METALLICA in 1997, which continued to be the darling of the times even in the dark ages of HR/HM. A super decision board that you can fully enjoy the majestic monster show is now available.
This work contains two superb records of one show. “August 23, 1997 Stuttgart Performance”. It is a 3-disc set with the best sound board album on DISC 1-2 and the multi-camera pro shot on DISC 3. Speaking of 1997, it is “the year of RELOAD”, but at the same time it is also the time when the video work “CUNNING STUNTS” was recorded. First of all, let’s check the position of the show while overlooking the whole view of the activity.

This is the 1996/1997 Metallica. “CUNNING STUNTS” was recorded on the main US tour, but after that, several mini tours were held in Europe. This work was the middle day of the festival format “Europe #2”. This show is also known for having left sound boards and pro shots, but this work is the decision board set with its longest and highest quality.
The biggest point is the full soundboard album (DISC 1-2). The conventional highest peak master was an incomplete version, although it was a completely official super-superb quality. This work is a complete version that complements the missing part with another master while based on the vertex master. Moreover, this complementary part is also brushed up with meticulous mastering. Not only has the discomfort been minimized, but the quality itself has improved to the point where it is close to the main master. In other words, the main master is “superb as it is”, and the complementary master is “superb polished”.
“The sound is truly a violent soundboard.” The intense riffs are clear, down to the vibration of the strings, and the double bass hits are so real that you can feel the wind pressure. Originally, all the soundboards of this show were known as “official grade”, but it is not normal because it is asserted that “this is the best” among them. If you have noticed this article, I think you have come across a sound board that makes you feel “This is amazing” at the moment you listen to it, rather than comparing it with the official one. This work is full of that amazing taste.
And the video version (DISC 3) that follows the transcendent full soundboard is also a full pro shot by the best master. The analog feeling at the time of shooting is undeniable only for the broadcast pro shots of the 90’s, but the master freshness is tremendous. Although the sound is not as good as the album version (DISC 1-2), it is a stereo sound board that is perfect for TV broadcasting. As a matter of fact, this show is famous for its images. Therefore, no matter how intense the soundboard is, some people may be shy away from live albums alone, saying, “It’s good if it’s just the sound.” Then let’s collect at the same time with the best quality … That’s why.
Such a big set depicts a full show with a different atmosphere and content from “CUNNING STUNTS”. Let’s compare the sets first.

… and it looks like this. Even though it was 1997, it was just before the completion of “RELOAD”, and the new song was about “Fuel”. On the other hand, fast songs such as the deadly “Battery” and QUEEN’s cover “Stone Cold Crazy” are also included. The selection around here may also be related to the format of the show. As mentioned above, this “Europe # 2” is a large-scale event in which nine groups will appear in the Stuttgart performance of this work in a festival format. For that reason, audiences other than METALLICA fans are simply overwhelmed by the powerful and softness of the super-heavy mids by placing fast numbers at key points. And the mood of the outdoor festival is the small difference from “CUNNING STUNTS”. There is no production of a false accident, and it gives me a full show of Masamichi METALLICA.
Metallica in 1997 was a fat performer, spreading the dynamism and presence of a giant. The appearance of everyone with short hair, which was shocking at the time, is now nostalgic and fresh at the same time. そんな本作に収め得られているのは１つのショウの２つの極上記録。「1997年８月23日シュトゥットガルト公演」。その極上サウンドボード・アルバムをDISC 1-2に、マルチカメラ・プロショットをDISC 3に配した３枚組です。1997年と言えば「RELOADの年」なのですが、同時に映像作『CUNNING STUNTS』が記録された時期でもある。まずは、その活動全景を俯瞰しながらショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが1996年／1997年のMETALLICA。『CUNNING STUNTS』はメインの全米ツアーで記録されたわけですが、その後に欧州で幾つかのミニツアーを実施。本作はフェス形式だった「欧州#2」の中日にあたるステージでした。このショウは以前からサウンドボードやプロショットが残された事でも知られていますが、本作はその最長・最高峰クオリティでセットした決定盤なのです。
最大のポイントはフルのサウンドボード・アルバム（DISC 1-2）。従来の最高峰マスターは、完全オフィシャル級の超極上クオリティながら不完全版でした。本作は、その頂点マスターをベースにしつつ、欠けパートを別マスターで補完した完全版なのです。しかも、この補完パートも細心マスタリングでブラッシュ・アップ。単に違和感を最小限に抑えただけでなく、クオリティ自体もメイン・マスターに肉薄するほど向上しているのです。言うなれば、メイン・マスターは「素のままで超極上」であり、補完マスターは「磨き込んだ超極上」というわけです。
そのサウンドは、まさに暴虐サウンドボード。激烈なリフは弦の振動に至るまで鮮明で、ツーバス連打も風圧を感じそうな程リアル。元々このショウのサウンドボードはすべて「オフィシャル級」として知られてきたわけですが、その中でもわざわざ「これぞベスト」と断言されるのですから普通ではないのです。本稿に目を留められた方なら、聴いた瞬間に公式との比較云々ではなく「こりゃスゲェ」と感じるサウンドボードに出逢った事があると思います。本作には、そのスゴ味がたっぷりと詰まっているのです。
そして超絶フル・サウンドボードに続く映像篇（DISC 3）も、ベスト・マスターによるフル・プロショット。90年代の放送プロショットだけに撮影時のアナログ感は否めませんが、マスター鮮度は絶大。音声はアルバム篇（DISC 1-2）には及ばないものの、TV放送でもキチンとしたステレオ・サウンドボードです。実のところ、このショウは映像こそが有名。そのため、いくら強烈サウンドボードであってもライヴ・アルバムだけでは「音だけならイイや」と敬遠される方もいらっしゃるかも知れない。それならベスト・クオリティで同時コレクトしていただこう……というわけです。
そんなビッグ・セットで画かれるのは、『CUNNING STUNTS』とは雰囲気も内容も異なるフルショウ。まずはセットも比較しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。1997年とは言っても『RELOAD』完成の直前期であり、新曲は「Fuel」くらい。その一方で必殺の「Battery」やQUEENのカバー「Stone Cold Crazy」といったファスト曲も盛り込まれています。この辺のセレクトは、ショウの形式も関係あるかも知れません。前述しましたが、この「欧州#2」はフェス形式で本作のシュトゥットガルト公演も９組が出演するという大規模なもの。そのため、METALLICAファン以外の観客もシンプルにノレるファスト・ナンバーを要所に配し、超重ミッドのド迫力と硬軟自在に圧倒しているのです。そして、その野外フェスのムードこそが『CUNNING STUNTS』との細大の違い。ウソ事故の演出もなく、正道METALLICAのフルショウをブチかましてくれるのです。
実演家としては脂が乗り、超大物のダイナミズムと存在感をまき散らしていた1997年のMETALLICA。当時は衝撃だった全員短髪の姿も今となっては懐かしく、同時に新鮮でもあります。今だからこそ再評価したいフルショウを超絶サウンドボードとフル・プロショットでお腹いっぱい楽しめる３枚組。どうぞ、存分にご堪能ください。
