため、ゴリゴリ感は通常盤ほど感じられないものの、“うねり”は本作の方が鮮烈。こればかりは好みの違いもありますのでカンタンに優劣を語れないものの、聴いた感じの表情はまるで違う事だけは確か。あの歴史的な大名盤がクオリティを損なわず、まったく新鮮に聞こえるのです（ぜひとも他の70年代アルバムでもクアドロフォニックを製作して欲しかった……）。
【ボーナス：JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW】
そんな本編だけでもお腹いっぱいですが、本作はさらに美味しいボーナス・トラックも収録しました。「1970年４月26日」に放送されたBBCの名物番組“JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW”に出演した際のスタジオ・ライヴです。
このテイクもまた、オフィシャルにデジタル化されたもの。1997年にリリースされたオジーのベスト盤『THE OZZMAN COMETH』で“BASEMENT TAPES”と題された公式CD化されたテイクです。公式CDにはそれ以上の説明はありませんでしたが、実は“JOHN PEEL’S SUNDAY SHOW”だったのです。現在でも流通しているベスト盤ですが、そこには「Black Sabbath」とWar Pigsの原曲「Walpurgis」しか収録されていませんが、『THE OZZMAN COMETH』の初回盤は現行盤とは異なり、ボーナス・ディスクも２枚組。さらに「Fairies Wear Boots」「Behind The Wall Of Sleep」も収録されていました。本作は、セッションの完全版となる４曲すべてを収録しつつ、本来の曲順に正しています。
その内容も絶品。「Walpurgis」も美味しいですが、さらに圧巻なのは「Black Sabbath」。当時はデビュー作がリリースされているにも関わらず、初期の仮歌詞。しかも、アルバム・バージョンを３分以上も上回って10分近くに及ぶ長尺バージョンなのです。もちろん、「Fairies Wear Boots」「Behind The Wall Of Sleep」もアルバムとは異なるスタジオ・ライヴの生々しさが全開で、革命児だった1970年のBLACK SABBATHがリアルに描かれる。まさに大名盤『BLACK SABBATH』『PARANOID』にも匹敵する必聴テイクなのです。
