Led Zeppelin’s performance in Japan in 1972, the second day of the Budokan, there is no sound source that is as “this!” As on the first day, so there is a feeling that many items are crowded. Titles such as “MAJESTIC ROCK”, “ROLE TO PLAY” and “TOKYO 1972 2ND NIGHT” have been released at our shop alone, but the one with the best sound quality is probably “TOKYO 1972-“. Of course, many other sound sources have been released since the LP era, and it is a very blessed day in terms of materials. In that case, it is natural that we would like to make the longest version by making full use of multiple sound sources, and the version created by enthusiasts based on such a concept was released the other day.
The sound source that will be the main feature of this time has been on the market among traders for a long time, and although it is a monaural recording, the sound image is very close, and it is strange that it has not been made into a CD until now. It’s a little lacking in thickness, and I can’t hope for a stereo expanse like the day before, but the fact that it clearly captures the outline of the performance and the vocals of the plant is different from other sound sources on the same day. It is very easy to hear even if you compare it.
The enthusiast who posted this monaural recording on the net used old Budokan second day items such as “LIVE AT THE BIG HALL BUDOKAN” and “NO USE GNECO” as supplementary personnel. However, most of them are between songs, and by using the latter, the appearance of hitting from the can when asking for an encore and the humorous “buhibuhi” sound also appeared. Furthermore, the scene after the live performance that attracted a lot of attention among enthusiasts at the beginning of the release in 2016 (the charismatic DJ’s famous comment “Rock Explosion Seventy Two!” & “Thank you for the venue guards.” “TOKYO 1972 2ND NIGHT” is naturally used as a patch factor because it captured (laughs).
The main source was so good in sound quality and recording condition, but the only blemishes was the cut in the “Dazed and Confused” bowing section. There, while releasing from the same series label as “LIVE AT THE BIG HALL BUDOKAN”, it is nice to make up for it with “LIVE IN TOKYO” which is an item that was overlooked in the items on the second day of Budokan. The title was probably chosen because it has a sound quality close to that of the main source, but it’s worth it and the finish is excellent.
Very astringent is the announcement scene by the famous DJ before the appearance of ZEP. When playing, periodic noise suddenly comes in, so enthusiasts who have already obtained this version or those who watched it on YouTube misunderstood that this noise was mixed with editing mistakes or something. It seems that the number of people has decreased. However, this was based on an acetate disc.
If you’re a core enthusiast, you know that the second day of the Budokan has never been released as a stand-alone acetate item, based on a personally pressed board by the enthusiast who recorded the concert at the time, not for sale. There was a sound source on the net that said that it was done. Since the announcement at the beginning is recorded longer than any source, I can feel the commitment of this enthusiast to the fact that I dared to use it despite the noise peculiar to acetate.
And while the performer has a warm-up following the previous day, it is valuable in that it captures the scene where a new chapter of ZEP live has started. It is true that the voice of plants and the like has started to be modulated up to “Misty Mountain Hop”, and there is a blank since the United States in June, but the engine starts to start from around the new song “Dancing Days”. It is often overlooked, but it is very valuable that “The Song Remains The Same” and “The Rain Song” are sung with a voice quality or melody close to the album version, and in terms of performance, switching between those two songs is very valuable. It’s funny that it’s more sloppy than later years.
The following “Dazed And Confused” is a long performance that captures the three people other than the plant regaining their tone. In the first place, it made me laugh at the unusual scene where Johnsy was about to miss the sound from the intro, and after that, although the tension of the performance was high, the connection of each section was rough. Above all, the “The Crunge” section is messy because I don’t think it had already been held many times in the United States in June. It seems that the three of them reflected on each of them here, and it became a tight and fierce development as if they woke up after about 20 minutes, and ended with a fierce atmosphere that foresaw the evolution of the song after that.
After that, “Stairway To Heaven” will play a wonderful guitar solo with Jimmy’s echo, and “Whole Lotta Love” will be more intense than the day before. And after all, I’m glad that “The Ocean”, which was the only live performance in Japan, can be enjoyed with a modestly balanced and on-sound image with the clapping of the surrounding hands. In addition to being a new song before the release, it is a song that makes Japanese people of the clapping race cry because it is a strange time signature number (laughs), so the point is that the level of clapping around is low. Depending on the source, the misaligned clapping that occurred here was jarring.
Compared to the previous day, it was a day when there was no item called “Korezo”, but with the good sound of the main source used this time and the longest editing of the enthusiast’s soul, the best version of the second day of the 1972 Budokan was finally released. レッド・ツェッペリン1972年の来日公演、武道館二日目といえば初日ほど「これぞ！」的な存在の音源が存在しない分、いくつものアイテムが乱立している感があります。当店だけでも「MAJESTIC ROCK」、「ROLE TO PLAY」そして「TOKYO 1972 2ND NIGHT」といったタイトルがリリースされてきましたが、それらの中でもっとも音質が優れていたのは「TOKYO 1972～」でしょう。もちろん他にも多くの音源がLP時代からリリースされてきており、マテリアル的には十分に恵まれた日であります。そうなれば複数の音源を駆使して最長版を作り上げたいと思うのは当然のことで、マニアがそうしたコンセプトを元にして作り上げたバージョンが先日公開されました。
今回のメイン・フィーチャーとなる音源はトレーダー間で以前から出回っていたもので、モノラル録音ではあるものの音像は非常に近く、これまでCD化されて来なかったのが不思議なほどの高音質録音。少々厚みに欠けるきらいがありますし、前日のようなステレオ感のある広がりは望むべくもないのですが、演奏やプラントのボーカルの輪郭をクッキリと捉えてくれている点が同日の他の音源と比べてみても非常に聞きやすい。
このモノラル録音をベースとしてネット上に上げてくれたマニアは「LIVE AT THE BIG HALL BUDOKAN」や「NO USE GNECO」といった古の武道館二日目アイテムを補填要員として使用。もっともそれらは曲間がほとんどですし、後者を使ったことでアンコールを求める際の缶からを叩く様子や滑稽な「ブヒブヒ」音も登場。さらに2016年のリリース当初にマニアの間で話題を呼んだライブ終演後の光景（あのカリスマDJによる名コメント「ロック・エクスプロージョン・セブンティートゥ～！」＆「会場警備の方、お疲れさまでした」笑）を捉えていたことから「TOKYO 1972 2ND NIGHT」も当然パッチ要因として使われています。
それほどメイン・ソースは音質と録音状態が秀でていた訳ですが、唯一の汚点ともいえたのが「Dazed and Confused」ボウイング・セクションにおけるカット。そこには「LIVE AT THE BIG HALL BUDOKAN」と同系列レーベルからのリリースながら、武道館二日目アイテムの中では見過ごされたアイテムである「LIVE IN TOKYO」にて補填というのがニクい。メイン・ソースに近い音質の音源を…ということから同タイトルが選ばれたのでしょうが、その甲斐あってスムーズに聞き通せる仕上がりがお見事。
非常に渋いのがZEP登場前の名物DJによるアナウンス場面。再生するといきなり周期的なノイズがジャリッと入ってくることから、既に今回のバージョンを入手したマニアあるいはYouTube上で視聴された方など、このノイズを編集ミスか何かによるノイズの混入かと誤解された方も少なくなったようです。ところがこちら、何とアセテート盤を元にしていたのでした。
コア・マニアなら武道館二日目が単体のアセテート・アイテムとしてリリースされたことがないのをご存じなはずで、これは販売用でなく当時コンサートを録音したマニアが個人的にプレスした盤を元にしたという音源がネット上に出回っていたのでした。そこでは冒頭のアナウンスがどのソースよりも長く収録されているということから、アセテート特有のノイズが入ってしまうにもかかわらず、敢えて使用したというところに今回のマニアのこだわりが感じられます。
そして演奏の方は前日に続いてウォームアップが漂っているものの、一方でZEPライブの新しい章がスタートした場面を捉えてくれているという点で貴重。確かにプラントなどは「Misty Mountain Hop」辺りまでは変調が始まった声に6月のアメリカ以来というブランクがありありと伝わってくるのですが、新曲「Dancing Days」辺りからエンジンがかかりはじめます。見過ごされがちですが「The Song Remains The Same」と「The Rain Song」がアルバムバージョンに近い声質、あるいは旋律で歌われているというのは非常に貴重ですし、演奏面ではそれら二曲の切り替わりが後年より雑なのが微笑ましい。
続く「Dazed And Confused」は長い演奏の中でプラント以外の三人が調子を取り戻す様が捉えられています。そもそもイントロからしてジョンジーが音を外しそうになるという珍しい場面に苦笑させられ、その後は演奏のテンションこそ高めなものの、各セクションのつながりが荒っぽい。中でも「The Crunge」セクションは既に6月のアメリカで何度も繰り広げていたとは思えないとっ散らかりぶり。ここで三人がそれぞれに反省したのでしょう、20分を過ぎた辺りから目が覚めたかのようなタイトで激しい展開となり、以降の同曲の進化を予見させる激しい雰囲気で終えています。
その後の「Stairway To Heaven」はジミーがエコーを効かせた素晴らしいギターソロを聞かせますし、「Whole Lotta Love」は前日以上に激しい展開。そして何と言っても日本で唯一ライブ披露された「The Ocean」が周囲の手拍子も控えめなバランスかつオンな音像で楽しめるのが嬉しい。リリース前の新曲ということに加え、何より変拍子ナンバーということから手拍子人種の日本人泣かせな曲（笑）ですので、周囲の手拍子のレベルが低めというのはポイント高い。ソースによってはここで生じたズレズレ手拍子が耳障りなのもありましたからね。
前日と比べ「これぞ」というアイテムのなかった日ではありますが、今回使われたメイン・ソースの音の良さ、そこにマニア入魂の最長編集と相まって遂に72年武道館二日目のベスト・バージョンのリリースが限定プレスCDにて実現！
