“There is Ace, but there is no Peter” … The masterpiece of the precious “UNMASKED Tour” was born in such a transitional period. A complete soundboard album by the highest peak master discovered on its own route of shocking works is now available.
“Performance in Sydney, November 22, 1980” is engraved on this work. It is the stereo sound board recording. The “UNMASKED Tour” was unusual if the face was unusual. Since their debut, their home country America has been KISS’ main battlefield. In the 1970s, even in the UK and Germany, there were only a few performances in 1976, and almost almost all of North America was on the circuit. However, during the “UNMASKED” era, the popularity in the home country plummeted, and the tour was mainly overseas. It is also a good opportunity, so let’s first take a look at the tour schedule, which was also a singular point in the history of KISS.

This is KISS in 1980. The warm-up was at home in New York, but the rest of the tour was overseas, which was unusual. Especially since it was my first time traveling to Oceania. He received a great reception in his land, and in a sense it was also a very successful tour. From this “Oceania” leg, the soundboard press masterpiece “AUCKLAND 1980 (Zodiac 367)” is also left, so let’s focus on the schedule further and check the positional relationship of each.

This show is famous for the TV broadcast pro shot and the pro shot version recorded in “KISSOLOGY VOLUME TWO”, but FM broadcast, full sound board, official one song unit, etc. were also left behind. This work is a definitive edition that combines all three types of soundboards (complete version, FM broadcast version, and official take) with the best masters.
The first thing that is shocking is the main “complete version” sound board. Although there have been previous releases of the full version, this work is a pre-FM master of the highest peak, which is different from that, and it was brought from a route familiar to our store. The quality is truly “official grade”. Although it is more of an “excavation official grade” than an “official masterpiece grade,” the clear stereo feeling is vivid, and the well-balanced mix balance is also wonderful. The aforementioned press masterpiece “AUCKLAND 1980” was also wonderful, but this work is probably better.
The second “FM broadcast version” is recorded after such a full sound board. This is the version that was broadcast on FM on Sydney’s local station “2SM”, and this is also the highest peak master brought through the same route as the main “complete version”. Although it is an incomplete version of only 9 songs, the key point is that the mix is different from the “complete version”. I think the “complete version” has better bass power, but the mix, which is designed to be played on home audio, is easier to listen to, and the atmosphere is quite different, with thickly layered choruses and loud cheers.
And, the last one is the third soundboard “official take”. Extremely rare “Talk To Me” which was included in the Blockbuster limited bonus CD and “New York Groove” which was a bonus track on the Japanese version of the best album “YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST!!” It’s 2 tracks. It’s a genuine official take, so the mix and perfection are perfect. However, if you look at the flashy stereo effect, the sound quality itself is not inferior to the main “complete version”. These two takes themselves are the best, but at the same time they are proof that the “complete version” master is official grade.

Gene’s bass solo, which was cut in the professional shot version of the official “KISSOLOGY VOLUME TWO”, and the first half of the following “God of Thunder” are also included. Of course, in terms of value, the “UNMASKED” number is the biggest point. All of them have been sealed for over 15 years, and “Is That You?” in particular is an extremely rare song with only the 2017 “KISS Kruise” recorded. Moreover, this work is not just a rarity. They were excited by the popularity of Australia, which they had witnessed for the first time, and their enthusiasm for the performance was great. Although it is atypical, it is also a masterpiece live album that has plenty of charm as a musical work.
There was no tour for the next album “MUSIC FROM “THE ELDER”, and after that, KISS moved into the Vinnie Vincent->no-makeup era. “UNMASKED Tour” is “KISS only here” that existed during such a transitional period. This work is the best masterpiece soundboard album of such a precious era. Enjoy it anytime and forever with the press 2CD that permanently preserves the best masters by related parties!
★Stereo soundboard recording of “November 22, 1980 Sydney Performance”. This is the highest level master brought from a unique stakeholder route, and completely covers the three types of soundboards from the same show: “full version,” “FM broadcast version,” and “official track.” This is the birth of a super masterpiece that is the masterpiece of the “UNMASKED Tour”, where both the appearance and the set are extremely rare.

そんな本作に刻まれているのは「1980年11月22日シドニー公演」。そのステレオ・サウンドボード録音です。“UNMASKED Tour”はメンツも異例なら内容も異例でした。デビュー以来、KISSの主戦場と言った母国アメリカ。70年代には英国やドイツでさえ1976年の数公演だけで、ほぼほぼ北米ばかりをサーキットしていました。ところが『UNMASKED』時代は母国での人気が急降下しており、ツアーも海外がメインだったのです。良い機会でもありますので、まずはKISS史の特異点でもあったツアー日程を俯瞰してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。このショウはTV放送プロショットや『KISSOLOGY VOLUME TWO』収録のプロショット版が有名ですが、FM放送やフル・サウンドボード、１曲単位の公式等も残されました。本作は、そんな３種サウンドボード（完全版・FM放送版・公式テイク）をベスト・マスターで一網打尽にした決定盤なのです。
まず衝撃なのがメインの「完全版」サウンドボード。以前からフル盤の既発もありましたが、本作はそれとは異なる最高峰のプレFMマスターでして、当店お馴染みの関係者ルートからもたらされたものなのです。そのクオリティはまさに「公式級」。「オフィシャル名盤級」と言うよりは「発掘オフィシャル級」ではありますが、くっきりしたステレオ感も鮮烈ですし、均整の取れたミックス・バランスも見事。前述のプレス名盤『AUCKLAND 1980』も素晴らしかったですが、本作の方が一枚上手でしょう。
そんなフル・サウンドボードの後に収録されているのが二番目の「FM放送版」。シドニーの地方局“2SM”でFM放送されたバージョンで、こちらもメインの「完全版」と同じルートでもたらされた最高峰マスターです。わずか９曲の不完全版ではありますが、「完全版」とはミックスが異なるのがポイント。重低音の迫力は「完全版」の方が上とも思いますが、家庭用オーディオでの再生を前提にしたミックスはさらに聴きやすく、ぶ厚く重ねられたコーラスや大歓声など雰囲気も結構違います。
そして、ラストは３つめのサウンドボード「公式テイク」。ブロックバスター限定のボーナスCDに収録されていた「Talk To Me」と、ベスト・アルバム『YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST!!』の日本盤ボーナス・トラックだった「New York Groove」の激レア２トラックです。正真正銘の公式テイクだけあってミックスも完成度もピカイチ。ただ、ステレオ感の派手さを覗けば音質自体はメインの「完全版」も劣っていない。この２テイク自体が極上でありつつ、同時に「完全版」マスターがオフィシャル級であることの証左にもなっているのです。

公式『KISSOLOGY VOLUME TWO』のプロショット版ではカットされていたジーンのベース・ソロやそれに続く「God of Thunder」の前半部もしっかり収録しています。もちろん、貴重度で言ったら『UNMASKED』ナンバーが最大のポイント。いずれも15年以上封印されていましたし、特に「Is That You?」に至っては、2017年の“KISS Kruise”しか記録がない激レア曲です。しかも、本作は単なる珍しさだけでない。初めて目の当たりにした豪州の人気ぶりに発奮しており、演奏テンションも素晴らしい。異形でありつつ、音楽作品としての魅力もたっぷりな大傑作ライヴアルバムでもあるのです。
