The last world tour of Jeff Beck’s life that I could not experience in Japan. The best video of the best masterpiece and topic is here.
This work was filmed at “The Woodlands Performance on September 25, 2022”. It is the super superb view audience shot. In 2022, the collaboration work “18” with Johnny Depp and the co-starring tour became a hot topic, but Depp is absent in this work. It was Jeff’s solo concert. This time, even those who do not usually reach out to the bootleg will be noticed, so let’s start with the whole view of the last tour.

This is an overview of our activities in 2022. Jeff Beck was his last tour. Basically Depp was also accompanying, but Depp did not appear on some dates due to schedule reasons. Especially “North America # 1” is the opening act of ZZ TOP, and Jeff participates in a normal style. The Woodlands performance of this work was the third performance of such “North America # 1”.
This work, which is a vacuum-packed version of such a show, is a superb view that is almost a one-shot professional shot. From the opening scene, it seems that you are shooting from the back of the first floor, but if you approach with a super zoom from there, Jeff’s hand and waist up will fill the screen. Moreover, thanks to the powerful zoom function of the latest equipment, even the fine details are super clear even if it is close to a fierce close-up. It goes without saying that every single guitar string and hair is beautiful, and even the pores on the arms are beautifully rendered.
Of course, the audio is as good as the visual beauty. The atmosphere of the scene is also a realistic audience sound, but its ringing is exquisite. In particular, the guitar has a mellow taste in the tone because it has a ringing sound, and the entanglement of each instrument does not mix because the outline is clear. This work is called “the best masterpiece” for the beauty of the image, but the sound is also superb enough to be established as a live album.
In addition, the camera work and editing are skillful. Basically, I follow Jeff up, but the sense of stability is amazing. The more aggressive the zoom, the more the angle tends to shift, but this work does not miss by placing Jeff in the middle. Of course, it is also the result of the anti-shake function of the latest equipment, but it is wonderful because it follows Jeff’s movements and habits to look ahead. I think this photographer has watched Jeff’s show many times.
Also, along with such skillful camera work, the editing enhances the work feel of this work. Actually, this work does not keep shooting, but cuts between songs significantly. From the experience of the show, I think that the atmosphere between songs is also important, but this work is daringly cut. By making each song stand alone like a PV, and by adding animation-processed inter-song telops, it gives it dignity as a video work.
A full show of Jeff, who was youthful until the end, is depicted with such artistic visual beauty. As mentioned above, this day was the opening of ZZ TOP. After Jeff’s solo stage, he made a guest appearance on the ZZ TOP stage as an encore. This work also includes the encore co-star part (not included in the gift board with the same title), so let’s organize the set together.

On the day of co-starring with Depp, vocal songs were arranged in the second half, but this work is the original instrumental set (co-starring encore with ZZ TOP is a vocal song). From “BLOW BY BLOW” to the final “18”, they have selected a wide variety of cover songs. In particular, Davy Spillane’s “Midnight Walker” and Robert Johnson’s cover “Me and the Devil Blues” are limited edition songs that will only be performed in 2022.
Jeff’s last visit to Japan was in February 2017. Although there was a gap due to the new corona pandemic, it should be coming soon … I think many people thought so. I never thought it would not come true in this way. This work will snuggle up to such a gap in the heart. I want to be present at the last music that Jeff arrived at … A masterpiece video that meets that wish. Now, it is one that I would like you to experience at this time.

そんな本作が撮影されたのは「2022年９月25日ザ・ウッドランズ公演」。その超絶景オーディエンス・ショットです。2022年はジョニー・デップとのコラボ作品『18』や共演ツアーが話題ともなりましたが、本作にデップは不在。ジェフ単独でのコンサートでした。今回ばかりは普段ブートレッグまで手を伸ばさない方も注目されるでしょうから、まずはラスト・ツアーの全景から始めましょう。

これが2022年の活動概要。ジェフ・ベック最後のツアーでした。基本的にはデップも同行していたのですが、スケジュールの都合なのか一部の日程でデップは出演しなかった。特に「北米#1」はZZ TOPのオープニング・アクトであり、ジェフにとって通常スタイルで参加。本作のザ・ウッドランズ公演は、そんな「北米#1」の３公演目にあたるコンサートでした。
そんなショウを真空パックした本作は、ほとんどワンカメ・プロショットな超絶景。開演シーンからすると１階席奥から撮影しているようなのですが、そこからググッと超ズームで迫るとジェフの手元やウェストアップが画面いっぱいに大写しになる。しかも最新機材の強力なズーム機能のおかげで猛烈アップに寄っても微細部まで超鮮明。ギター弦や髪の１本１本まで美しいのは当たり前、それこそ腕の毛穴までリアルな肌の質感までもが見事に描き出されているのです。
もちろん、音声もそんな映像美に負けていない。現場の雰囲気もリアルなオーディエンス・サウンドではありますが、その鳴りが絶妙。特にギターは鳴りがあるからこそトーンに甘露のうま味を湛えており、輪郭がクッキリしているからこそ各楽器の絡みこそすれ混じり合わない。本作はあくまで映像の美しさで「最高傑作」と称されているわけですが、音声もライヴアルバムとして成立するほどに極上です。
さらに、カメラワークや編集も巧み。基本的にはジェフをアップで追いまくるのですが、その安定感がスゴい。ズームが果敢なほどアングルがズレがちになるものですが、本作はジェフをド真ん中に据えて逃さない。もちろん、最新機材の手ブレ防止機能の賜でもあるわけですが、それ以上にジェフの動きやクセを先読みするように追っていくから素晴らしい。この撮影者、相当何度もジェフのショウを観ているのではないでしょうか。
また、そんな巧みのカメラワークと並んで本作の作品感を高めているのが編集。実は、本作は撮りっぱなしではなく、曲間を大幅にカットしている。ショウの体験感からすると曲間も大事な雰囲気とは思いますが、本作はあえてカット。１曲１曲をＰＶのように独立させ、アニメーション処理の曲間テロップも付すことで映像作品としての品格を持たせているのです。
そんなアーティスティックな映像美で画かれるのは、最後まで若々しかったジェフのフルショウ。前述の通り、この日はZZ TOPのオープニング。ジェフの単独ステージの後、ZZ TOPのステージでもアンコールに客演しました。本作は、そのアンコール共演パートも収録しています（同タイトルのギフト盤には未収録です）ので、合わせてセットを整理してみましょう。

……と、このようになっています。デップとの共演日では後半にヴォーカル曲を配していましたが、本作は本来のインスト・セット（ZZ TOPとの共演アンコールはヴォーカル曲）。『BLOW BY BLOW』から最終作『18』まで幅広くセレクトしており、カバー曲も多彩。特にデイヴィ・スピラーン作の「Midnight Walker」とロバート・ジョンソンのカバー「Me and the Devil Blues」は、2022年にしか演奏していない限定曲です。
ジェフ最後の来日は2017年２月。新型コロナ・パンデミックもあって間が空いたものの、そろそろ来てくれるはず……そう思われていた方も多いのではないでしょうか。それがまさか、こんな形で叶わなくなるとは。本作は、そんな心の隙間に寄り添ってくれるのです。ジェフが行き着いた最後の音楽に居合わせたい……その願いを応えてくれる傑作映像。今、この時だからこそ体験していただきたい１枚です。
