A re-CD series from the original DAT master of the popular Page Plant’s “10 DAYS”, this time the last two stages of the Tokyo schedule are released. The performance in Japan in 1996, which really showed a tremendous excitement at that time, was a series of surprises. Its impact still hasn’t faded, but on the second day, it was too big that I realized the composition of the live that they can only do in Japan. Thanks to that, the set list of unprecedented patterns and the Japanese audience who listened attentively even though the first half of the live was a quiet repertoire made the development of the day after day completely unpredictable.
As for the last two days of Tokyo, it’s no exaggeration to call it a set list for Japan, and it’s a wonderful stage that has reached perfection. First of all, on February 12th, the masterpiece “BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT”, whose original audience recording was shockingly high-quality, was released, but compared to that, the quality of “10 DAYS” is spectacularly excellent. The face of the master is soaring. Both are too high level for the audience in 1996, and if it is “BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT” that overwhelms the listener with power, like the previous “10 DAYS” master, it reproduces the fine details of the performance. It is the sound quality of this time that will give me.
This has also been demonstrated in the “10 DAYS” master releases so far, but with the playback equipment whose technology has evolved since 1996, we succeeded in drawing out more detail from the original DAT than at that time. . Especially when it comes to the repertoire played in an acoustic formation, the effect is remarkable.
On this day, the opening was a standard pattern of opening the curtain with an early medley, but when I thought that it would run through with a push-pull mood, the atmosphere of the day was determined by the gloomy “No Quarter”. After putting in the Hurdy Gurdy corner there, it evolves into a set list of enthusiastic tears that continues with a bitter repertoire such as “Gallows Pole” and “Tea For One”, but the performance in such a calm atmosphere The “10 DAYS” master is perfect for listening carefully.
Jimmy’s wonderful play continued to be shown day after day in “Tea For One”, which became a representative repertoire of Tokyo performances in place of “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, but this day was one of them. It is knocked down so much that it can be said to be the top. It is a performance in Japan in 1996 that has not been looked back so much now, but it seems that it was at this time that Jimmy after the dissolution of ZEP was revived as a guitarist.
And the calm mood of the day’s live show reached its peak when “Going To California” and “That’s The Way” were performed in quick succession. These two acoustic songs echoed in the Budokan since ZEP’s first visit to Japan in 1971, and there were many maniacs who were intoxicated with the development as if they had slipped back in time to those days. Among them, “That’s The Way” had a wonderful band arrangement centered on drummer Michael Lee.
It was a day when such a calm number was brilliant, but that’s why the full version of “Custard Pie” was performed at the end of the live, which was a nice contrast. It’s a hard and lively repertoire, and from a maniac who went to the Budokan every day, the full version of “Custard Pie” was played at the timing when I was off guard that it was “Black Dog” and I should have been ecstatic. Every day was truly a series of surprises.
The 5th day of the Budokan was a wonderful live performance that combined such a fulfilling set list with the strength of the performances that had been worked out on the tour up to that point. A superb audience album that even those who have that masterpiece “BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT” can definitely enjoy. After all, the sound quality is wonderful, so please enjoy the masterpiece full of calm atmosphere throughout with the taste unique to the “10 DAYS” master.
大好評ペイジ・プラントの『10 DAYS』のオリジナルのDATマスターからの再CD化シリーズ、今回は東京日程ラスト二回のステージがリリース。本当に当時凄まじい盛り上がりを見せた1996年の来日公演はサプライズの連続。そのインパクトは未だに色褪せていないのですが、二日目にして彼らが日本だからできるライブの構成に気付いたことがあまりにも大きかった。おかげでそれまでにないパターンのセットリスト、ライブ前半が静かなレパートリーにしても聞き入ってくれる日本の観客を前に連日の展開がまるで予想できないものとなったのです。
今回の東京ラスト二日に関して言うと、そうした日本向けセットリストと呼んでも過言でないパターンが完成の域に達した素晴らしいステージとなった。まず2月12日に関しては独自入手オーディエンス録音が衝撃の高音質だった名盤『BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT』がリリースされていましたが、それと比べても見事なほど双璧を成すクオリティが『10 DAYS』マスターの面目躍如。どちらも96年のオーディエンスとしてはあまりにハイレベルで、迫力が聴く者を圧倒させる『BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT』だとすれば、これまでの『10 DAYS』マスター同様、きめ細やかな演奏のディティールまで再現してくれるのが今回の音質。
これもまた今までの『10 DAYS』マスター・リリースで実証されてきたことですが、96年当時よりもテクノロジーが進化した再生機材によって元のDATから当時以上にそのきめ細やかさを引き出すことに成功。中でもアコースティックな編成で演奏されたレパートリーになると効果はてきめん。
この日はオープニングこそ初期メドレーで幕を開ける定型パターンでしたが、そこから押せ押せムードで駆け抜けるかと思いきや、どんより「No Quarter」からこの日の雰囲気が決定づけられた。そこにハーディー・ガーディーのコーナーを挟んでからは「Gallows Pole」に「Tea For One」といった渋めのレパートリーが続くマニア感涙モノのセットリストへと進化するのですが、こうした落ち着いた雰囲気の演奏をじっくり聞きこむのに『10 DAYS』マスターは打ってつけ。
それまでの「Since I’ve Been Loving You」に代わって東京公演を代表するレパートリーとなった「Tea For One」では連日ジミーの素晴らしいプレイが披露され続けていましたが、中でもこの日は一つの頂点と言えるほど弾き倒している。今ではあまり振り返られることのなくなってしまった96年の来日公演ですが、ZEP解散後のジミーがギタリストとして見事に息を吹き返していたのがこの時期であったように思えます。
そしてこの日の穏やかなムードのライブが頂点に達したのは「Going To California」と「That’s The Way」が立て続けに披露された場面。これらアコースティックな二曲が武道館に響き渡るのは、それこそ1971年のZEP初来日以来であり、まるであの日々にタイムスリップしたかのような展開に酔いしれたマニアが多かったのでは。中でも「That’s The Way」はドラムのマイケル・リーを中心としたバンドアレンジの出来栄えも素晴らしいものがあった。
こうした穏やかなナンバーが冴え渡った日ではありましたが、だからこそライブ終盤で「Custard Pie」がフルバージョンとして披露されたのもいいメリハリでした。ハードかつライブ映えするレパートリーですし、連日武道館に通ったマニアからすれば今日も「Black Dog」かと油断していたタイミングにフルバージョンの「Custard Pie」が演奏されて狂喜したはず。本当に毎日が驚きの連続でした。
こうした充実のセットリストと、それまでのツアーで練り上げられた演奏の力強さが合わさって素晴らしいライブとなった武道館5日目。あの名盤『BUDOKAN 1996 5TH NIGHT』をお持ちの方でも間違いなく楽しんでもらえる極上オーディエンス・アルバム。何しろ素晴らしい音質ですので、全体を通して落ち着いた雰囲気に溢れた名演を『10 DAYS』マスターならではの味わいでじっくりとお楽しみください。
