GENESIS in the Ray Wilson era is a singular point where the feeling of black history can no longer be wiped out. The superb professional shot is here.
This work was shot at “January 31, 1998 Katowice performance (Poland)”. That multi-camera pro shot. In 1996, Phil Collins announced his withdrawal, and GENESIS at the time when it was said that “and two people remained” released “CALLING ALL STATIONS”. It is also known that many professional shots were left on the tour betting on a comeback, perhaps because they also put effort into promotion, but this work is one of the earliest. First of all, let’s check the position of the show from the schedule at that time in order to know the situation.

This is the whole picture of “CALLING ALL STATIONS TOUR”. Initially, a large-scale North American tour was planned immediately after the album was released, but it was canceled due to poor tickets. Although the venue was reduced in size and set again, it was canceled again, and as a result, it was only the 1998 European Tour with a new year. The Katowice performance of this work was the 4th concert, which is the start dash.
This work that recorded such a show is just the best professional shot. The video itself is one of the standard videos known from that time, but this work is the highest peak version. It was not a TV broadcast at that time, but a DVD version of what was digitally rebroadcast in 2011 with zero deterioration. For that reason, the image quality and sound quality are perfect master quality, and the screen ratio that was “4: 3” at that time has evolved to “16: 9”. Even now, 22 years after the live performance and 9 years after the broadcast, it is a visual beauty that can only be called “perfect official class”.
Everything seems perfect, but in fact this work has the only and biggest drawback. It’s not a full show. The digital rebroadcast is an excerpt, and the four songs “No Son Of Mine,” “Turn It On Again,” “Throwing It All Away,” and “I Can’t Dance” that were performed on the day were cut. Still, you can still enjoy GENESIS during the Wilson era for about two hours. It’s also a good opportunity, so let’s organize the contents here.

…… And it looks like this. Naturally, the “CALLING ALL STATIONS” number was played only on this tour, and even in the classics, it was re-dyed by Wilson. Not only in the pop trio era, but also in the prog era, you can enjoy a peculiar version of a group of famous songs that gives a bird’s-eye view of your career in 2 hours.
“The most beautiful Wilson era GENESIS image in the world” realized by a digital rebroadcast master with zero deterioration. Of course, it was an era when I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable, but definitely the level of music and performance was extremely high. That’s why it’s interesting, and I also want a live work that is an “official substitute.” This work is a piece that heals the dryness. Please fully enjoy the one page of GENESIS, which is unusual but certainly existed, with this most beautiful work in history.

今や黒歴史の感も拭いきれない特異点、レイ・ウィルソン時代のGENESIS。その超極上プロショットが登場です。
そんな本作が撮影されたのは「1998年１月31日カトヴィツェ公演（ポーランド）」。そのマルチカメラ・プロショットです。1996年にフィル・コリンズが脱退を表明し、「そして２人が残った」と言われた当時のGENESISは『CALLING ALL STATIONS』をリリース。再起を賭けたツアーはプロモーションにも力を入れたのかプロショットが多く残された事でも知られているわけですが、本作はその中でも初期にあたる。まずは、その状況を知る意味でも当時のスケジュールからショウのポジションを確かめてみましょう。

これが“CALLING ALL STATIONS TOUR”の全体像。当初はアルバム発売直後に大規模な北米ツアーが予定されていましたが、チケット不振によりキャンセル。会場の規模を小さくして再度設定されるも再びキャンセルとなり、その結果、年の改まった1998年の欧州ツアーだけとなりました。本作のカトヴィツェ公演は、その中でもスタートダッシュにあたる４公演目のコンサートでした。
そんなショウを記録した本作は、まさに極上のプロショット。映像自体は当時から知られる定番映像の１つですが、本作はその最高峰版。当時のテレビ放送ではなく、2011年になってデジタル再放送されたものを劣化ゼロでDVD化したものなのです。それだけに画質も音質も完全無欠なマスター・クオリティで、当時「4:3」だった画面比も「16:9」に進化。ライヴ本番から22年、放送から９年を経た現在でも「完璧オフィシャル級」としか言いようのない映像美なのです。
何もかもが完璧なようですが、実は本作には唯一にして最大の欠点もある。それはフルショウではないこと。デジタル再放送は抜粋放送となっており、当日演奏された４曲「No Son Of Mine」「Turn It On Again」「Throwing It All Away」「I Can’t Dance」がカットされているのです。とは言え、それでも約２時間もウィルソン時代GENESISを楽しめることには違いない。良い機会でもありますので、ここでその中身も整理しておきましょう。

……と、このようになっています。当然の事ながら『CALLING ALL STATIONS』ナンバーはこのツアーでしか演奏されていないわけですし、クラシックスにしてもウィルソンによって染め変えられている。ポップなトリオ時代だけでなく、プログレ時代も幅広く、２時間でキャリアを俯瞰する名曲群の特異バージョンを楽しめるわけです。
劣化ゼロなデジタル再放送マスターによって実現した「世界でも最も美しいウィルソン時代GENESIS映像」です。もちろん、今の目にも違和感の拭えない時代ではありますが、間違いなく音楽も演奏も極めてレベルが高かった。だからこそ面白く、「オフィシャル代わり」のライヴ作品も欲しくなるのです。本作は、その乾きを癒して余りある１枚。異形なれど確かに存在したGENESISの１ページ、どうぞ史上最美麗な本作で存分にご堪能ください。
