Jimi Hendrix Experience / Royal Albert Hall 1969 2nd Night Complete / 3CD / Non Label
Royal Albert Hall, London, UK 24th February 1969
Jimi Hendrix Experience The LA Forum, which was a classic live sound source in 1969, has just been released, but their stage at this time was for a live album planned as a relay to the studio album following the masterpiece “ELECTRIC LADYLAND”. Several stages were recorded in multitrack. On the second day of the Royal Albert Hall, which started the recording for it, shooting was done for the purpose of releasing it as a movie.
However, this backfired, and RAH became a sound source that could not be released. There are many live performances where video recording contracts become complicated over time and cannot be released as software. The Beatles’ share stadium is a prime example. In recent years, although theatrical release has been realized, it has not led to a release from there.
The same is true for Jimi’s ’69 RAH, which cannot be released in software. Instead, it was only a one-night screening that was rented from RAH to commemorate the 50th anniversary.
On the contrary, it seems that the contract for each material of RAH was complicated from an early stage, and although the movie was completed early, there was no prospect of its release. While doing so, the sound source leaked out, and the boot appeared while Jimi was still alive. And after his death, it was so much that Jimi was unrelated to the record company.
In response to this situation, Jimi adopted “Little Wing” and “Voodoo Child” from RAH’s take when the famous live album “IN THE WEST” was released after his death, but deliberately credited the venue. I had to change it to San Diego and release it. As expected, this became a problem, and when the CD was reissued in 2011, it was replaced with a take on another day.
Given all this, you can understand that RAH was stuck in a filming contract and turned into a sound source that could never be released. After that, RAH’s take was barely released in the masterpiece compilation “THE JIMI HENDRIX CONCERTS” in the analog era, or the famous box “THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE” in the CD era, but it can not be released in full size.
Instead, the sound source was leaked early in the underground world, but in the latter half of the 1990s, Eric Burdon of Animals, who was close to Jimi, bought the copy master reel that was given to him by mail order only. Released in the form of -R. Of course, Jimi protested and the sale was withdrawn, but the version that was sold there became the base for the high-quality sound items that followed.
However, in recent years, the soundboard of February 18, the first show of RAH, has been discovered, and the interest of enthusiasts has shifted, resulting in an unexpected development in which the old classic 24th has been overlooked. Although the sound source on the 18th is valuable, the performance content and sound quality are overwhelming on the 24th. Also, Rattlesnake’s “SMASHING THE AMPS”, which was a relatively recent release, had a fairly flashy equalization, and rather the appearance of a new definitive version was craving.
“PRINCE ALBERT DOES NOT BITE THE TONGUE” that was circulating among traders as such a RAH best version. Not only is it a perfect multi-track stereo that can be officially released as it is, but the natural and warm sound quality of Bardon’s reel, which has not been subjected to any extra work, is exactly a flat transfer. Even if RAH is released in the future, the finish using the latest technology cannot be avoided, and in fact, “Little Wing” contained in the “THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE” box released at the beginning of the 21st century has a crisp texture. It had been mastered.
On that point, listening to “Little Wing” with this honest and warm sound quality is a rare masterpiece. It was fortunate that this song was performed in a truly RAH-like silence, and that it was recorded as a multi-track. After all, the LA Forum this time was an environment surrounded by hustle and bustle that not only Jimi but also Noel Redding had to tell everyone to sit down, so I decided to play the quiet song “Little Wing”. was near impossible.
In the first place, it’s been a long time since the stage was held in the UK, and since it was realized at RAH, the audience held their breath and watched every move. In addition to that, there was even a video shoot, but I didn’t even care about the existence of the shooting team, and I even felt like I was able to concentrate on the performance away from the madness of America.
As for the 24th, it was recorded in multi-track until the sound check, which tells us how the entire event of this day was recorded on the assumption that it would be released to the public. This part was also a monaural sound source that had been known for a long time through the TMOQ stamp cover “GOOD VIBES” LP, but a long version was discovered in the 90s.
In addition, although a stereo version was later unearthed, it was initially released with the gene dropped intentionally. “PRINCE ALBERT DOES NOT BITE THE TONGUE”, which was the basis of the live performance this time, disliked it and adopted a mono version, but still at that time Watchtower label’s “ROYAL ALBERT HALL SOUNDCHECK”, or Rattlesnake However, “THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL REHEARSALS” etc. were released, which managed to alleviate the gene drop stereo with equalization.
However, as a result of Jimi’s sound source network “ATM” finally distributing the stereo highest sound quality version under the title “EXPERIENCE”, enthusiasts around the world were stunned by the difference in sound quality. In other words, it was unlikely that there was a title that contained both the live performance and rehearsal in the best version. Besides, even though it was a rehearsal, it was only a recording, so “Hear My Train A-Comin’ (take 2)” is crisp, and Elvis’s “Hound Dog”, which has been tried many times, is also high tension. It is also attractive that there is no looseness that tends to be found in rehearsal sound sources.
In this way, the second day of RAH, the most important sound source of the ’69 experience, where you can listen to the performance and rehearsals in perfect multi-track stereo. Because the content and sound quality were perfect, I proudly named “Complete” in the title. Enjoy the second day of RAH 1969, a masterpiece of “static” paired with the aggressive “moving” LA Forum, with perfect sound quality to your heart’s content!
