Hero Ronnie James Dio The HEAVEN & HELL project, which was the last glory. The new treasure live album is a new excavation.
It is “May 18, 2007 Colombia performance” that is imbued with such a work. It is the best audience recording. The HEAVEN & HELL project was active for three years intermittently until 2009, when Ronnie collapsed, but the most active was in 2007, the first year. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s take a look back at the project’s activities and confirm the position of the show.

This is the whole picture of the HEAVEN & HELL project. The Colombian performance of this work was the 31st performance of “North America # 1”, which was also the biggest leg at the beginning of the activity. The official work “LIVE FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL” was also produced from this “North America # 1”, but this work was also a concert about a month and a half later.
This work recorded at such a show is a superb audience recording. The master was recently excavated, but he worked on the modern prestigious “Krw_co”. It is a brand that was directly transferred from the original DAT master. And the sound is just right for the prestigious eyeglasses. It must be an audience recording that also sucks in the voice of a close conversation, but the essential performance sound is super clear to the finest part with zero distance and close contact. It’s a terrible thing to go on the so-called “sound board” on the ground.
The awesomeness was probably due to the venue. The site, “Merry Weather Post Pavilion,” is a huge venue with a capacity of about 20,000 people, but what is important is that there are no walls. There is a ceiling above the stage and the upcoming arena seats, but the three sides are wide open and no sound is reflected. However, that alone does not explain the super vivid sound of this work. It’s a guess from here, but maybe you’re recording by pointing the microphone directly at the PA tower installed for the distant seats. The distant seats at this venue are completely outdoor specifications without even the ceiling, and many spectators open their seats to watch. What’s more, the spectators who sucked in are not as frenzied as in the front seats, but rather as if they were calling to a distant stage. This work is an ultra-tight sound that can only be thought of as a zero-reverberation environment with no ceiling.
What is drawn with such a superb sound is a full show full of joy that has regained its glory. Let’s organize the set here as well.

… And it looks like this. Roughly speaking, the style of “LIVE FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL” without “Lonely Is the Word”. Often people prefer more than less, but the fun of music is not always the correct answer. It’s a pity that there aren’t many precious songs, but probably because of that, the flow of the show becomes tight, and the performance sounds tight.
And the dignified mood is wonderful. As mentioned above, the “Merry Weather Post Pavilion” is a semi-outdoor venue, and it’s almost a festival in the back. Burning fans rushed forward and swelled like a distant mountain noise, and the mood of the autumn festival was near. The mixed mood with a sense of perspective perfectly depicts the atmosphere unique to a huge venue, and the performance that dominates all of it has a big feeling.
This open-minded on-site mood is absolutely impossible in the late DIO, which had become a club scale. How was the HEAVEN & HELL project desired by the world and added to Ronnie’s later years? This work is not only an excellent live music album, but also a document album that allows you to experience the scene at that time. A new excavation that you can enjoy with the best sound up to such a sense of the times. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.
★ The best audience recording of “May 18, 2007 Colombia performance”. It is a brand name transferred from the Omoto DAT master excavated by the prestigious “Krw_co”, and it is super clear to the fine part with zero distance and close contact. Probably because of the semi-outdoor venue without walls, the vivid performance sound with no echo is awesome to go on the “sound board” on the ground. The set that summarizes the famous songs of the Ronnie era is wonderful, and Ronnie who makes the big venue after a long time is also energetic. It is a new masterpiece of a live album that you can enjoy with the best sound even to the mood full of openness unique to the semi-outdoors.

そんな本作に吹き込まれているのは「2007年５月18日コロンビア公演」。その極上オーディエンス録音です。HEAVEN & HELLプロジェクトはロニーが倒れる2009年まで断続的に３年間活動しましたが、もっとも活発だったのは初年の2007年でした。良い機会でもありますので、ここでプロジェクトの活動全景を振り返り、ショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これがHEAVEN & HELLプロジェクトの全体像。本作のコロンビア公演は、活動初期にして最大レッグでもあった「北米#1」の31公演目でした。この「北米#1」からは公式作『LIVE FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL』も制作されましたが、本作はその約１ヶ月半後にあたるコンサートでもありました。
そんなショウで記録された本作は、極上のオーディエンス録音。最近になって発掘されたマスターなのですが、手掛けたのは現代の名門「Krw_co」。大元のDATマスターからダイレクトにトランスファーされた銘品なのです。そして、そのサウンドは名門の流石お眼鏡に適うだけはある。間近な会話声も吸い込んだオーディエンス録音に違いないのですが、肝心の演奏音はゼロ距離・ド密着で微細部まで超鮮明。いわゆる「まるでサウンドボード」を地で行く凄まじさなのです。
その凄みは、恐らく会場が原因。現場となった“メリーウェザー・ポスト・パビリオン”は約２万人収容の巨大な会場なのですが、重要なのは壁がない事。ステージや間近なアリーナ席の頭上に天井こそありますが、三方は大きく開けて音が反射しないのです。しかし、それだけでは本作の超ビビッド・サウンドは説明が付かない。ここからは推測ですが、恐らく遠方席用に設置されたＰＡ塔へダイレクトにマイクを向けて録音しているのではないでしょうか。この会場の遠方席は天井すらない完全野外仕様でして、シートを広げて観る観客も多い。しかも、吸い込んだ観客のノリが前方席のような狂乱ではなく、遠いステージに呼びかけるようなのどかさがある。本作は、そんな天井ナシの反響ゼロ環境としか思えない超タイト・サウンドなのです。
そんな極上サウンドで描かれるのは、再び栄光を取り戻した歓喜溢れるフルショウ。ここでそのセットも整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。ざっくばらんに言って『LIVE FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL』から「Lonely Is the Word」を抜いたスタイル。往々にして少ないよりは多い方が好まれるものですが、必ずしもそれが正解とは限らないのが音楽の面白さ。貴重曲が少ないのは残念なものの、そのせいかショウの流れがタイトになり、演奏もグッと締まって聞こえるのです。
そして、威風堂々としたムードが素晴らしい。前述したように、“メリーウェザー・ポスト・パビリオン”は半野外な会場でして、後方ではほとんどフェス状態。燃えに燃えるファンが前方に押し寄せて遠くの山鳴りのように盛り上がり、近くはノンビリした秋祭りムード。その遠近感ある混在ムードが巨大会場ならではの雰囲気を見事に描き出しており、そのすべてを支配する演奏に大物感が宿っているのです。
この開放感たっぷりの現場ムードは、クラブ規模になっていた後期DIOでは絶対にあり得ないもの。いかにHEAVEN & HELLプロジェクトが世界から望まれ、ロニーの晩年に華を添えていたのか。本作は、単に優れた生演奏の音楽アルバムというだけでなく、そんな当時を肌感覚で現場体験できるドキュメントアルバムでもあるのです。そんな時代感まで丸ごと極上サウンドで楽しめる新発掘。どうぞ、心ゆくまでお楽しみください。
