John Lennon’s oldies cover album “Rock and Roll” released in February 1975. In 1973 John left New York and emigrated to Los Angeles, later planning an oldies cover that was invented at a time called “Lost Weekend”. We asked Phil Spector to produce and started production, but Phil Spector disappeared along with the session tape. Released. The single hit “Stand By Me”, “Be Bop A Lula”, “Ain’t That A Shame”, “Slippin’ And Sliding”, etc. are just the origin of John Lennon from before the Beatles. A cover album centered on rock and roll that became a good project that influenced Paul McCartney to release a similar concept album later. This “Exclusive Collector’s Edition” is a complete reprint of “Roots” (1CD), which was released ahead of the album “Rock’n’Roll” but has now been discontinued and has become a phantom album, and a valuable session, Studio Outtakes. It is a special limited edition that combines “Rock’n’Roll Collector’s Edition” (2CD), which summarizes related sound sources such as rehearsals.

1CD=ROOTS : THE ORIGINAL ALBUM plus
“Roots: John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits”, now a phantom album, was released in 1975 by mail order from the Adam VIII label prior to the album “Rock’n’Roll”. . The Beatles’ “Come Together” is a plagiarism of Chuck Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me” and develops into a lawsuit with the publisher Morris Levy. When I proposed recording, while the album production was incomplete due to a problem with Phil Spector, Morris Levy decided to sell it based on the rough mix tape of the “Rock and Roll” session provided by John himself. – An album with a history that was discontinued due to a lawsuit on the record side. Not only the song order and song selection are different, but the mix is also different, making it a prototype of the album “Rock’n’Roll”. Here, it is a new remastered version that is completely reprinted with the original sound source and additionally recorded 6 songs not originally recorded as additional tracks. The original edition is said to have been pressed 3,000 copies for the first time, but counterfit editions (fakes) have also been released, and in recent years they have become valuable collector’s items like the Beatles’ Butcher covers.

2CD=ROCK ‘N’ ROLL COLLECTOR’S EDITION
Disc 1 contains a recording session in Los Angeles in 1973 and a session sound source in New York in 1974. Contains separately released sound sources such as the version where the ending of “Stand By Me” does not fade out, alternate takes, etc. and official unreleased sound sources. It is an interesting content that can be said to be a document of the production process of the album “Rock’n’Roll”. Disc 2 contains “Sunny View Rehearsal”. This includes a valuable rehearsal that John performed at Morris Levy’s farm in Ghent, New York prior to recording the phantom album “Roots”. Songs not included in later albums, such as “That’s That’s the Day” and “Come on Everybody”, are included, making it a noteworthy sound source. In the following “Studio Monitor Tracks”, the final stage after the New York session is played back in the studio, and a fragmentary but unpublished take is included. In addition, “Old Gray Whistle Test BBC 1975” is a master sound source and broadcast including studio chats before the broadcast of two songs, “Stand by Me” and “Slippin’ and Sliding” broadcast on BBCTV in the UK Includes different stereo mixes. At the end, the sound source of the album advertising spot at that time is additionally recorded.

１９７５年２月にリリースされたジョン・レノンのオールディーズ・カバー・アルバム『ロックン・ロール』。１９７３年ジョンがニューヨークを離れロサンゼルスに移住し後に”ロスト・ウィークエンド”と呼ばれる時期に発案されたオールディーズ・カバーの企画。フィル・スペクターにプロデュースを依頼し制作をスタートさせるもセッション・テープと共に姿を消したフィル・スペクターの奇行や事故によりレコーディングが中断さらに裁判訴訟問題が重なり紆余曲折を経て当初の予定より大幅に遅れてリリースされた。シングル・ヒットした「スタンド・バイ・ミー」はじめ「ビ・バップ・ア・ルーラ」「エイント・ザット・ア・シェイム」「スリッピン・アンド・スライディン」等、まさにビートルズ以前からのジョン・レノンの原点となったロックン・ロールを中心としたカバー・アルバムは後にポール・マッカートニーも同様のコンセプト・アルバムをリリースする影響を与えたほどの好企画。この”エクスクルーシヴ・コレクターズ・エディション”ではアルバム『ロックン・ロール』に先駆け発売されるも生産中止となり今では幻のアルバムとなった『ルーツ』（１CD)の完全復刻と貴重なセッション、スタジオ・アウトテイクスやリハーサル等の関連音源をまとめた『ロックン・ロール・コレクターズ・エディション』（２CD)をあわせたスペシャル限定エディションとなっている。

今では幻のアルバムとなった『ルーツ』（Roots: John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits)はアルバム『ロックン・ロール』に先駆けて１９７５年にアダムⅧレーベルから通信販売でリリースされたアルバムである。ビートルズの「カム・トゥゲザー」がチャック・ベリーの「ユー・キャント・キャッチ・ミー」の盗作であると出版権者モリス・レヴィと裁判訴訟に発展しその和解条件としてジョンがオールディーズ・カバーでの楽曲収録を提案したところフィル・スペクターとの問題でアルバム制作が未完の中、モリス・レヴィ側がジョン自身が提供した『ロックン・ロール』セッションのラフ・ミックス・テープを元に販売に踏み切ったものでキャピトル・レコード側の訴訟により生産中止となったいわくつきのアルバム。曲順や選曲が異なるだけでなくミックスも違っておりアルバム『ロックン・ロール』のプロトタイプとなっている。ここではオリジナル音源で完全復刻さらにアディショナル・トラックスとしてオリジナル未収録の６曲が追加収録された新規リマスター・バージョンとなっている。オリジナル盤は初回３０００枚プレスといわれるが後にカウンターフィット盤（偽物）も出回っており近年ではビートルズのブッチャー・カバー同様の貴重なコレクターズ・アイテムとなっている。

ディスク１には１９７３年ロサンゼルスでのレコーディング・セッション及び１９７４年ニューヨークでのセッション音源がまとめて収録されている。「スタンド・バイ・ミー」のエンディングがフェイドアウトしないバージョンやオルタネイト・テイクス等後々個別にリリースされた音源や公式未発表音源を収録。アルバム『ロックン・ロール』の製作過程のドキュメントといえる興味深い内容となっている。ディスク２には”サニービュウ・リハーサル”を収録。これは幻のアルバム『ルーツ』の前段階でジョンがレコーディングに先立ってニューヨーク州ゲントにあるモリス・レヴィの農場で行った貴重なリハーサルを収録。「ザットル・ビー・ザ・デイ」「カモン・エブリバディ」等、後のアルバムには未収録の曲も含まれており注目の音源となっている。続く”スタジオ・モニター・トラックス”ではニューヨーク・セッション後の最終段階をスタジオ・プレイバックしている音源で断片的ながら未発表テイクも含まれている。さらに”オールド・グレイ・ホイッスル・テストBBC１９７５”は英国BBCTVで放送された「スタンド・バイ・ミー」「スリッピン・アンド・スライディン」の２曲の放送前段階のスタジオ・チャット含むマスター音源と放送とは異なるステレオ・ミックスを収録。最後には当時のアルバム宣伝スポットの音源も追加収録されている。
