This is the 1975/1976 LITTLE FEAT. They joined “The Who by Numbers Tour” only for 4 performances, and this work is one of them. It was a concert on the first day of “Europe #2”. “LIVE IN HOLLAND 1976” is also the same “Europe # 2”, but it was a solo performance one week after this work (after 5 performances).
Such a show was not only THE WHO and LITTLE FEAT, but also THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND, STREETWALKERS, OUTLAWS, and WIDOWMAKER. The pattern was broadcast and produced many masterpieces. This work is such a classic LITTLE FEAT edition, and it is the highest peak CD made from the best master.
In fact, the quality is completely official, as it is a big classic. Not only the sound quality but also the separate feeling of each instrument and the stereo feeling are wonderful, the well-balanced mix is also wonderful. そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1976年５月31日ロンドン公演」。THE WHOの“The Who by Numbers Tour”に帯同した際のステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。1976年のLITTLE FEATと言えば『THE LAST RECORD ALBUM』時代であり、オフィシャル発掘盤『LIVE IN HOLLAND 1976』の衝撃をご記憶の方も多いのではないでしょうか。そんな中で本作のポジションはいかなるものなのか。早速、当時のスケジュールを紐解いてみましょう。

そんなショウはTHE WHOやLITTLE FEATだけではなく、THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BANDやSTREETWALKERS、OUTLAWS、WIDOWMAKERまで出演した一大フェス形式。その模様は放送され、幾多の名作を生み出してきました。本作は、そんな大定番のLITTLE FEAT編であり、ベスト・マスターからCD化された最高峰盤なのです。
実際、大定番だけあってクオリティは完全オフィシャル級。音質だけに止まらず、各楽器のセパレート感もステレオ感も見事ならバランスも整ったミックスも素晴らしい。観客の喝采が遠く遠くのさざ波のように微かな点では卓直結系っぽくもあるのですが、肝心要の演奏音やヴォーカルはオフィシャル然としていて美しい。それこそ発掘盤『LIVE IN HOLLAND 1976』と並べても半歩も譲らない………いや、むしろ本作の方が上回っているくらいです。
そんなオフィシャル超越級サウンドで画かれるのは、歴史に名演として残るステージ。前述のように当日は６組が出演するフェス形式のためにLITTLE FEATの持ち時間は約１時間だったのですが、その中に『LIVE IN HOLLAND 1976』でも聴けない名曲も取り上げられている。ここで比較しながらセットを整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。そして、そのセットを綴るパフォーマンスこそが素晴らしい。現場は生憎の雨模様で苦戦するバンドも多かったのですが、LITTLE FEATは悪天候をまったく感じさせない熱演を繰り広げている。当時はローウェル・ジョージが『NME』誌の表紙を飾って「ロックの未来」と紹介されるほどの歓待ぶりだったのですが、実際のライヴレビューでも絶賛が並ぶほどでした。
残念ながらジョージの急逝によって『NME』誌が夢見た「ロックの未来」は霧散してしまうわけですが、本作にはその輝きがしっかりと刻まれている。公式『LIVE IN HOLLAND 1976』以上に歴史的な最重要サウンドボード・アルバム。どうぞ、永久保存プレスCDでいつでも、いつまでもお楽しみください。
