GENESIS of the “DUKE” era, which was shining with pride as progressive rock, while evolving into catchy. The highest quality version of the representative video ever appears.
The representative video was filmed at the “Lyceum Theater” performance on May 7, 1980. It is a multi-camera pro shot when appearing on the famous program “OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST”. At that time, GENESIS was in the early stages of solo activities. In 1979 Tony Banks made his solo debut early with “A CURIOUS FEELING”, and in 1980 released Mike Rutherford’s “SMALLCREEP’S DAY”. Furthermore, Phil Collins also embarks on “FACE VALUE” with Hugh Pajam. First of all, let’s look back on the schedule of 1980, which was such a turning point, and check the position of this work.

This is GENESIS in 1980. Although it was a world tour, it was only held in three countries: the UK, the US, and Canada. Normally, a vast US tour would be the main place, but in the case of “DUKE Tour”, the home country of England is the main one. The thorough carpet bombing of more than 40 performances has been since the early 70’s when it was a fledgling, and you can see how the popularity of the home country at that time was tremendous. Of course, there are many masterpieces archived at our shop just for that big tour. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s organize the collection according to the schedule.

The above is an overview of the UK tour. The Lyceum Theater performance of this work was the final stage, the second from the end. Speaking of “Lyceum in 1980”, it is already a symbol of “DUKE Tour”. Two nights of continuous performances on “May 6th and 7th” were held, and it is a large classic that has produced many masterpieces such as sound board albums and various professional shots from both days. Among them, this work contains “OLD GRAY WHISTLE TEST version of the second day video”. It is the highest peak update board.
Its true identity is a digital rebroadcast aired on the prestigious “BBC FOUR” this year. It has been broadcast many times only for large standard images, but it is more beautiful than any of them. The image quality / sound quality broadcasted / recorded without going through analog at all can be said to be the station master itself, and it is vivid and clear as if it was taken recently. これが1980年のGENESIS。一応ワールドツアーではあるものの、開催されたのは英国・米国・カナダの３ヵ国のみでした。普通であれば広大な全米ツアーがメインになるところですが、“DUKE Tour”の場合は母国イギリスがメイン。40公演以上という徹底的な絨毯爆撃は駆け出しだった70年代初期以来のことで、いかに当時の母国人気が凄まじかったのかが分かります。もちろん、それだけのビッグ・ツアーだけに当店でも数々の名作でアーカイヴ。良い機会でもありますので、そのコレクションも日程で整理しておきましょう。

以上が英国ツアーの概要。本作のライシアム劇場公演は最後から２つ目という最終盤でした。「1980年のライシアム」と言えば、もはや“DUKE Tour”の象徴。「５月６日・７日」の二夜連続公演が行われ、両日からサウンドボード・アルバムや各種プロショットなど、多数の名作を生み出してきた定番中の大定番です。その中で本作に収められているのは「２日目映像のOLD GREY WHISTLE TEST版」。その最高峰更新盤なのです。
その正体は、今年になって名門“BBC FOUR”で放映されたデジタル再放送。大定番映像だけに幾度も放送されてきましたが、そのどれよりも美しい。アナログを一切経由せずに放送・録画された画質／音質は局マスターそのものと言って良く、まるでつい最近撮影されたかのようにビビッドで鮮明なのです。と言いますか、マスターそのものだとしても美しすぎる。確証はありませんが、もしかしたら単に局マスターをデジタル放送しているのではなく、デジタル・リマスターで磨き直しているのかも知れない……そんな妄想にまで駆られる映像美なのです。
ただし、映像美は過去最高ではあっても収録時間はそうはいかない。あくまでも「OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST放送版」であり、ショウの完全収録とはほど遠いのです。では、どんな曲が楽しめるのか。最後に整理しておきましょう。
