Suddenly it started with high tension After Midnight, and from the new album, Crazy Country Hop, Slow Down Linda and she performed three songs, I’ve Got A Rock’N Roll Heart. As the tour progressed, new songs were steadily falling off the set list, so it was only at the beginning of the US Open that Hawkins was participating in that three songs were shown. 1983年は、アルコール中毒を克服し始めたクラプトンにとって非常に精力的な活動をした年であったと言えますが、その原動力となったのは、意欲作「MONEY AND CIGARETTES」への満足感だったと言えるでしょう。クラプトン健在なりを示したこの年の最初に敢行したのが本盤の全米ツアー・ファースト・レグだったわけですが、本盤は本邦初公開音源という意味の他にさらなる価値があります。ツアーをサポートしたバンドメンバーは、「MONEY AND CIGARETTES」に協力したセッションマン全員にクリス・スティントン（キーボード）を加えた布陣だったのですが、ドラムのロジャー・ホーキンスがなぜかツアー開始11公演目を以って突然脱退してしまうというアクシデントに見舞われました。そこで急遽、旧知のタルサ・トップスのドラマー、ジェイミー・オールデイカーにヘルプを求め、以降のツアーを乗り切ったという事がありました。ロジャー・ホーキンスと言えば、マッスル・ショールズの重鎮セッションマンで、名手の呼び声も高いドラマーです。70年代前半にはスティーヴ・ウィンウッドに請われてトラフィックのアルバムとヨーロッパ・ツアーをサポートしたこともありました。そんな彼を得て、意気揚々とスタートしたツアーだったのですが、ツアーの最初にそんな事態に見舞われるとは・・・・。しかし、本盤に収められたステージは、ツアー7公演目でした。つまり、まだホーキンスが意欲満々で叩いていた公演だったのです。ここでのホーキンスは、脱退の兆候など微塵も感じさせない強力なドラミングが冴え渡っており、この形で進行するはずだったツアー本来の姿が克明に捉えられています。いきなりハイテンションのAfter Midnightでスタートし、新譜からはCrazy Country Hop、Slow Down Lindaと I’ve Got A Rock ‘N Roll Heart の3曲を披露しています。ツアーの進行につれて、新曲はどんどんセットリストから落ちていきましたので、3曲も披露したのはホーキンスが参加していた全米ツアー初期だけでした。従って、このツアー序盤でのみプレイされた新曲は、非常に貴重なライブテイクと言えるでしょう。この時のクラプトンは、オール・ブリティッシュ・バンドを解散して、米英混合の腕利きセッション・ミュージシャンで結成したバンドでの初ツアーだっただけに、オーディエンスが新曲をどう受け入れてくれるかを気に懸けていたことが窺えます。その一方でクラプトンの自信はこのステージに漲っていました。79年以来クラプトンを支えてきたギタリスト、アルバート・リーとのコンビネーションが最も冴え渡った時期でもあります。それゆえに後年クラプトン自身は「最も刺激的なセカンド・ギタリストはアルバート・リーだった。」と回想したのでしょう。そのあたりもこの極上音質で克明に捉えられています。本盤での聴きものは、「MONEY AND CIGARETTES」からのナンバーのみならず、ブルース・メドレーとLet It Rain、Cocaine、Laylaといった代表曲です。序盤のWorried Life Bluesでのクラプトンのソロを聴くだけで、この日の彼の好調ぶりとやる気が感じられます。以降もロジャー・ホーキンスのタイトなドラミングに煽られて弾き捲るクラプトンのプレイが凄まじい限りです。38年の時を越えて出現した、これまで未公開だった日の、信じられない極上ステレオ音質の完全収録盤。そして、クラプトンのキャリアにおいては、唯一ツアードラマーとしてロジャー・ホーキンスが参加した、ほんとに短い時期の超貴重な初登場音源。初回プレスのみの限定リリースとなっていますので、この機会に是非お早めのオーダーをお願い致します。
