中でも赤いレーベルのファースト・プレスは関東と関西の電圧の違いからピッチが狂った状態でレコードがプレスされてしまったのは非常に有名なエピソード。そうした問題を置いてもなお、ファースト・プレスならではの鮮度抜群な状態は別格で、現在では正確なピッチで収録されたセカンド・プレス以上に評価の高いビンテージ・アイテムへと昇格しています。そもそもOGというレーベルに対する評価自体が近年マニアの間で急上昇していますが、そうした状況を受け、ビートルズの武道館公演初日を初めてリリースしてみせた「LIVE IN JAPAN」以上にOGのリリースした最高のアイテムという評価は揺るぎないものなりました。

それはCD時代を迎えてからというもの、929サウンドボード録音の音質があまりにも劣っていたことが大きかったと言わざるを得ません。確かに、ライブの終盤まで音源の発掘が進んだことは救いでしたが。しかしオリジナルLPの音質と比べ、過去に出回ったCDアイテム、特に90年代に生み出されたものとの差はあまりにも大きかった。それは今回再リリースされる本アイテムと聞き比べれば一目瞭然。元来ヒスノイズの入った音源ではありますが、それがLPでは「サーッ」っとヒスらしく響くのに対し、CDアイテムでは「ザー」や「ゴー」といった具合に吹き荒れる様が聞き苦しかったことは忘れられません。
より近年リリースされたアイテムになると、それはだいぶヒスらしい状態にまで戻ってくれてはいたですが、何度も繰り返すようにLPのクリアネスにどうしても到達できない。やはり1971年当時のフレッシュなマスター・テープをそのまま盤へ封じ込めたOG盤というのは本当に偉大なもの。それこそが不朽の名盤と呼ばれる所以でしょう。

今やカリスマ的だと表現しても過言ではない、OGオリジナルのメガレア・アイテムと化した「LIVE IN JAPAN 1971」ファースト・プレスLP最大の問題であったピッチの大きな狂いをアジャストし、限定のプレスCDで簡単にプレイバックできるようにしたのが昨年の当店リリース。これは待ってましたとばかりにマニアが飛びつき、あっという間にSold Outになっています。そのせいで今回同時リリースとなるウインストン・リマスターの「929」と同様、お客様からの再リリースの要望がこれまた絶えないアイテムでありました。すべての929アイテムの源流となったオリジナルLPの風格や味わいをCDで手軽に味わえるというのは、やはり便利。
そこで今回の再リリースと相成る訳ですが、ウインストン・リマスター「929」再リリースとは違い、こちらは前回のバージョンとはまったく違うものだとお考え下さい。というのも、前回は「LIVE IN JAPAN 1971」ファースト・プレスの問題を解消した状態でネット上に現れたものを元にしていたのですが、今回は改めて提供されたファースト・プレスのミント・コンディションLPを丁寧にCD化しているのです。それによって全体に散見されたスクラッチ・ノイズが一気に払拭されたクリアーな状態へとバージョン・アップを遂げました。これだけでもリスニング上の違いがはっきり分かる今回のリリースですが、それだけにはとどまりません。
より良いコンディションの良い盤を元にしたことで、前回と比べるとまるで薄皮が取れたかのようなクリアネスが感じられますし、何よりも「Communication Breakdown」の冒頭で起きていた、微弱な音飛びもありません。そして元々929サウンドボードにおいてピッチの狂いがちなポイントだったアコースティック・コーナー。おまけにギターのチューニングを半音下げて演奏していたことから、前回はピッチの狂いを見落としていた「Tangerine」も今回は正確にアジャストし、単なる再発から進化した文句なしのアッパー版リリースとなります。いよいよ聴きやすくなった「LIVE IN JAPAN 1971」ファースト・プレスのCDバージョン、その素晴らしさをじっくりご堪能下さい！
