This week, IRON MAIDEN’s premier live album “DEFINITIVE MUSIC MACHINE 1979 (Zodiac 329)” appeared before debut. A super rare early sound source collection commemorating such a weekend is a gift release decision. The press CD “DEFINITIVE MUSIC MACHINE 1979”, which is a key feature of its name, is the highest record in 1979 as its name suggests, but this theme’s theme goes back further in 1977. Paul Diano has not participated yet, it is a live and rehearsal of the era when Dennis Wilcock (!) Was singing the second generation singer of vision.
Originally, IRON MAIDEN was formed on December 25, 1975 (there are also materials to be in May). Originally neither Paul Diano nor Dave Murray, Paul Marino Day (the first singer), Terry Lance, Dave Sullivan and so on, various people switched. However, what has been considered the oldest record of MAIDEN so far is “THE SOUNDHOUSE TAPES” of December 31, 1978 recording, already in the third Diano era. That such BC “before Diano” recording was not known at all.
Recently, however, the recording of BC was discovered. Although it is still a fragmentary sample sound source yet, it is now possible to hear the IRON MAIDEN sung by Dennis Willcock, the second generation singer who was unknown. This work is a summary of such BC recording. Since it can be roughly divided into two broadly, let’s introduce each.

【First half of 1977: Murray & Bob Sawyer era】
First of all, it is a live audience recording. You can listen to “Prowler” full playing and fragmentally “Floating (original song of Purgatory)” “Charlotte The Harlot”. It is only thanks to being able to listen to only a rare rare sound source … … and, in fact, the clear sound which is not so much is wonderful. Perhaps it seems to be a close contact feeling of the club, but it is much better than the hall recording after major debut.
It sounds good enough to speak long, but the true dread is inside. At the very beginning, the timing of member change is also unclear, but the current men who are known by mania’s verification are as follows.

The name is Ron Matthews who was a founding member along with Harris and his eyes dazzled, and it seems to be fainting to the original song “Floating” which does not resemble “Purgatory”, but the shock is still Wilcox’s vocal. It is not as intense as Diano, it is not high tone like Dickson. Performance famous for kissing meal and sword (in addition to artwork) is also a famous genuine British voices. Strongly speaking, it is somewhat Phil Moggy, and it is actually like Steve Harris.
“Prowler” that you can enjoy the singing voice carefully is the biggest treasure of this work. To tell the truth, this is the only thing that excavates the full performance of a whole song in 1977. It is a vertex take that you can taste the Willcock era MAIDEN for about 5 minutes.

今週は、デビュー前IRON MAIDENの最高峰ライヴアルバム『DEFINITIVE MUSIC MACHINE 1979（Zodiac 329）』が登場。そんなウィークエンドを記念する激レアな超初期音源集がギフト・リリース決定です。その目玉となるプレスCD『DEFINITIVE MUSIC MACHINE 1979』は、その名の通り1979年の最高峰記録ですが、本作のテーマはさらに遡った1977年。まだポール・ディアノも参加しておらず、幻の２代目シンガー：デニス・ウィルコック（！）が歌っていた時代のライヴとリハーサルなのです。
そもそも、IRON MAIDENが結成されたのは1975年12月25日（５月とする資料もあります）。当初はポール・ディアノもデイヴ・マーレイもおらず、ポール・マリノ・デイ（初代シンガー）、テリー・ランス、デイヴ・サリヴァン等々、さまざまな人物が入れ替わっていきました。しかし、これまでMAIDEN最古の記録とされてきたのは1978年12月31日録音の『THE SOUNDHOUSE TAPES』であり、すでに３代目のディアノ時代。そうした紀元前な“ディアノ以前”録音は、一切知られてこなかったのです。
ところが、最近になって紀元前の録音が発掘。未だほとんどが断片的なサンプル音源ではあるものの、未知であった２代目シンガー：デニス・ウィルコックが歌うIRON MAIDENを耳にすることができるようになったのです。本作は、そんな紀元前録音をまとめたもの。大きく２つに大別できますので、それぞれご紹介していきましょう。

【1977年上半期：マーレイ＆ボブ・ソーヤー時代のライヴ】
まず登場するのは、ライヴのオーディエンス録音。フル演奏の「Prowler」と、断片的ながら「Floating（Purgatoryの原曲）」「Charlotte The Harlot」が聴けます。激レア音源だけに聴けるだけありがたい……と思いきや、実際にはそれどころではないクリア・サウンドが素晴らしい。恐らくはクラブならではの密着感だと思われますが、メジャー・デビュー後のホール録音よりもずっと良いくらいです。
長々と語っても良いほどのサウンドなのですが、真の凄味は中身。超初期はメンバーチェンジのタイミングも不明瞭なのですが、現在マニアの検証で判明している当時のメンツは以下の通り。

・ロン・“レベル”・マシューズ（ドラム）

これは1976年11月から1977年６月まで約半年ほど続いていたラインナップで、本作のライヴ録音も1977年の上半期だったとされています。ハリスと共に創設メンバーだったロン・マシューズの名前に目が眩み、「Purgatory」と似ても似つかない原曲「Floating」に卒倒しそうになりますが、やはり衝撃なのはウィルコックのヴォーカル。ディアノほど激しくなく、ディッキソンのようにハイトーンでもない。KISSめいたメイクと剣をくわえて血のりを吐くパフォーマンスが有名（アートワークもその写真）ですが、その歌声は愁いを帯びた純正ブリティッシュ・ヴォイス。強いて言えば、ややフィル・モグっぽくもあり、実にスティーヴ・ハリス好みです。
その歌声がじっくり楽しめる「Prowler」こそが本作最大のお宝。実のところ、1977年で丸１曲のフル演奏が発掘されているのはこれだけ。約５分間にわたってウィルコック時代MAIDENをじっくりと味わえる頂点テイクなのです。

【1977年下半期：正式キーボーディスト入りのリハーサル】
その後、ハリスとウィルコック以外のメンバーが総入れ替え。1977年８月から1978年２月まで続いたラインナップが以下です。

・バリー・“サンダースティック”・パーキンス（ドラム）

後の盟友マーレイが離脱し、SAMSONで有名になる覆面ドラマー：サンダースティックが参加。さらにツインギターでさえなく、世にも珍しいギター＆キーボード体制のIRON MAIDENが誕生したのです。このラインナップで発掘されたのはライヴではなくリハーサル。サンダースティックが録音したものと言われ、それぞれ１分弱の断片ながらサウンドボードなさがらの極上サウンドで６曲分が聴けます。各曲とも数十秒ずつではあるものの、その中身の濃厚ぶりは超絶。電子音のようなフレーズが奇妙な「Sanctuary」「Wrathchild」、ピアノがどこかFACESっぽくさえある「Another Life」、ウィルコックのウェット・ヴォイスが映える「Strange World」「Charlotte The Harlot」、完成形とはちょっと違うリフが微笑ましくもある「Iron Maiden」……。ロックの場合、幻のメンバーと言ってもよくよく聴いても違いが分からないケースも多々ありますが、本作は一聴して分かる。プリミティヴでありながら鍵盤やアレンジを色々と試していた超初期だからこその面白さが満載なのです（一説によると、サンダースティックがこのリハーサルの完全録音を所有しているそうですが……ぜひ公開して頂きたいッ！）。

40年の時空を飛び越えて登場した秘宝たち。「Prowler」以外はあくまで断片ですし、トータルでも約11分。しかし、その面白さは特濃です。デニス・ウィルコックの歌声、創設の一員ロン・マシューズのビート、キーボーディスト入りのアンサンブル、メタル以前のロック色豊かなアレンジ……。これまで口伝とファミリツリーの中から想像するしかなかった音楽が、ついに“音”で味わえる。IRON MAIDEN最古の記録を大幅に更新した１枚。ぜひ、この機会にお楽しみください。
