Released at the end of 2002, Beck Bootleg’s strongest set title “Rough And Ready Reel Masters”, which surprised fans all over the world, will be revived. The sound source of the 5-disc box set, which is a direct CD of 5 reel masters that recorded the process leading to the final mix of the album “Rough And Ready”, which is said to have been owned by the late Cozy Powell. Recording time is 79 minutes and 35 seconds. Since the silence tape noise between songs is not deleted, all the necessary parts are recorded. In this board, the original sound is affected by the noise at the beginning of the first song Got The Feeling, which seems to have occurred when transferred from the reel in 2002, and the noise scattered in the “BASF tape” track of Reel # 5. removed as little as possible. You can enjoy 19 tracks with the best quality at once in reel order (by date indicated)! In the original box, as well as the sound, what surprised Beck collectors around the world was the text added to the outer box of the reel and the dance of the British CBS A&R head discovered in “Reel # 1”. ・Of course, the letters addressed to Loggins are also reprinted on the jacket innerwear. ★This is a review summary of beatleg magazine vol.31 (February 2003 issue) at the time of the original 5CD BOX release. It’s a great analysis and explanation, so I’ll write it here for reference.

An astonishing sound source was discovered. It is the final mix of “ROUGH AND READY” announced in October 1971 by the second Jeff Beck Group. Five reel masters were pressed as they are on five CDs, so although the recording time for each is short, it delivers a dynamic sound that you can’t imagine from 30 years ago. Although it is said that the sound quality has not been modified at all when making the CD, the sound is clearly better than the official CD. Bright Beck’s guitar, attacking Cozy drums, clear Max’s piano, powerful Clive’s bass, and dynamic Bob’s vocals. It can be said that the true form of “ROUGH AND READY” has become clear.

“Reel 1”
The engineer on the album is Phil Brown, but here are three “Got The Feeling” mixes by Jim Green. Got The Feeling 1, which starts with Cozy’s count, has another take of vocals, some lyrics are different, and the rhythm guitar is also another take. Got The Feeling 2 is close to a 7-inch take, but the guitar that can only be heard here is also overdubbed. The ending is long, and you can listen to Bob’s shout at the end. Got The Feeling 3 is almost an album take.

“Reel 2”
Situation, I’ve Been Used, and Short Business have a slightly different balance of sound than the album take, and it seems to be more vivid. The surprise song is the completely unreleased July 13th. It is a groovy instrumental centered on the piano, and it seems to be Max’s song. Although the guitar has only riffs and no solos, the appearance of unreleased songs at this time is shocking.

“Reel 3”
Got The Feeling is close to album take, and Situation seems to be 4ch take. Short Business has a guitar on the front and vocals are very clear. I’ve Been Used is a short version with a little guitar overdub in the intro and a quick fade-out. This take is included on the UK reissue LP.

“Reel 4”
Although the sound balance is different, it is close to the album take except for July 13th.

“Reel 5”
As the jacket says “HIGH-LEVEL”, it is recorded with a wonderful sound. Short Business has a different vocal take, and I’ve Been Used is a short version. Looking at the date on Reel 5, we can imagine that it was mastered by another engineering team after submitting the master to the record company. At that time, it is disappointing to think that the released “ROUGH AND READY” had such a sound quality. “Got The Feeling” and “Situation” that can be heard at the original pitch, valuable information described in the case, unreleased “July 13th”, and sound quality. Beck fans, as well as rock fans who have listened to “ROUGH AND READY”, should definitely listen to it.

First of all, along with this letter is the stereo master of “Freezing on Fire”, now called “Got The Feeling”. Please don’t let this tape go anywhere by mistake.

2002年末にリリースされ、世界中のファンを驚愕させた、ベック・ブートレッグ史上最強のセットタイトル「Rough And Ready Reel Masters」が蘇ります。故コージー・パウエルが所有していたとされる、アルバム「Rough And Ready」のファイナル・ミックスに至る過程を収録したリール・マスター５本をダイレクトにCD化した５枚組ボックスセットの音源を１枚のCDに収録。こういった形で所有したかった！と思っていたファンも多かったのではないでしょうか。海外のブートレッグでは５枚のCDを１枚にコピーしたタイトルが10年程前に出回っていましたが、５枚をそのままCDに収めると80分を超えてしまうため、それには一曲を外した18曲が収録されていましたが、本盤では曲間の完全な無音部分を削除する事で、全ての19曲を完全収録しています。収録時間は79分35秒。曲間の無音テープノイズは削除してないので、必要な部分は全て収録されています。本盤では2002年のリールからトランスファーされたときに生じたと思われる１曲目のGot The Feelingの冒頭ノイズやReel #5の「BASFテープ」トラックに散見されていたノイズ等、全てを原音に影響が無い程度に除去。ベストなクオリティでの19トラックをリールの順番（表記されていた日付ごと）で、一気に楽しむことができます！オリジナルのボックスで、その音同様に、世界のベックコレクターを驚かせたのはリールの外箱に書き加えられていたテキストや、「リール＃１」の中から発見されたイギリスCBSのA&Rヘッドのダン・ロギンズ宛てのレター等も勿論、ジャケインナーに復刻。 コンパクトな形状ながら、音・装丁ともに、リニューアルに相応しい１枚に仕上がっています。

それでは久しぶりにあの５枚のリールに封じ込められていた音を再生してみましょう。改めて驚かされるのが、その音の鮮度、クリアーさ、分離の良さ、そしてコージーのドラムの録りに代表されるパンチの効いた音の鋭さです。ヴァージョン云々の前に、これまで聴いてきたオフィシャル「ROUGH AND READY」とは何だったのか、ということを考えさせられるタイトルであると言えるでしょう。特にオフィシャルでは、Reel 1に収録されているJim Green Mixのリールに付随していたレターの指示書にあるとおりに、速度とピッチを落として収録されてしまったGot The FeelingとSituationが初めて、元の状態のテイクで聴くことができます。JIM GREEN MIX ３テイクひとつとってみても、、例えばMIX1はコージーの肉声カウントから始まるとか、ボーカルテイクが全く違うとか、MIX2はハンドクラップを大きめに録音したり、ピアノソロの前のジェフのスライドを消し忘れてるとか、最後のボブの叫びは初登場（Trk2）であるとか、様々な発見があります。ただ、そういったオフィシャルとの違いを細かく語る以前に、一聴した誰もが、あまりに鮮烈なサウンドとダイナミズムに圧倒されるでしょう。ぜひぜひ、この1971年夏にミックスされた鮮烈な音像に身をゆだね、ロックの真髄に触れて頂きたいと思います。本セットの登場で初めて世に出た「JULY 13TH」と言うタイトルの未発表インストナンバーは本タイトルの目玉のひとつ。未発表曲が殆どないべックの衝撃の発掘音源でした（Reel #2には「Rough Mix」と表記されており、Reel #4にはより完成されたテイクが収録されています）。また「HIGH-LEVEL」と称されるReel #5は、オフィシャル盤とは比較にならない真のダイナミズムに満ち溢れた、まさに強烈極まりないサウンドで録音されており、凄まじい迫力が体感できる、まさに必聴テイクです。I’VE BEEN USEDはこのトラックのみベースがファズがかかってない、しかもややショートバージョンです。（いずれにせよ、このReel 5のHeads（Short Business）や Raynes Park Blues（Max’s Tune）のノイズが綺麗に消えているのは特筆すべきアドバンテージです。）本作は、今もってべックの研究用アイテムとしては世界最高峰のひとつであることは言うまでもありません。名盤「ROUGH AND READY」の真髄に触れることのできる決定盤音源集。

驚異的音源が発掘された。第二期ジェフ・ベック・グループが1971年10月に発表した「ROUGH AND READY」のファイナル・ミックスである。５本のリール・マスターをそのまま５枚のCDにプレスしたので、それぞれの収録時間は短いものの、３０年前のモノとは思えない程のダイナミックなサウンドを届けてくれる。CD化にあたり、音質的には全く手を加えていないとのことなのに、はっきり言ってオフィシャルCDよりも音が良い。ブライトなベックのギター、アタック感のあるコージーのドラム、クリアーなマックスのピアノ、パワフルなクライヴのベース、そしてダイナミックなボブのヴォーカル。「ROUGH AND READY」の本当の姿が明らかになったと言えるだろう。

「Reel 1」
アルバムでのエンジニアはフィル・ブラウンだが、ここではジム・グリーンによるミックスの「Got The Feeling」が３つ収録されている。コージーのカウントから始まるGot The Feeling 1はヴォーカルが別テイクで歌詞も一部違っており、リズム・ギターも別テイクである。Got The Feeling 2は７インチのテイクに近いが、ここでしか聴けないギターもオーヴァーダブされている。エンディングも長く、最後にはボブのシャウトも聴ける。Got The Feeling 3は殆どアルバムテイク。

「Reel 2」
Situation、I’ve Been Used、Short Businessはアルバムテイクとは音のバランスが少し違っており、生々しさが増しているように思える。驚きの曲が完全未発表のJuly 13thだ。ピアノ中心のグル―ヴィなインストで、マックスの曲だと思われる。ギターはリフのみでソロは無いものの、この時期の未発表曲の登場は衝撃的である。

「Reel 3」
Got The Feelingはアルバムテイクに近く、Situationは4chテイクと思われる。Short Businessはギターが前面に出ており、ヴォーカルも非常にクリア。I’ve Been Used はイントロにギターを少しオーヴァーダブしてフェイドアウトを早くしたショート・ヴァージョン。このテイクはUK盤の再発LPに収録されている。

「Reel 4」
音のバランスは違うものの、July 13th以外はアルバムテイクに近い。

「Reel 5」

ジェフとグループの間でちょっとした意見の対立が起きてます。ジェフはこれは継続的なグループのレコードだと考えているようです。過去にこのグループは”Jeff Beck Group”と呼ばれていました。ジェフは、今回は”Beck Group”という名前にしたいと考えてます。ここは、お互いの妥協が必要ですね。彼はこのアルバムが”Jeff Beck”のアルバム、と呼ばれることを望んでおらず、ジャケットに彼のソロの写真が使われるアイデアにも反対してます。彼は４人のメンバーの写真を表カバーに使うアイデアを持っており、フロントはイラストなどの似顔絵風に、その場合、べックの写真はバックカバーに使われるでしょう。別のアイデアとしては、表紙には５人の男をフィーチャーし、例えば、四分割したそれぞれにに４人のメンバーを入れ、ジェフは真ん中に置く考えもあります。しかし・・・（手紙はここで切れてます）
