In the 1996 Paige Plant visit to Japan, the Nagoya performance with the feeling that the sound board has become familiar again. Rather, the masterpiece “NAGOYA 1996 DAT MASTER” became a powerful blow to the situation where it is not strange to say that the sound board is the only choice. This masterpiece was an epoch-making release that made maniacs reconsider the goodness of the best audience, but that is why the masterpiece “10 DAYS” box was necessary to be re-evaluated. It has been proven in the DAT Master series so far that the historical box set that wiped out many items released in 1996 still has high sound quality that does not fade, but Nagoya’s “10 DAYS” master is also wonderful.
In the first place, this day was the day when the set list centered on the repertoire of acoustic formations, which had escalated since the start of the performance in Japan, reached its peak. That’s why the delicate sound spread unique to the “10 DAYS” master was made the most of, but the 2023 version that is actually heard here is a finish that makes full use of the reproducibility unique to the DAT master. The difference compared to the 1996 version is obvious.
The middle stage of the live was organized with a particularly acoustic-oriented performance structure, and it finally evolved into a development that was unthinkable on the US and UK stages the previous year. For that reason, the power of converting this DAT master to CD with the latest technology is tremendous. In addition to the delicacy that has been touched on so many times, the depth of the acoustic performance is also better. Once again, I was reminded that it was a unique set list even in the performance in Japan in 1996, along with the wonderful sound quality.
The opening of the show was the standard “Heartbreaker”, but when “Tangerine” was played, the atmosphere changed completely. From there, it is said that more than usual acoustic arrangements and repertoires of formations will be shown one after another. As a result, I think it was a day with a particularly maniac set list in the 1996 Japan tour. Although it was a page plant that showed such a change in Tokyo, it is no exaggeration to say that this day is the ultimate. After all, this is Nagoya. It was the first time since ZEP 1972 that the two of them landed on this land together.
Then, it was inevitable that “Thank You” would be played. Knowing that, the two performed the same song firmly. Of course, “Sakura” like in 1972 was not played, but “Thank You” in this area has a weight. It is impressive if you listen to it with the vivid sound quality unique to the “10 DAYS” master. Rather, it sounds more vivid than the sound board. Furthermore, although the order is different, “The Song Remains The Same”, “The Rain Song”, and even “Dancing Days” were shown, and finally time slipped to Nagoya in 1972.
The splendor of the “10 DAYS” master is alive and well not only in such exquisite set list parts but also in hard performances. On this day, the guitar solo that Paige heard in “Custard Pie”, which was shown at the beginning of the live, was just the power and sound image that made it look like a sound board. Audience recordings that boasted such closeness and reality with items at the time of 1996 were unparalleled.
As with the first day of Osaka, which will be released at the same time, the superb audience that does not fade even with a sound board. Rather, there may be more people who do not know the splendor of the “10 DAYS” master because the sound board has penetrated too much. DAT master of the legendary item that I want to recommend to such maniacs. Not to mention the realism unique to the audience, the balance between performance and singing is surprisingly wonderful!
1996年ペイジ・プラント来日公演の中では、これまたサウンドボードがお馴染みとなった感のある名古屋公演。むしろサウンドボード一択と言ってもおかしくない状況へ強烈な一打となった名盤『NAGOYA 1996 DAT MASTER』。この名盤こそ極上オーディエンスの良さをマニアに見直させる画期的なリリースとなったのですが、だからこそ再評価が必要だったのが名盤『10 DAYS』ボックス。1996年当時にリリースされた多くのアイテムを一掃させた歴史的なボックスセットが今なお色褪せない高音質であったことはこれまでのDATマスター・シリーズで証明されてきましたが、名古屋の『10 DAYS』マスターがまた素晴らしい。
そもそもこの日は日本公演が始まってからエスカレートしていたアコースティックな編成のレパートリーを軸としたセットリストが頂点を迎えた日。だからこそ『10 DAYS』マスターならではの繊細な音の広がりが最大限に活かされる結果にもなった訳ですが、実際ここで聞かれる2023版はさらにDATマスターならではの再現力を生かし切った仕上がりで、96年版と比べてのその違いは明らか。
ライブ中盤は特にアコースティック寄りな演奏の構成でまとめられており、いよいよ前年のアメリカやイギリスのステージでは考えられなかったような展開へと進化。それだけに今回のDATマスターを最新技術でCD化した威力は絶大。ここまで何度も触れてきた繊細さはもちろん、アコースティックな演奏の織り成す深みもマシマシ。改めて96年来日公演の中にあっても特異なセットリストであったことを素晴らしい音質と共に思い知らされることかと。
ショウの幕開けこそ定番「Heartbreaker」だったのですが、「Tangerine」が演奏されると雰囲気は一変。そこからいつも以上にアコースティックなアレンジや編成のレパートリーが立て続けに披露されるという。結果として96年の来日公演の中にあって特にマニアックなセットリストの一日だったのではないでしょうか。東京でもあれほどの変化を見せたペイジ・プラントではありましたが、この日はその極めつけと言っても過言ではない。それに何と言ってもここは名古屋。二人が揃ってこの地に降り立ったのはZEP1972年以来のこと。
となれば「Thank You」が演奏されるのは必然であった。それを知ってか、二人はしっかり同曲を披露してくれたのです。もちろん72年の時のような「さくら」こそ弾かれなかったものの、さすがにこの地での「Thank You」には重みがある。それが『10 DAYS』マスターならではの鮮やかな音質で聞けばいよいよ感動的。むしろサウンドボードよりも鮮やかに聞こえるのでは。さらに順序こそ違えど「The Song Remains The Same」に「The Rain Song」、さらには「Dancing Days」まで披露され、いよいよ1972年の名古屋にタイムスリップ。
そんな絶妙なセットリストのパートだけでなく、ハードな演奏でも『10 DAYS』マスターの素晴らしさは健在。この日はライブ序盤での披露となった「Custard Pie」でペイジが聞かせたギターソロなど、それこそサウンドボードかと見まごうばかりの迫力と音像。1996年当時のアイテムでこれほどまでの近さとリアリティを誇ったオーディエンス録音は他に類を見ないほどだったのです。
同時にリリースされる大阪初日同様、サウンドボードがあってもなお色褪せない極上オーディエンス。むしろ、あまりにサウンドボードが浸透してしまったせいで『10 DAYS』マスターの素晴らしさを知らない人の方が多くなってしまったかもしれません。そんなマニアにこそ推したい伝説のアイテムのDATマスター。オーディエンスならではの臨場感はもちろん、演奏や歌のバランスも驚くほど素晴らしい！
