The “CATFISH RISING” era, which has become a secret recording spot even for the long JETHRO TULL. Introducing a masterpiece live album that reveals the scene with the finest sound.
It was the “October 16, 1991 Zurich performance” that was imbued with this work. It is the transcendental audience recording. Speaking of “CATFISH RISING Tour”, there was a change from Martin Alcock to Andrew Giddings on the way, and the official live albums “IN CONCERT” and “A LITTLE LIGHT MUSIC” were left behind. The meaning will differ depending on the detailed schedule, so let’s first check the position of the show from the tour schedule.

This is the 1991/1992 JETHRO TULL. The member change happened in December 1991, when the tour was completed, and this work was before that. It was the 10th concert of “Europe # 2” that was held immediately after the album was released. Actually, the official live album “IN CONCERT” was also produced at the Hammersmith performance of “Europe # 2”, and this work was also a show eight days later.
This work, which was vacuum-packed at such a site, is a superb audience recording with “super” …, maybe. I’m sorry that I suddenly became bearish, but it’s a superb sound that is so far away from the audience that I really want to doubt my ears. As expected, it doesn’t feel as thick as the official board “IN CONCERT”, and the proof of audience recording is engraved on the tones such as the snare. However, the fine details, the clear atmosphere, and the close contact with each other are not defeated by the official album. All the beautifully separated instruments are vivid, but Ian Anderson’s vocals are especially amazing. Not only word by word of the lyrics, but also the nuances of each syllable are vivid, and you can understand the feeling of breathing flowing into the microphone. When I first heard it … No, even now when I listen to it, it’s a shocking sound that makes me think, “Maybe IN CONCERT’s outflow rough mix ?!”
The transcendental vivid sound depicts a full show that can be said to be the “complete version of the official IN CONCERT”. Of course, it is a separate performance, but the performance is very similar only to the latest show, and unlike the official work full of cuts, it is a full recording that penetrates all at once. Here, let’s organize the whole picture while comparing it with the official work.

… And it looks like this. It has been widely selected from a long career, but the new songs of “CATFISH RISING” are still valuable. Only “Rocks On The Road” was performed in the 21st century, but the others are only in the 90’s. In particular, “White Innocence” and “Doctor To My Disease” are tour-only songs that could not be heard even in “IN CONCERT”, and “Still Loving You Tonight” is an extremely rare song that has been played only one of the best.
Even so, it sounds great. It’s a live album with ridiculously good sound. JETHRO TULL in 1991 deepened its unique blues rock flavor while being far from the chart hit. It is a masterpiece that allows you to fully experience the precious number-filled show with superb sound. A two-disc set that surpasses the official version of the official version “IN CONCERT”, which had indigestion in about 53 minutes. Please enjoy yourself.

これが1991年／1992年のJETHRO TULL。メンバーチェンジが起きたのはツアーが一段落付いた1991年12月で、本作はその前。アルバム発売直後に行われた「欧州#2」の10公演目のあたるコンサートでした。実は公式ライヴアルバム『IN CONCERT』も「欧州#2」のハマースミス公演で制作されており、本作はその８日後のショウでもありました。
そんな現場を真空パックした本作は「超」付きの極上オーディエンス録音……です、たぶん。いきなり弱気になって申し訳ないのですが、本当にわが耳を疑いたくなるほど客録離れした極上サウンドなのです。さすがにオフィシャル盤『IN CONCERT』ほどの極太感はなく、スネアなどの音色にオーディエンス録音の証が刻まれてはいる。しかし、肝心のディテールの細かさや透き通った空気感、さらに距離のない密着感まで公式アルバムに負けていない。綺麗にセパレートしたすべての楽器が鮮やかなのですが、特に凄いのはイアン・アンダーソンのヴォーカル。歌詞の一語一語どころか一音節ごとのニュアンスまで鮮やかで、マイクに流れ込む呼吸感まで分かる。最初聞いた時は……いや、聴き込んだ現在でも「もしかしてIN CONCERTの流出ラフミックス?!」と思うほどの衝撃サウンドなのです。
その超絶ビビッド・サウンドで描かれるのは、「オフィシャルIN CONCERTの完全版」とでも言えるフルショウ。もちろん別公演ではあるのですが、直近のショウだけに演奏は酷似しており、カットだらけのオフィシャル作品と違って一気貫通のフル録音なのです。ここで、その全貌を公式作と比較しながら整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。長いキャリアから幅広くセレクトされていますが、やはり貴重なのは『CATFISH RISING』の新曲群。「Rocks On The Road」だけは21世紀にも演奏されましたが、他は90年代のみ。特に「White Innocence」「Doctor To My Disease」は『IN CONCERT』でも聴けなかったツアー限定曲ですし、「Still Loving You Tonight」に至っては指折り数えるほどしか演奏されていない激レア曲なのです。
それにしても凄いサウンド。とんでもなく音の良いライヴアルバムです。チャート・ヒットとは縁遠くなりながら、独自のブルースロック風味を深めていた1991年のJETHRO TULL。その貴重ナンバー山盛りなショウを超極上サウンドでフル体験できる大傑作です。約53分で消化不良だった公式盤『IN CONCERT』の歯がゆさを一気に晴らす公式超えの２枚組。どうぞ、たっぷりとお楽しみください。
