Following Andy Powell’s original WISHBONE ASH, Martin Turner embarked on the 50th anniversary project of “Hundred-Eyed Giant Argus”. The original recording that tells the scene has arrived.
“November 11, 2022: Hockley Performance” is imbued in this work. It is the best audience recording. 2022 is 50 years since the release of the masterpiece “ARGUS”, and both the original WISHBONE ASH and Martin Turner are conducting tours of all “ARGUS” songs. At our shop, we introduced the original WISHBONE ASH version of the live album “SELLERSVILLE 2022 (Uxbridge 1632)”, but this time it was combined with the appearance of the Martin Turner version. Let’s start with an overview of the activity.

This is the schedule for 2022/2023 that has been announced so far. In May, I performed live only once in Greece, but all the other performances were in my home country, England. New drummer Sonny Flint was added in June, and the 50th anniversary tour “ARGUS + WISHBONE FOUR Tour” started in August. Instead of repeating the stage and moving every day, it was a style of repeating detailed schedules several times, and the Hockley performance of this work was the 14th concert. On this day as well, I was performing live in Exeter, where I was accustomed to about 350km).
This work, which was recorded at such a show, is truly a superb commentary board. It is an original recording of only this work given by the recording artist himself, but the taper is not just a person. In our shop, he is a familiar master of “British masters” and is a recordist who has been recording in all live spaces near London since the 1980s. Even in the history of rock recordings, there is no other person who has been active for such a long time, and the recording technique backed by that experience is the realm of craftsmanship. While boasting a sound board-like taste, with a sense of close contact without a sense of distance, vivid details, and a clear separate feeling, it also deliciously captures the “closed room feeling of a club” that is different from simple line recording. It is a super-realistic superb recording that reproduces the “current British scene” in Japan far away.
The full show that became a hot topic “ARGUS + WISHBONE FOUR + α” was depicted with such realistic sound. The 50th anniversary tour of the original WISHBONE ASH was centered on reproducing “ARGUS”, but the Martin version (as the tour title) plays not only “ARGUS” but also “WISHBONE FOUR”. However, it is miso that it is “all songs” and not “reproduction”. Let’s organize the contents here.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2022年11月11日：ホックレイ公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。2022年は大代表作『ARGUS』のリリースから50年であり、本家WISHBONE ASHもマーティン・ターナーもそれぞれ『ARGUS』全曲演奏ツアーを実施しています。当店では、本家WISHBONE ASH版のライヴアルバム『SELLERSVILLE 2022（Uxbridge 1632）』をご紹介しましたが、今回はマーティン・ターナー版の登場と相成ったわけです。まずは、その活動全景から始めましょう。

これが現在までに公表されている2022年／2023年のスケジュール。５月にはギリシャで１回だけライヴを行っていますが、他はすべて母国イギリス公演でした。６月には新ドラマーのソニー・フリントを加入させ、８月からいよいよ50周年ツアー“ARGUS + WISHBONE FOUR Tour”を開始。連日ステージと移動を繰り返すという感じではなく、数回ずつの細かい日程を重ねるスタイルで、本作のホックレイ公演はその14公演目にあたるコンサートでした（ちなみに、アンディの本家WISHBONE ASHも英国ツアー中で、この日も350kmほど慣れたエクセターでライヴを行っていました）。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、まさに極上の実況盤。録音家本人から譲られた本作だけのオリジナル録音なのですが、そのテーパーがただ者ではない。当店では“英国の巨匠”でお馴染みの名手で、80年代からロンドン近郊のあらゆるライヴスペースで録音し続けている記録家なのです。ロックの録音史でもこれほど長く活動を続けている人物は類がなく、その経験に裏打ちされた録音技も匠の域。距離感のないド密着感や鮮やかなディテール、鮮明なセパレート感……と、サウンドボード的な旨みをを誇りつつ、単なるライン録音とは違う「クラブの密室感」も美味しく捉えている。まさに「今の英国の現場」を遠く離れた日本で再現してくれる超リアル系の極上録音なのです。
そんなリアル・サウンドで画かれるのは、話題沸騰の「ARGUS＋WISHBONE FOUR＋α」となるフルショウ。本家WISHBONE ASHの50周年ツアーは『ARGUS』再現を軸としていましたが、マーティン版は（ツアー・タイトル通り）『ARGUS』だけでなく『WISHBONE FOUR』も全曲演奏しています。ただし「全曲」であって「再現」ではないのがミソ。ここで、その内容を整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ショウは「ARGUS→WISHBONE FOUR→アンコール」となっていますが、アルバム内では入れ替え。『ARGUS』ではＡ面ラストの「Blowin’ Free」をＢ面の後に持ってきてハイライトを演出していますし、『WISHBONE FOUR』にしても「No Easy Road」「Doctor」を後半に移動させている。これにより、よりライヴに相応しい流れが生まれており、単にオリジナルをなぞるよりも効果的になっているのです。
