Along with “MASTER OF PUPPETS” and “REIGN IN BLOOD”, the masterpiece “PEACE SELLS … BUT WHO’S BUYING?” Which defined sash metal in 1986. Another version, which should be called its original appearance, is decided to be permanently preserved! Not only the official version out of print, but also the highest quality version created from the phantom test press LP is set in the ultimate specification.
“PEACE SELLS” itself is a historical masterpiece that does not need to be mentioned, but it will be necessary to explain when it comes to another version. There are three mix differences in that masterpiece. Let’s organize it in chronological order.
・ 1986: Randy Barnes MIX (A), which was unpublished at that time
・ 1986: Original release version (B)
・ 2004: Remix / Remaster recurrence series (C)
-“Randy Barnes MIX” which becomes the original appearance of the masterpiece
Of these, “B” was widely known from that time to the present, and “C” was produced at the time of the simultaneous recurrence in 2004. This work is an unpublished “A” that is different from either of them (at that time). “A” also became a bonus for “C” for 4 songs, but this work contains all songs of the album.
Then what is “A”? It was a product of the label transfer that broke out at the time. In the first place, “PEACE SELLS” is an album produced during the “COMBAT” label era. Recorded co-produced by Dave Mustaine and Randy Barnes, Randy mixed to complete the “A”. However, at that timing, the transfer from “COMBAT” to “CAPITOL” was decided. The “CAPITOL” label discards the master once completed and asks Paul Lani to remix it. As a result, the well-known release version “B” was born.
Originally, “A” was a haze that was buried in the darkness without seeing the light of day, but the full version will be released by two routes. The first is the test press LP produced at that time. It was produced on a trial basis before full-scale production, but “MUSIC FOR NATIONS”, which was distributed in the UK for “COMBAT”, used “A” when producing the test board. .. Of course, it is a test board and has not been released yet, and the number of presses is very small. It was an extremely rare item that was called the “Holy Grail of Megadeth”. And the other route is the 25th anniversary box of “PEACE SELLS” released in 2011. The regular version of the 25th anniversary is a set of 2 CDs, but the box is a luxurious version of “CD x 5 + LP x 3”. And one of them was the complete version of “A”. This work is a press CD that has been reproduced with the highest quality from these two official items and permanently preserved by coupling.
● Includes both “Test LP version” and “25th anniversary box version”
The first half of this work is the test press LP “MFN 64” produced by “MUSIC FOR NATIONS” mentioned above. Although it is an extremely rare LP, the Langley label succeeded in discovering a mint quality record. It has been loved as a big staple in our shop for a long time. After that, it was thought that “Randy Barnes MIX” was made into an official CD in the 25th anniversary box, so it was dismissed … but that didn’t happen. In fact, the “MFN 64” wake-up sounded much better than the 25th anniversary box version.
The difference is clear. First of all, the feeling of echo. Especially for vocals, the box version has a thick bathroom echo like “SO FAR, SO GOOD”, while the “MFN 64” version is tight. The second difference is the stereo feeling. Again, the box version seemed to be solidified, while the “MFN 64” version was beautifully separated. It feels wider.
The difference so far is a favorite story, but the decisive factor is the third master freshness. The 25th anniversary box version has a tingling noise on the guitar. This is probably due to differences in the original sources. As a matter of fact, the box version is also digitized from the test press board, but it was not based on “British MUSIC FOR NATIONS” but by “US COMBAT”. It’s unclear whether it’s because of the board quality or the cutting, but the box version gets more and more fluffy as the song progresses, and it’s quite noticeable in the last songs “Devil’s Island” and “My Last Words” on the AB side. On the other hand, the “MFN 64” version remains lustrous throughout.
That’s why it was a 25th anniversary box version that was one step behind “MFN 64” in terms of quality, but now it is also out of print. It is a premier product. Therefore, in the latter half of this work, the 25th anniversary box version, which is also the official official CD version, is also recorded at the same time. We have completely recorded the two existing “Randy Barnes MIX”.
And the important thing is the content. It’s totally different from the fat bass “Wake Up Dead” from the moment it’s played, but it’s not just the sound. The easiest place to put it into words is the title song “Peace Deals”. In the product version “B”, the guitar and bass break with the vocals and interact with the vocals, but in the original “A”, the performance continues without breaking, making it more groovy. As you can see, there are differences in takes and arrangements here and there. Of course, Mustaine was aiming for this work “A” at the time of production. This is the meaning of the “original appearance” mentioned at the beginning.
-The bonus “These Boots” is also an extremely rare soundtrack version
Although I’m full with just two full albums, this work has a bonus recording of even more delicious rare tracks. It’s Nancy Sinatra’s cover “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'”. Of course, it is also a song included in “KILLING IS MY BUSINESS”, but this work is a completely different re-recorded version. This version was produced in 1987, after “PEACE SELLS” and was reprinted for the movie “DUDES”. The recording member is “Poland / Samuelson”.
And the content clearly exceeds the “KILLING IS MY BUSINESS” version. The sound produced by Paul Lani is very similar to the official version “PEACE SELLS”, and if the improved playing ability is excellent, the arrangement polished live is also cool. The lyrics are still changed from Sinatra to moss, and of course there is no beep. It’s a strange version of the song, thanks to Sinatra’s complaints, but it’s definitely a masterpiece.
Also, this work is the ultimate version that is particular about the sauce. This reprinted version was also heard on some rare track collections, but most of them were jarring LPs. However, this work is a lossless reprint from the CD version released only in the United States at that time. The volume and sound pressure are the same as the main part so that you can listen to it as an album, but other than that, it is the best version without any processing.
* Aside: Speaking of rare tracks of this era, there is another mix of “Peace Deals” provided on the compilation “BULLETS VOLUME ONE”. However, the true identity of this is Randy Barnes MIX. It is not included in this work because it only covers the main story.
Complete with 2 full versions of “Randy Barnes MIX”, it is one that you can enjoy not only those who missed the premiered 25th anniversary box, but also the test press LP version with a sound that exceeds the official CD. Furthermore, the best version of “These Boots” is permanently saved. It is a press CD that will be the “decision board of the PEACE SELLS era”. That is the absolute work that I would like you to collect alongside the official masterpiece. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★ Original mix version of “PEACE SELLS … BUT WHO’S BUYING?” Which was not released at that time. Includes two versions, a version created from the extremely rare test press LP “MFN 64” and an official CD version recorded in the 25th anniversary box, and a bonus re-recorded soundtrack version of “These Boots” is added. It covers studio rare tracks from the “PEACE SELLS” era. Not only does “PEACE SELLS” have a different sound, but some songs have different takes and arrangements, so you can enjoy the original appearance that was envisioned at the time of production. “These Boots” is also the best version with a much higher degree of perfection than the 1st album.
The main press CD is a definitive edition where you can fully experience the original appearance of the daimyo “PEACE SELLS” with the highest peak sound, and you can also enjoy the reprinted version of the precious “These Boots”. From a different point of view, this can be called “Complete Works of Official Rare Tracks for the 2nd Album”. Of course, there are other official rare tracks besides “PEACE SELLS”. Therefore, we have also prepared a profitable board that can completely eliminate the official rare tracks of the era when it was advocating “Intellectual Slash”.
The treasure of 12 tracks is contained in this work. It can be roughly divided into four, so let’s introduce each one individually.
● KILLING IS MY BUSINESS era (1 song, 2 types)
The first to appear is “These Boots” from the debut work “KILLING IS MY BUSINESS … AND BUSINESS IS GOOD!”. I heard the 1987 re-recorded version on the main press CD, but here I have recorded the 1985 original version and the 2002 remastered remastered version. The former is especially valuable. After the release, Nancy Sinatra complained about the vulgar change lyrics, so she had to remove it from the album, and the original version with 8 songs became the premiere version at once. Maybe some of you were looking at the original version for tens of thousands of yen with your finger in the 90’s. Of course, in this work, even the original release version is reproduced losslessly from the CD instead of the LP.
And, in the 2002 remastered reissue, the problematic lyrics part was recorded with a “beep” version. It was also a take that was ironic in itself and that Mustaine’s rebellious spirit exploded, despite the violent and violent processing.
● Single recording live sound source (2 songs)
Next up are two live tracks from the single “Wake Up Dead”. It was also the only official live in the “Chris Poland / Gar Samuelson Era” until the Cleveland performance was officially announced on the 25th anniversary of “PEACE SELLS”.
Also, the detailed date of the live is not credited to the official board, but the identity is “March 6, 1987 Hammersmith Odeon performance”. Yes, you can enjoy the full version of this show on our press masterpiece “DEFINITIVE HAMMERSMITH 1987 (Zodiac 484)”.
● SO FAR, SO GODD era (4 songs, 5 types)
Includes 5 tracks from the 3rd album “SO FAR, SO GOOD … SO WHAT!”. The four tracks are “Paul Lani MIX” which was also recorded on the 2004 remastered version, but the valuable one is “In My Darkest Hour (O.S.T. Version)”. This was recorded only on the soundtrack of the movie “The Metal Years”. It’s a long version with a guitar intro that isn’t well known, but it’s not in the album version.
● Guest participation in other bands (3 songs)
The last section is 3 songs that Mustaine participated in other bands. First of all, “White Rabbit” of the power metal band SANCTUARY. He also participates as a lead guitar and scream on the cover of JEFFERSON AIRPLANE from the 1987 work “REFUGE DENIED” produced by Mustaine.
Next are MALICE’s “License To Kill” and “Chain Gang Woman”. A band of Jeff Reynolds who was enrolled in MEGADETH for a moment, Mustaine and Ellefson put a shout chorus on the two songs recorded in 1987’s “LICENSE TO KILL”.
A rare version that can no longer be expected to reoccur, a blind spot soundtrack, guest participation songs, etc …. A total of 12 tracks, a hidden treasure collection of about 55 minutes. As expected, it has not been recorded from “THE FINAL KILL” which is new to memory, but other early rare tracks can be almost covered by the main press CD and this work (furthermore, “EXPANDED” released at the same time this week. If you also purchase “TREASURES 1989-1999”, you will be able to hold it all at once until the “RISK” era). A gorgeous set that fills the holes you missed and completes your collection at once. Please do not miss this opportunity.
