This work, which is a vacuum-packed show, is a truly exquisite audience. It is the original master handed over from the recorder himself, but that person is the taper who worked on the press masterpiece “TOKYO 1978 (Zion-205)” that Billy Joel first visited Japan. Billy also sounded great, but this one is as good as it sounds. It’s not a close-knit sound that makes a mistake on the sound board, but rather a vintage sound that seems to be an extremely audience. However, the feeling of air is transparent, and the responsive core reaches straight to your hand.
And the biggest umami is master freshness. It is natural that there are no dubbing marks from the origin, but even so, it is fresh. そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「1977年４月２日：日本武道館（夜の部）」公演。かの『ALIVE II』にも採用されたショウの一部始終を体験できる絶品オーディエンス録音です。彼らの初来日と言えば、日本の洋楽シーンにとって伝説中の伝説。当店では、その象徴でもあるTV放送の他、プレス名盤『OSAKA 1977 1ST NIGHT（Zodiac 414）』など、多彩なアイテムでアーカイヴしてきました。まずは、当時の日程でコレクションを整理しつつ、本作のポジションも確認しておきましょう。

以上、全10公演。初来日にしてキャリア最多の公演数で列島を蹂躙。まさに事件と呼ぶに相応しい衝撃のジャパン・ツアーでした。特に日本武道館では４公演も実現。特に「４月２日」には１日２公演が行われ、２公演から編集された映像が“ヤング・ミュージック・ショー”で放送されました。本作も同じ「４月２日ですが、その夜の部で記録されたオーディエンス録音ですなのです。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、まさに絶品のオーディエンス。録音家本人から譲られたオリジナル・マスターなのですが、その人物こそビリー・ジョエル初来日のプレス名盤『TOKYO 1978（Zion-205）』を手掛けたテーパーなのです。ビリーも見事なサウンドでしたが、本作も負けずに素晴らしい。決してサウンドボード間違えるような密着サウンドではなく、むしろ極めてオーディエンスらしいヴィンテージ・サウンド。しかし、その空気感が透き通っており、手応えたっぷりの芯が真っ直ぐ手元まで届くのです。
そして最大の旨味はマスター鮮度。出自からダビング痕がないのも当然なわけですが、それにしても瑞々しい。ヨレもゴワつきもなく、隅々まで昨日録音したように鮮明。まるで45年間もの時間が存在しなかったかのようにリアルな熱気がスピーカーから吹き出してくるのです。
その瑞々しさをより一層感じるのが、現場の熱狂。当時の人気は一種アイドル的でもあり、野太い野郎声だけでなく黄色い嬌声も飛び交いまくる。もちろん、力強い演奏音に蹂躙されはするものの、演奏中でさえ「キャー」という声が薄膜のように広がっている。「Firehouse」では鳴り響くサイレンの中でジーンの火噴きが行われているわけですが、その爆発するような悲鳴の凄い事……。そんな現場のノリは「ロック・コンサートの楽しみ方かくあるべし」が確立する前だった時代の薫りたっぷりでして「まさに洋楽」「これぞ70年代」を肌感覚で味わわせてくれるのです。
そんな時代感にコーディングされたショウも1977年の薫り満点。前述のように初来日の武道館と言えばTVプロショットが有名なわけですが、本作は放送されなかったレパートリーもたっぷり。最後に、その内容も整理しておきましょう。
